Blogging At This Event:
And so it begins .....
Hey Folks, Mel here with the start of an epic feature project to build The Fabled Realms campaign map. In this episode, I introduce what is a dream project for me and take you through how I plan to take you along for the ride here on Beasts of War.
And that little bit goes there ...
In this episode, we tackle taking the landmasses from the Fabled Realms map and onto the board. We cover the techniques and materials used to get these crucial foundations right and discuss future challenges such as creating the mountains, the cities and what we're going to do next to the board.
Lay Of The Land
After fixing the land masses down, it was time to tackle cutting out the rivers, sanding out the river valleys and smoothing out the coastline.
It's starting to really take shape now but the next stage raising the mountains will really bring it to life but you'll have to wait until Thursdays update to see how I tackle those!
From Valley To Peak...
In this episode, we tackle shaping the landmasses, their coastlines, the river valleys and we come up with a way to create the miniature mountain ranges.
Framing it up
I've reached the point where I had to frame the map up before I could proceed any further. A quick trip to the local timber merchant and a good chat with an old timer got me 2 8ft inch by inch batons of white maple for the frame, so that's my warping issues solved! Next stage is to tackle raising the mountains, shaping the countries, placing the locations and getting it to the undercoating stage. This part is the real creative challenge, so wish me luck folks!
The moments you realise the job got longer
Work continues on the map, slightly behind schedule but nothing a couple of good sessions in the studio can't fix. One of the reasons is that I realised that I didn't like the height of the coastline. So I decided to remodel them as I was shaping the landscapes, adding locations and putting in the foundations of the smaller mountain ranges.
I've also realised just as I was typing this post up that I don't like the look of the location markers, so I'll be ripping those up and embedding them into the foam tomorrow. It's a bit more work but I think the results will be worth it.
This weeks update vid will be out on Saturday, fingers crossed it'll be built and ready for painting by then.
Final Detailing...
Battling heatwaves, powercuts and minor family emergencies, the board gets built ready for painting. Next job will be to bring it to life with a bit of colour!
It was all going so well ....
In this latest episode, we start to get the colour on the board. Watch as everything perfectly until the end where it goes terribly wrong, leaving me with one week to get it fix, finished and sealed!
Detailing It Up!
In this episode, we start to add all the details to the map, bringing the lands of the fabled realms alive. Who would of thought so much little stuff could take so long, but then we added the forests, roads, rivers, sea and laser cut bits all ready to add our ocean in the final episode coming out later this week.
Finished...
And so she is complete, now to deliver it to 4Ground and combine it with a trip to Bovington. Keep you eyes out for the final vlog at the end of the week to find out how I did the ocean, see 4Grounds reaction and the final project wrap up.
The final vlog!
In this final update, we add the resin oceans and get it down to the guys at 4Ground just in time to make it to GenCon!
I will be fallowing this with interest. When does it start?
Next week bud but how did you find this page?
He must be a witch! 😉
Burn him!!!! Lol
Or a spy!
Shoot him!!!! lol
I think he is innocent and we should let him go!
Very simple actually, just used the handy search option at the top page and just clicked random links. One lead hear.
@warzan well thats a fun bug to find 😉
fallowing eh? as in ploughing? 🙂 🙂 🙂
The fields are not going to plough themselves so…
awesome stuff cant wait to see more @theterraintutor still need to see if inkjet transfer will work, if it does expect some “danger terrain tutor” signage… 😉
Oh god! lol
I’ve been playing with some inkjet transfers over the past couple of days, pain in the backside to cut out small fiddly ones, apart from that they’re spot on
@avernos different idea, effectively i literally mean transfering the ink from the paper to a surface, so print rub done in theory, just need to find the right sort of paper for the ink not to stick to it when i print
I can’t imagine how that will work without smudging, so good luck with that I shall await your report with great interest
Looking forward to this Mel!
Hope you enjoy it bud
TT… i love your little videos and the Sunday chat thing is so chilled, its lovely that you take time out to drink tea and chill with your worldwide followers…..
It’s how we roll bud! 😉
looking forward to seeing how this turns out
Very cool seeing this.
Really looking forward to this Mel.
Thia is gonna be so great!
I’m sure some of these techniques will be applicable to one of my other projects currently gathering dust on a shelf (making a campaign map using hex bases, Mighty Empires style!) so I am keen to follow along with this!
I frigging love mighty empires!
Of course I will be following along. The highlight of my week is spending a couple of hours with Mel and the crew on the TTT Sunday Nighter. Been looking forward to this build.
BTW @theterraintutor Will there be Palm Trees, Mel?
Yes but they’re going to be too small to see mate
Hey I’m looking forward to watching this develop! Well done Mel, sounds like your dream project.
Is there a way of receiving notifications when something new relating to this is posted? Incase you can’t tell, I’m new here.
Not sure but the vid updates will go out every thursday mate
I would even know where to start with a project like this. going to be interesting to follow along
Funny enough, neither do I lol
Awesome stuff Mel. Im really excited to see the end result and pick up a few tips on the way.
Hey Mel it’s Gaz Brierley, looking forward to this one and will be very interested to see how the project unfolds.
The first thing I am wondering is are you going to frame it.
Yes it’s being framed but that’s been done by 4ground as I didn’t want to act as middle man between the framers and 4G as it just complicated the build.
Oh God Mel – teaming up with Warren and the lads?! Thats your reputation ruined for life :p
I had a reputation????? 😀
Bose! Looks like lots more vids coming down the road. We’re in for the long haul.
Aren’t we always bud 😉
this is a project that a wont miss…
Following with interest – I have a map of Ankh Morpork on my wall itching to be built 🙂
oh that looks like a nice build bud
For those who have not joined in the fun and mayhem of a live show, join Mel and the crew tonight, 7pm UK time. (Westside is a treat…)
Watching this one carefully would love to create my own 3d map for something I’d worked on for a while.
This channel does not disappoint, thank you! (subbed)
So if the map does not get you, the heat will. 😉
it almost did!
Agreed, this thread is an inspiration. I’m even contemplating a similar small scale attempt at a 3d map myself. All I need is time, talent and space
I can’t wait to see more of this, it’s like the new yankee workshop except instead of a wardrobe being made it’s a fantasy 3D map; so doubly interesting for me!
