Hail to the Men of Bronze

About the Project
Men of Bronze is going to be a new game about Hopilite Warfare around the 5th century BC that will be published by Osprey in April 2019. From reading about it it feels it will give similar sized games as Dux Bellorum,DBA or Basic Impetus and is listed as being agnostic when it comes to base size and scale So after a bit of discussion with some like minded individuals we have (at the moment) decided on 10mm though this subject to change. Awaiting first samples from Newline Designs before fully making a decision.

This Project is Active
We haven't gone away you know!
So it’s been a few months and after a few distractions I finally got them based. Originally I was going to base them on 60×40 but have decided to base them on the now infamous 2ps as I quite fancy the look of Clash of Spears
Still have to add decals but happy enough with them
A little more progress
So this as been quite quiet for a while as other projects got in the way
But due to a friend giving me some excess skirmishers from Magister Militum the project has slowly begun to awaken again
As per usual there just block painted and washed but they serve the purpose
On the back of painting these I’m going to use Magister Militum (unless Pendraken release their new Ancient Greek range in the next couple of months) for the rest of the Hopilites as they don’t have the huge amounts of fine detail the Newline ones do
So without further ado
A bit more done
So this is the last of the first pack I bought. This is the last of these for a while as I wait for some cataphract camels in 6mm from Baccus to arrive to complete my Parthian army
There might be some more Egyptians in the near future as well but not quite sure yet
We haven't gone away you know
Still slowly painting although I did get distracted by a 28mm Space Marine (Not sure what happened. Must be the drugs. I’m sure the feeling will pass) so after a little delay I decided to see what they look like on a mocked up base. Still need to add some shield transfers and still not sure if I want this many figures as I need to add some command figures as well. Anyway this is them
Having a think
After much mulling I have decided that I don’t like the paint job on the figures in the previous entry
To explain further I don’t think they have enough contrast which I think you need with 6 and 10mm to make them stand out on the tabletop
I will leave these figures as are and try something darker on the next batch and maybe using Nuln oil or a black future wash
David Imrie of Saxon Dog fame uses a mixture of Nuln oil and Earthshade so I might try that
In the meantime I’m going to see what ideas I can steal off the web
Till next time…
Recovering from the lurgey
So having been down with the dreaded lurgey over the weekend I had to pull out of a game of Dux Bellorum on Friday night but did manage somehow to get a bit of painting done over the rest of the weekend
Didn’t get too much done but at least it’s a stuttering start
Time to disappear
So I’m happy enough with the way the sample figures turned out and more than satisfied with the earthshade wash so its time to disappear over the next few days and get some painting done.
If all goes to plan I should have the majority of the pack painted and if were really lucky have them on some tests bases as well
Still haven’t decided on shield transfers but we will ponder as we paint
See you on the other side
Let the fun begin
Just a quick update as I start painting the first figures. This bit takes me a while as I figure out which bits I really have to paint and where a few shortcuts can be taken. I painted them all the same and gave one of them an Earthshade wash and the other two and W&N nut brown wash. Will let them dry properly and varnish them before making a decision
The picture again is a but shaky crap but hopefully gives you an idea
Quick afterthought. Going to leave the shields pure white at the moment while I think about shield transfers
Till next time
Priming and washing
Ok. So this is the third entry and to be honest I’ve surprised myself for getting this far.
Anyway I finally went out to get some primer today. I always go to Halfords as it’s 2 minutes down the road and although it’s quite expensive @£6.99 not having to drag into town is worth the extra cost.
Quick interlude about primers. All primers are the same whether you spend £1 or £20 on them. The only difference is the amount of propellant in them. End of educational message
So what is described below is the same method I use for painting all 6 and 10mm figures.
It was a bit cold tonight so I put the aerosol in some warm water from the tap for a few minutes to help loosen the paint and then gave it a good shake to mix the paint
After that I give them a quick wash with watered down Vallejo Black Shade to bring out the detail and make it easier to paint. Hopefully you can see that in the photo below
Next I will put down some base colours
A bit of a late edit but the above shaky close up might give a better view of the wash
The figures arrive
So the sample pack arrived today from Newline Designs.
Pack was £4.75 for 30 figures which is around the same price for all the historical 10mm manufacturers. With postage the total cost was £5.95
All the figures are one piece castings and all the figures are identical apart from the 3 command figures included.
Couple of pictures of the figures
Next task is to clean them up and get a primer on them and a wash then will take some more photos so you can get a better idea of how they look
