Spring cleaning like a hobby butterfly

About the Project
Hello gonna try and stick to one project. Last year some time or maybe longer I had an idea to paint my moonstone using only red, blue, yellow, black and white to mix my own paints. The fun bit is I struggle with greens browns and reds due to poor colour vision so lots of thi gs may end up various shades of brown. Starting with the friar I got as far as painting his skin before seeing something shiny and they have been sitting undercoated ever since. Hopefully I can use the time left in the challenge to get a colourful troupe on the table in time for the campaign that is starting at the local club.

First game with painted models.
Had a great game today, it was a three player game of sleepy heads. In this game you do not start with your force on the table you have a random amount of models turning up each turn.
The game lasts 4 turns and the player with the most moonstone wins.
I played as commonwealth humans against Gnomes and a Troup of dominion goblins.
These are some pictures from the game I wish I took more but was absorbed by the game and was desperately trying to remember the rules.
It started off well with three of my guys arriving first turn followed by three goblins and only two gnomes.
I was able to gab hold of three moonstone by turn two but it all went down hill from there.
Some lucky shots from a blunderbuss made a mess of sir hogwash and bit by bit my troup was taken out of the game, leaving the Gnomes and goblins to fight it out for the win.
The Gnomes put up a good fight but the evil grub caused havoc for the Gnomes taking two of them out of the game before picking up some moonstones and scuttling off.
I think in the end the goblins had six of the seven moonstones.
But I’m sure some new stones will appear tonight so it’s still all to play for.
Bam ? my first gobliney chap
This little chap is called Grub and is part goblin part bug, he has plenty of peepers for peeping.
I wanted his Beetle shell back to be deep oily colours but could not work out how to mix them so gave up and went with a stripy hazardous bug scheme instead.
The hat was supposed to be purple but turns out it may be red, whatever colour it is I think it looks pretty swish.
Bam ? back on track
Started this morning with the mission to paint Eric the squire and ended up painting baron von fancy hat and sir hogs wash as well.
It was quite a challenge to mix up the paints as there is a lot of metal parts to these models and only having 3 colours to play with (not including black and white)
I decided for the armour a blue grey highlighted to white would give the effect I was after.
I mixed 2 parts blue to one part white then half a part of black to make the grey then added more white to highlight up.
I also found that lahmian medium with a minute amount of black paint makes a wash that helps add some depth to the models, you have to be careful not to add too much paint or when it drys it just makes everything it touches grey so a lot of trial and error was needed.
All in all I’m very happy how they turned out.
Not again
whilst looking through some boxes looking for parts for another project, I came across an old project of 15mm battle front vietnam huey and a couple of rifle platoons.
So I ended up painting some helicopters rather than more moonstone….
Oops
Waaagh Guff Nuggitz lives
Kind of went off on a tangent, I had an old orc army in a box collecting dust and I got the itch that could only be scratched by rebasing the fungasy dudes ready to bash some noggins in games of the old world.
I guess this can be classed as a spring clean as some of the force has been nocking around for more years than I can remember.
Speed paints and washes definatly increase the speed a project can be painted ready for the table.
It’s cool to finally have this force game ready and finished….. although nothing us truly finished I coukd maybe add a rock lobba and maybe a couple of pump waggons, I’m sure I have another giant somewhere and stone trolls look cool or maybe a goblin bolt thrower…. the list goes on.
Now back to moonstone
Things to try on the next model
I kind of think I need to work out how to make a wash using the paint I have chosen.
It would be very useful to add some shading around all the small details on the models.
I tried watering down black which worked whilst wet but dried very matt and stained all the parts underneath not just the recesses.
I may try using lahmian medium rather than water next time to see if that works.
I also need to make sure I was the resin more thoroughly as some parts luckily in hard to see places still had a release agent on it so had a difficult time getting paint to take hold.
But lesson learned nothing a good scrub with some one else’s tooth brush and some washing up liquid won’t cure.
This dude is ready for a game
Turns out mixing colours is more complicated than it looks.
Saying that I’m pleased with how he turned out.
Forgot I was going to have to deal with metal parts so decided to go with a grey blue mix that is then dry brushed up to white. This looked OK until I gave the model a coat of matt varnish so went back in with satin varnish over the chain male and other metal parts.
Skin is also a lot harder to mix from primary colours than I thought, my first attempt the first time around was very very pink so I had to have some help from Rhi to get a more sensible flesh tone.
