About the Project

I always wanted to see if I could try my hand at sculpting but doing complicated things like the human form seemed a bit out of my reach so I thought I'd play to my strengths and try sculpting historical and archaeological objects. So I'll try to see if I can free-hand sculpt prehistoric standing stones and other megalithic structures to start with and gradually move on to more complicated things like grave slabs, sarcophagi and high crosses though the Celtic knotwork may prove a tough nut to pull off. I'll try out a bunch of materials from plasticine to polymer clay to see what works best for me and then use either photogrammetry or a laser scanner to create a digital version which can be tidied up in Blender and then try and 3D print it. I'd love to try and create moulds from the sculpts but my flat's tiny and the landlord would be displeased with spilt two-part resin everywhere so I'm going high-tech.

Ok, for the first bit of sculpting, I used plasticine around a very basic wire armature (knocked together from big paper clips). I bought a cheap set of sculpting tools from Amazon but to be honest I got the most use out of a bit of dowling, a lolly stick and a coffee stirrer which I carved up a bit to make tools out of. I also used the obligatory scrunched-up tinfoil to create a bit of texture.

The first sculpt is just my freehand version of a generic Dolmen but I’ll put in a photo of a similar site at Paulnabrone, County Clare to give an example. The other sculpt is my version of one of the standing stones on Machrie Moor on the Isle of Arran.

I used a Revopoint scanner to record each sculpt and then did just a tiny bit of tidying up in Blender and then just printed them. I think they turned out OK for a first go. I’ll get them painted up soon and see how they look then.
