My British Starter Force Build

My intention for the British Starter Force was to build the variations of each model and I was pleased with the results so far. So my list of content  is thus:

AVRE, Churchill, Crocodile, Centaur 95mm, Cromwell 95mm, Cromwell, Firefly, M10, Stuart, Universal Carrier WASP, Universal Carrier OP, Universal Carrier  MG and 25 pdr.

I had already bought some additional models to  start creating my British Army. Again, a week later after finishing the box contents bar the figures (still haven’t decided yet what I’m doing) I made up some more models.

I liked the idea of having a AVRE support unit (thanks Oriskany), so I made another AVRE with my Churchill Armoured Troup box. I then decided to go through my unit cards and chose to make a Churchill Armoured Squadron HQ, because I had already made the 75mm Churchill I decided to have the other two Churchills as 95mm giving me the options  for 18, 12 and 6 points HQs.

My next box was the Universal Carrier Patrol. So I had already made a WASP, an OP and a MG Universal Carrier, so my obvious choice was to  make all varieties of Universal Carriers. I have units of WASP,  MGs, MMGs and a single PIAT Universal Carrier.

I’ll definitely be buying another box of Churchills maybe two to finish off my Crocodile Flame Platoon and have a Churchill Armoured Troup, now I’m not sure if I should buy another Universal Carrier Patrol box to have a PIAT Patrol or just leave it as a single PIAT Universal Carrier (hmmm, choices, choices).

A  week later I finished making the models, I have four Stuartss, two M10 and four 25 pdrs. I didn’t realise how delicate the tow bars are for the ammo carriages – I broke one in half with the part flying  through the air to somewhere, so one has a shortened tow bar.

Now I’m just left with the figures, I’m not sure whether to paint them first before mounting or mount them on the bases and then paint.

After watching the Flames of War bootcamp I was inspired to give 15mm wargaming a go, I was also inspired by the scenery that was made and the folks having a good time. It’s taken me a little while to start the project – I had wanted to participate in  the slow grow league and the global campaign but, things in life took precedence.

I have always had the liking for the “Desert Rats” and in my younger days played with desert toys where they were available. I believe an uncle of  mine (adopted uncle) was in the second world  war and stationed somewhere  in Africa, never heard any tales but watched the old movies featuring “the Desert Rats” and other war movies from that time.

I’m probably heading for my army to be Desert Rats, so I’ll have other research to do so that I am more knowledgeable than I am now. I decided to buy Battlefront’s D-Day British Forces in Normandy, 1944. I also got hold of the British Unit cards, British Command cards and the British Starter Force – Desert Rat Squadron. Now to build the models and here’s what I’ve got now.
