About the Project

Set against a backdrop of a Civil War that lasted for two years, 1215-17, as a result of the issuing of Magna Carta. A civil war was the perfect opportunity for the leading nobles of the time to grab land and power while settling some old scores along the way. This vying for land and power hadn't stopped since the invasion of 1066 with only the strongest of kings being able to keep their nobles in check. Our narrative focuses on small groups of warriors brought together under a lord or baron to raid and steal or defend land and property. With the strong, wise, cunning and lucky aiming to rise out of this civil strife in a better position than when it started. The Barons' War skirmish game has been written to enable players to fight out tabletop battles against the backdrop of the First Barons’ War between rival Barons or rival factions who find themselves on either side of the conflict. The game is historically themed, the gameplay is fast-paced and tactical with plenty of narrative and where force building presents you with lots of options enabling two players to muster very different retinues. However, as intended, this is an alpha set of rules which does not include rules for siege warfare, although rules for fighting in buildings are included. Campaign rules are something that will be addressed at a later date and released online. Having grown out of the Barons’ War Kickstarter project, the intention is for this ruleset to develop into a system that could be used throughout the Medieval period. Starting with England from when the Western Roman Empire withdrew around 410 AD to 1485 AD when Richard III died at the Battle of Bosworth Field. This presents us with a huge span of history for gaming which can be broadly divided into Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon and Viking, Anglo-Norman, Angevin and Plantagenet. And that’s just when looking at it from Great Britain. With warriors of this period being pretty similar, it would be easy to use the profiles in this rulebook to play out tabletop battles in any setting. Over time we see these rules evolving with additional warriors, characters, abilities and scenarios being added starting with the Dark Ages, the Anarchy and the Crusades and shared to www.warhost.online, which has been set up to be the community website for the game.

Welsh Foot Knights and Poor WarriorsWelsh Foot Knights and Poor Warriors

I have finished all of my Welsh foot for my Barons’ War: Game these being Foot Knights and Poor Warriors and both packs are by Footsore. With them is Maredudd ab Owain, a 10th-century king in Wales, which is a lovely figure, I am using him as a old chieftain.

A 10th-century king in Wales of the High Middle Ages and a member of the House of Dinefwr, his birthright was the kingdom of Deheubarth comprising the southern realms of Dyfed, Ceredigion, and Brycheiniog. Upon his father’s death, King Owain, around AD 988, also inherited the kingdoms of Gwynedd and Powys, which he had conquered for his father. He was counted among the Kings of the Britons by the Chronicle of the Princes and died c. 999.

I love these Matthew Bickley sculpts as they are so full of character and beautiful posing. I will over the weekend get a photo of the whole painted Welsh force sorted.

My next unit for my Welsh javelinmen for my Barons’ War Game are completed. Not only that I have also completed a hermit for the Welsh too. I am chuffed with the look of these, with the mix of the old celtic style and the new medieval where I think I got the balance right.

I love these Matthew Bickley sculpts as they are so full of character and look amazing.

I really cannot wait to these boyos into the battle field.

The Welsh SpearsThe Welsh Spears

I have finished my Welsh Spearmen for my Barons’ War Game and I am really please them. I am loving the way they look and feel different to the English and though there is painfully little in the way of information I have aimed to have a Welsh look to them. To me the one thing I have loved the most is the painting of the “celtic” style Welsh designs on some of the shields.

I have finished my Welsh Knights, with the axes and slingers for my Barons’ War game and I think I am close to 500 points of painted figures now. These are lovely Matthew Bickley sculpts, full of character and lovely poses. I have kept with the a similar them and colours as the Nobles and Bowmen to gave a uniformed feel to the force.

The Welsh look like a very interesting army for The Barons’ War and I am looking to playing them.

How I paint my Armour, Oh no I am giving away a secret, lol

After being asked how I paint my armour on the UHH by Squirrel Lord and @Sundancer, I thought I would do a quick guide. I have to saying I finding painting armour really interesting because of the reflexes, the different finishes, even the different metals as they all give different affects. But I don’t usually worry about all that but instead aim for something that I am happy with and best brings out the details of the sculpt. A good figure with lovely sculpted details, like Paul Hick’s or Matt Bickley’s are the ones I love the best for the level of detail, nicely between too much and not enough.

So I have do this simple step by step guide to how I paint armour, particular Early Medieval (Dark Age) and Medieval armour.

There is no magic, elves painting them for me, I so there was, it is a straight forward, simple formula that works for me.

All the paints I use for Vallejo Model Colour range, but you can use any paints.

I use the following VMC paints

Black, Gunmetal Blue, Natural Steel and Silver

The Paints I use from Vallejo Model Colour range, Black, Gunmetal Blue, Natural Steel and SilverThe Paints I use from Vallejo Model Colour range, Black, Gunmetal Blue, Natural Steel and Silver

I then do a very light drybrush, that kisses the surface of the model, using VMC Silver, to ring out the highlight details. You are looking the edges, raise areas and tops of the helmets, to give that polished, worn look. Trick is to just do the lightest of touches with the drybrushing. In fact you can leave it at this stage if you like but I apply a couple of extra things.I then do a very light drybrush, that kisses the surface of the model, using VMC Silver, to ring out the highlight details. The next stage I wash a mix of VMC Black with the VMC Gunmetal Blue, I use 2 parts Gunmetal Blue to 1 part Black to about 7 parts water. You want this to be very watery so it washes into the recesses and bland all the colours together but not so it hides all your previous work. The good thing is you can play around with the Gunmetal Blue to Black ratio, more blue the bluer it is, more black the dark it will be. Also if you are going after the browny weather protection that was favoured in the ECW and 30YW add 1 part Flat Brown to the mix too. This is the last stage I do and it is simply a very light drybrush with VMC Silver again to just bring the details out and on the weapons edges I paint a very light edge highlight to them and hard edges on the armour. This is now all done and you see is it rather simple to do :DThis is the last stage I do and it is simply a very light drybrush with VMC Silver again to just bring the details out and on the weapons edges I paint a very light edge highlight to them and hard edges on the armour. I have finished my Welsh bowmen for my Barons’ War Game and I am very pleased with the results. These are beautiful sculpts from Matt Bickley and represent the famous Welsh Longbows.

There is painfully little information on what they worn and I am gone with natural colours and added a bit of colour by painting the sash in bright colours to represent Celtic plaids and stripes.

Gwyrdd Llachar ap Sion Command and his Welsh NoblesGwyrdd Llachar ap Sion Command and his Welsh Nobles

I have finished the fir4st unit for my Welsh and it seems fitting that I start with the commander, Gwyrdd Llachar ap Sion, and his Noble bodyguard. There is painful little information of the medieval Welsh and gone with what information I can find and site like this, Regia Anglorum. I wanted to go for a mix of Celtic and medieval and I unified the unit by the use of Reds, Welsh were known for their red shirts and red cloaks, and green. I have also gone for a dragon motif too for their shields.
