About the Project

Set against a backdrop of a Civil War that lasted for two years, 1215-17, as a result of the issuing of Magna Carta. A civil war was the perfect opportunity for the leading nobles of the time to grab land and power while settling some old scores along the way. This vying for land and power hadn't stopped since the invasion of 1066 with only the strongest of kings being able to keep their nobles in check. Our narrative focuses on small groups of warriors brought together under a lord or baron to raid and steal or defend land and property. With the strong, wise, cunning and lucky aiming to rise out of this civil strife in a better position than when it started. The Barons' War skirmish game has been written to enable players to fight out tabletop battles against the backdrop of the First Barons’ War between rival Barons or rival factions who find themselves on either side of the conflict. The game is historically themed, the gameplay is fast-paced and tactical with plenty of narrative and where force building presents you with lots of options enabling two players to muster very different retinues. However, as intended, this is an alpha set of rules which does not include rules for siege warfare, although rules for fighting in buildings are included. Campaign rules are something that will be addressed at a later date and released online. Having grown out of the Barons’ War Kickstarter project, the intention is for this ruleset to develop into a system that could be used throughout the Medieval period. Starting with England from when the Western Roman Empire withdrew around 410 AD to 1485 AD when Richard III died at the Battle of Bosworth Field. This presents us with a huge span of history for gaming which can be broadly divided into Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon and Viking, Anglo-Norman, Angevin and Plantagenet. And that’s just when looking at it from Great Britain. With warriors of this period being pretty similar, it would be easy to use the profiles in this rulebook to play out tabletop battles in any setting. Over time we see these rules evolving with additional warriors, characters, abilities and scenarios being added starting with the Dark Ages, the Anarchy and the Crusades and shared to www.warhost.online, which has been set up to be the community website for the game.

Kingdom of Jerusalem SpearmenKingdom of Jerusalem Spearmen

I have finished my second unit for my Kingdom of Jerusalem force and these are spearmen. I have got with shields for these guys as they look nice with them and also in the Baron’s War game these are functional and act as a saving throw, admittedly a slim chance but a chance none the less.

I have got for a paler blue on these guys but have kept them in the same colour range of the nobles. Hopefully this will provide a nice cohesive look to the whole force, the baby blues, lol.

I have made a start on my next faction but this time it is for Baron’s War: Outremer. I am basing these guys on one of my favourite films Kingdom of Heaven, the Director’s Cut, and on the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

I have gone for a sky blue colour as the main colour as I think it make them stand out for the crowd, bet now we will see a ton of them now, lol. Added to this is a pale yellow colour to add some contrast.

I am building a small 700 point force for a tournament in Rotherham on 25th March and this is the start of it, my commanded section and commander.

The Kingdom of Jerusalem, officially known as the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, also known as the Frankish Kingdom of Jerusalem, was a Crusader state that was established in the Levant immediately after the First Crusade. It lasted for almost two hundred years, from the accession of Godfrey of Bouillon in 1099 until the siege of Acre in 1291. Its history is divided into two periods with a brief interruption in its existence, beginning with its collapse after the siege of Jerusalem in 1187 and its restoration after the Third Crusade in 1192.

The original Kingdom of Jerusalem lasted from 1099 to 1187 before being almost entirely overrun by the Ayyubid Sultanate under Saladin. Following the Third Crusade, it was re-established in Acre in 1192. The re-established state is commonly known as the “Second Kingdom of Jerusalem” or alternatively as the “Kingdom of Acre” after its new capital city. Acre remained the capital for the rest of its existence excluding the two decades that followed the Crusaders’ establishment of partial control over Jerusalem during the Sixth Crusade, through the diplomacy of Frederick II of Hohenstaufen vis-à-vis the Ayyubids.

The vast majority of the Crusaders who established and settled the Kingdom of Jerusalem were from the Kingdom of France, as were the knights and soldiers who made up the bulk of the steady flow of reinforcements throughout the two-hundred-year span of its existence; its rulers and elite were therefore predominantly French. French Crusaders also brought their language to the Levant, thus establishing Old French as the lingua franca of the Crusader states, in which Latin served as the official language. While the majority of the population in the countryside comprised Christians and Muslims from local Levantine ethnicities, many Europeans (primarily French and Italian) also arrived to settle in villages across the region.

Early Medieval Irish CavalryEarly Medieval Irish Cavalry

I have finished my Early Medieval Irish cavalry from Footsore Miniatures and I am chuffed with the way they have turned out. I’m planning on using these with my Irish army but also for my Welsh in my Barons’ War Game.

Well until the Irish list turn up for Barons’ War and then they will be used of Irish and not Welsh.

I planning on adding more to my Irish and painting some more of them.
