P-VLOG: D&D Dracolich – From Parts To Painted
Welcome to another Parts To Painted series, this time John is jumping off the deep end and taking up the challenge to build, paint and base the D&D Dracolich from the Gale Force 9 collectors series of miniatures.
Stay tuned as this monster project gets under way, and feel free to pop in come comments on what you think of this beast and your thought on the techniques that John has been using.
Blogging At This Event:
Building The D&D Dracolich
Join John as he gets started on building the Dungeons & Dragons Dracolich from Gale Force Nine. This is a great kit but make sure to follow along with our guide to get it all fitting together nicely...
Plans for Painting & A Little Bit Of Lore
John is now putting together his plans for how to paint this wonderful model. He also takes some time to give us a bit of lore on just what a Dracolich is...
Adding Green Stuff To Gaps & Imperfections
With big models like this you'll need to break out the green stuff in order to sort out some of the imperfections. See what John does to solve this problem showing off how to use green stuff...
Primed & Ready For The First Shading
Now - how do we begin priming this massive model? Well, John shows you how and also gets stuck into shading...
Shading Done, Mid-Tone Shades & Gloss Varnish
Now we get into the nitty gritty of things and begin to work on some more shading, working with the mid-tones and then applying a bit of gloss varnish to make certain areas pop.
Wash Done & Painting Old Weathered Bone Plans
This long dead Dracolich now needs to get a little dirty and we have to age it with some weathered bone...
Mini-Tutorial - Old Gore
Get stuck into some sticky blood with this old gore tutorial. It's always fun learning how to paint blood and old gore is certainly a step above that in complexity...
Bone Results, Blending & Blood Effect Ideas
We take a look at how the bone has turned out and get started on thinking about more blending and the way in which to apply blood!
Picking Out Details On The Tower
It's time to get stuck into the details on the impressive tower which also comes as part of the model and forms the scenic base for the Dracolich.
Blending The Rubble & Dirt
Now it's time to get down and dirty with the rubble and dirt that has built up around the base of this ruined tower. See how we go about giving it a natural look...
Adding An Evil Eye
It's time to add an incredibly evil eye to this Dracolich. We think this looks quite awesome but let us know what you would do if you had to add a gleaming terrifying eye!
Mini-Tutorial - Bringing Out The Higher Details
It's time to get stuck into the finer details of this Dracolich and see what we can pick out from across the whole model to give it that extra edge.
Showing Off The Results Of Drybrushing
Drybrushing might seem like a rather slapdash technique but when used right it can add a lot of easy highlighting to a model and provide you with an easy way to give a model extra depth. See how our efforts turned out on the Dracolich.
Mini-Tutorial - Adding Flowers & Grass Tufts
The base will often times add something extra to a model and we certainly believe so in this case. We think the flowers and grass tufts we've worked on here really add some contrast to the dark and destructive power of the Dracolich...
Adding Static Grass To The Base
One of the final steps is making sure to add grass to the base to tie it all together. See how we did so in this video below...
The Dracolich Is Finished!
With all of those steps now followed we think we're finished with the Dracolich! What do you think of the results we've managed to get from our various techniques?
Finished Miniature 360° Video
...and here we have it in glorious 360 degree vision. Don't forget to comment throughout the PLOG with your thoughts on our processes and how you painted your own Dracolich...
This looks a lot better than the one shown by Galeforce 9 themselves.
The combination of the dark creature and the ‘happy’ tower is what really sells how evil this thing is.

Lean back and listen to @johnlyons
Just finished going through all the posts. Excellent and I enjoyed them all. I don’t want to complain but … if you are going to post all the p-log posts at the same time why not also include a merged video. (It is a little annoying that clicking on a video in the p-log takes you to another page which you then watch the video. It would be better to have the video play in the p-log itself.) I think having the individual posts is great but it would have been even better if they were posted when they were… Read more »
People complained when it was posted as the project was happening (as there may be a couple of weeks gap between some steps)
Honestly this is probably the best balance 🙂
Hmm, I don’t understand the complaint about it being posted as it happens. It’s just weird to ask for comments and suggestions if you are not going to be posting it as it happens. In the end it doesn’t matter as I enjoyed it and John did a great job. I have the model and I’m going to try and do something along the lines of what John did (really good stuff).
Ohh and playing the videos on the main page was changed as it was crashing mobile devices 🙂
Dude, awesome, wish I had half the talent to take something like that on!
Great job @johnlyons This guy is scary!
@johnloyns you should branch out from tanks more often, I really enjoyed it – not that I don’t enjoy the tanks
Very nice job. I am enjoying this style of report. It is nice to see something from start to finish as most of my stuff never gets finished.
Great job John. I remember when I used to watch you assemble GW kits on youtube. After tackling this dragon are you ready for another Stompa?
NOPE! 🙂
Good job.
a nice job their john.
Terrific work John! I hate to ask this question but looking back at how you approached this project is there anything you’d change in your approach if you did it again?
I really enjoyed the videos, thanks for posting them.
I would certainly use brighter colours. Pay more attention to the bone, claws and teeth.
