About the Project
Well folks, it has finally happened. It took all of your combined community might and four years ... it took less time than that to get Warren into historical wargaming ... but now you've accomplished an even more Herculean feat ... Oriskany has started 28mm hobby. :)
My first try at 28mm scale, building a small Long Range Desert Group / SAS force or New Zealanders, Rhodesians, and British for the upcoming Desert War Bolt Action boot camp.

All set to ship out to Coleraine!
Okay, I think these are all set for now. Added some additional elements to the bases, rimmed the bases again in brown, added a little more wash and dry brushing, added insignia, wristwatches, and a few other small details, also experimented with small accents of sand on the LRDG vehicles.
A-a-a-almost Done. :D
Hopefully salvaged these 28mm Chevrolet 30cwt trucks for the LRDG. There are still a few rough patches here and there, I’m thinking of putting in some small patches of “drift” sand to cover the most egregious spots.
A-a-a-almost Done. :D
Good afternoon, everyone.
Okay, we are a-a-a-almost done with this LRDG/early SAS force for the 28mm Bolt Action Boot Camp. A little dry brushing, some last-round details (insignia, wristwatch bands, etc.) are just about all that’s left. A little foliage and desert scrub on the bases, as well.
Many thanks to everyone for the support on this one, and the helpful hints from some of the “28mm veteran” community members! 😀
Additional Progress - Vehicles just about done
Getting closer. The vehicles are just about done. Drybrushing, markings, and details now applied. Big thanks to Justin, Damon, and Steve for advise re: dark brown wash, and Andy for light grey Vallejo wash.
Switching primary focus now to the 16 infantry.
A little more progress ...
Little more progress on the LRDG. Now with 16 men instead of 8, plus 6 crew in the two vehicles. Far, far happier with how the men are turning out so far rather than the vehicles, I seem to have a lot more work ahead of me on them.
A ray of hope ...
Okay, I think this is slowly inching back from the abyss …
Some salvage work done to smooth out the worst of the block coloring.
And wow! Huge thanks to everyone for all the supportive and encouraging comments!
Also, as fate would have it, my second batch of eight SAS / LRDG troops arrived in the post, started on them, different primer (lighter color in front) went down much better.
Actually none of the troops are that bad, at least not for the stage they’re at now – but the vehicles were less than pristine with the primer. The block colors are mostly down (yes, that borderline pink is intentional – that’s not the issue) – it just didn’t go down very smoothly over the “grainy” primer ever after I sanded and smoothed out and re-painted as best I could.
I suppose I can cover it with desert sand, dust, and grime, or as a last resort, battle damage.
Also, photographing in better light seems to have helped!
In all, this is just one of those things I really wanted to do. Admittedly, it’s not strictly necessary for the Boot Camp, but when your prospects for its accomplishment come under threat because of a cheap can of primer, then you go to fix it with your air brush only to find that the hose somehow got uprooted and torn right out the compressor somehow, then the camera screws up, then the manual painting doesn’t go terribly well, then then then then then …
It was just a day of “rolling all 1s” is all. 🙁
But, like I said, things seem to be going a little better today.
Not going very well ...
Seriously considering dumping this project. $130.00 in miniatures and priority overseas shipping to be all but ruined the first day I actually try to get started.
The primer coat went on like absolute pigs asshole.
Went to salvage it with an airbrush cover only to find the hose had been completely UPROOTED out of my air compressor, I had no idea when that happened.
Went to sand down the shit primer and try to salvage with hand painting, which didn’t really work.
All to make a boot camp date I don’t even know why I’m trying to meet. I won’t be able to use these LRDG minis at the boot camp, and others are bringing LRDG minis anyway. So what’s the point anymore?
Meanwhile I’ve lost a complete day of boot camp prep.
Now my camera is acting up with these shit photos. In actuality the miniatures so far do look a LITTLE better than this, but not much.
I dunno. I haven’t painted a miniature in about 9 months, I’m very quickly remembering why.
