A SAGA to surpass Metal Gear

About the Project
Burrows and Badgers is completely to blame for me learning a lot about the dark age Kingdom of Northumbria. Gripping beast having an affordable starter set for Anglo-Saxons/Anglo-Danes meant that on an impulse I now have a small set of men descended from the early Danish settlers in the north of England. I ran out of enthusiasm for breaking tiny spears and making a meal of asssembling them but I've gotten over that and powered through the lot ready for painting!

Something a little different
I’ve gone for a different technique than I usually used.
With these I’ve primed them in white then given them a wash to bring out the details (so I can see them!)
I’m not sure I’ve made the right choice here though as missing anything on a white based mini stands out like a sore thumb.
At least it’s shown me all of the mold lines I missed (absolutely loads everywhere) ?
First hearthguard
First mini painted for my saga danes. I’m trying to go for natural greys and tans for the clothing, these guys are meant to be wealthy land owners in my kingdom (what’s the word? not a kingdom!) and those who would sit at the top table in my halls so they can be adorned with some more exotic colours such as purples and nice reds, but I was a bit timid.
Being the more realistically-proportioned scale makes them quite fiddly to paint and the use of a light basecoat means I can’t get away with just missing bits which is annoying.
I’ve left his shield white, after much deliberation I’m going to get some shield transfers instead of torturing myself trying to think up and paint cool patterns.
Assembly complete!
I’ve assembled my Gripping Beast 4-point starter warband as the following:
- Warlord x1
- Hearthguard x4
- Hearthguard x4
- Warriors x8
- Levy slings x12
On the shopping list is another unit of warriors and some dane axe hearthguard.
As pointed out to me by somebody, when I move on to collect another force I’ll end up with more warriors and levy than I know what to do with but I won’t end up with extra hearthguard so that seems the smart move.
