About the Project

Juggling a part-time job, a fledgling business, and a serious miniature wargaming addiction is no joke. Thankfully, my generous boss, a fellow wargamer, recently dropped off some Space Dwarves and Werewolves from Wargame Atlantic, which came free with magazines. Now, I'm off to the workshop to craft a masterpiece from these forgotten figures and whatever else I can scavenge from the depths of my hobby hoard.

As I am building a diorama, I haven’t worried too much about the painting of the characters. However, I am wanting some colour. When you annoy a YouTube streamer (Yellow Belly Tabletop) with getting him to paint Santa. I choose those colours.

I started the painting of the werewolves. I am still unsure of the colour scheme for the dwarves. Who knows what colours I should use. Time for some serious thinking!

Well, I soon realized I would be unable to do this without spending any money, as I didn’t have any PVA glue to secure the foam to the wood, and my superglue was not recommended to be used with foam. I also spent some money on Plaster of Paris bandages, which I have used to cover the foam, and this should protect the surface long-term… I hope so at least.

Total spend for the project is £10!

Firstly, I glued the styrofoam to the wood with quick-setting PVA glue and left it overnight, which worked a treat and has firmly glued them together. I woke up in the morning, measured and cut the bandages before dipping them in cold water as per instructions. My wife was laughing at the mess I made in the kitchen. I would have to clean it up before she could make breakfast!

I have left it to dry in my home office and should be able to start painting it in a couple of hours, but the instructions say 24 hours is best for water-based paints. So I think I will leave it for the full time.

Painting has begun! I primed the miniatures with Colour Forge Matt Black.

The hardest part of the process is finding the colour scheme for the Space Dwarves.

I am thinking of painting the Werewolves grey and browns. Keeping them “normal” or “regular” but I feel the Space Dwarves should have a flair of colour, elements or flashes of bright yellows, oranges or reds. on an otherwise matt grey or metallic space suit.

While I don’t get paid overtime! I do get Time Off In Lieu. Also, I get the occasional gifts. My new boss has also given me some gifts for free. I want to provide some colour to the office, which isn’t flowers or a massive photo of an F35.

I first had to figure out what I wanted it to do. Not only that, but I found no inspiration in my hobby piles, the free miniatures would have to do…..

I have now built the miniatures. Four werewolves and three dwarves. I made some interesting choices, cutting guns and other weapons. I am building by feel and when the logic of “does it bring me joy”. Something I think is important. If you aren’t having fun doing something, you are doing it wrong.
