About the Project
Rob talked me into doing this, what have I done!!!! Rob ‘suggested’ we go to a Mortem et Gloriam tournament, have the rules but haven’t had a go of it yet, thanks Covid!!! Have a 6 point Viking Saga (Gripping Beast plastic) force that I was in the process of updating with a force of Vikings from Victrix to re-do my Saga army. Cue the purchase of two more Victrix Viking sets, Dark Age archers (need archers) and Ancient Gallic Cavalry to convert to Vikings on horses. Hmmm what started off as a conversion project has really taken off. The force needed to attend is 8000 pts, which roughly equates to 8 Cavalry, 72 (now 64) Huscarls, 72 (now 80) Hird and 42 Archers give or take. Also needed to source sabots bases to base the forces, went back to the Legend John Banks on Facebook. John does amazing work with MDF and he sorted me out with bases, lots and lots of bases – 60mm x 6omm – mix of 4, 3 and 2 man bases. Mortem et Gloriam (MeG) uses bases (Unit groups – TUGS, UGs and SUGS (I think :/)) as the method of controlling the armies, the bases are set at specific sites and so you can uses models of any size. In this case the bases are set at 60mm x 60mm. So went with sabots. And then! Rob said we had to do a camp bases 3 times (frontage) the size of the Unit bases – 180mm x 120. So off to find some minis to build a mini diorama ?

Time for a wash/dip - Army Painter Soft Tone
Started Sunday, first batch
Using Army Painter Soft Tone, was going to dip but too many minis to be done and it's too messy (lack of confidence on my side as well) so painting it on
You need to do this is a ventilated space (which, the idiot that I am, did not - still fuzzy)
Batch 1 of 3
Batch 2 of 3 - All done, 12 Horse (riders still to be done), 42 Archers and 72 Hird (again I'm an idiot needed 80 but on have 72 so 8 Huscarls with be demoted to Hird)
Batch 3 of 3 - Still to be done, 72 Huscarls, 8 Riders, Camp and Warlord. Then all need to be flocked. This all needs to be done by Thursday afternoon fly out to Luton for Roll Call on Saturday and Sunday

All the Hird (72) are done, Cavalry (8) - done, Archers (24) - done. Still to be based Huscarls (72) and Skirmish archers (24) all need to be done today, then done!
All Done, well calling it done for the Tournament, will have to clean some stuff at a later date - Spring Clean 2025!! lol

The Tournament has come and gone
Excellent tournament, 5 games and 4 losses as it was my first time playing Mortem et Gloriam the other players are all true gentlemen and very accommodating, it was a great experience and the game system is great fun to play and sucks you right in. The quote from the rule book “No one gets out unscathed” is very accurate. It’s pure carnage and amazing fun.
Thanks to Rob (@commodorerob) – Early Scots 1054 CE, Nik – Imperial Romans 286 CE, Simon – Indo Scythian 10CE, Richard – later French Ordonnance (who won overall) and Gareth – Burgundian Ordonnance for helping me in the baptism of fire and Simon Hall for creating a truly wonderful and thematic gaming system that is great fun to get into.
The only downside was I didn’t come last and get the wooden spoon. My last game of the weekend I almost won and did quite well on points and was a complete blast and that pushed my stats up slightly. Thanks Nik. Simon Stokes came last and kindly gave me his prize, Victrix Macedonian Greek Successor Heavy Cavalry as he didn’t need it, true gentleman and his are was brutal, the quality of the forces on display was spectacular some beautiful/deadly armies.
Addendum
Ryanair didn’t lose or destroy my army on the flight out or back. But me being a clumsy git, I did break four spears (now fixed) and popped off two shields (also fixed) so counts that as a win 🙂
