About the Project
Short story- I backed a 3d file kickstarter that gave me Roman's, celts, germans and carthaginians and wanted to do a 15mm celtic army for infamy. Starting to really love 15mm, dammit Warzan you were right!

First battle out of lockdown (AAR) - (Text to be added)
So we finally managed to organise a games day and getting my gauls onto the field against the Roman invaders.
We rolled up the scenario and location and got scenarios 5 – Ubique and it would be played out in Gaul, which helped me immensely as it meant i had more places to ambush from.
My opponent set up his roman engineers in the centre surrounded by his infantry. There were four groups of auxillary to the right of the engineers and four groups of legionaries to the left backed up by 2 scorpions in the middle.
The goal was for the engineers to pack up their kit (by rolling a D6 each turn and getting to a total of 12) and head to one of the long table edges before i could catch and destroy them.
I was pleased to see a general lack of cavalry and skirmishers on the Roman side which gave me a big advantage in terms of manoeuvrability.
We started off playing in centimetres but deployed based on the inches shown in the book. You’ll see later we changed this as it would have taken the engineers about 10 turns to get off the board based on where they were!
I rolled up my deployment point and it was at the end the auxillary were deployed which suited me fine as the Roman legion are scary!
I also put down my 6 ambush points, none of which were scouted due to a lack of roman cavalry or exploritoras. This really game me a benefit as I could spring troops from either end of the table should I need to.
Due to the timed nature of the game I couldn’t be defensive and so my opening act was to deploy my first mob on my deployment point and raise fervour, they weren’t particularly interested though as I rolled a 1!
I also deployed my cavalry next to my mob but went up the table where really I should have deployed them closer to my board edge to scout around the forest looking for flank/rear charges.
We got lucky in the first turn and every chit came out before the tempus fugit card so everyone got to activate.
My second mob came out of a ambush point to the north of the auxillary to try and catch the in a flanking manoeuvre, they followed up a group of fanatics which charged headlong into the auxillary troops in order to disrupt them before my main mob came crashing in.
The roman turn was unfortunately fairly ineffective with one of the scorpion crew missing their target and the other killing one gaul in my mob.
The roman legionaries marched to help their auxillary out as I had now deployed the majority of my force so he knew where the main thrust would hit.
I then deployed my skirmishers to block off the Romans escape route to the west of the board whilst at the same time harassing the romans with sling and javelin.
We had a slow few turns as we were still playing in centimetres and not getting anywhere fast so shortly switched to inches.
The fanatics that were attacking the auxillaries continued their onslaught, because it was in the flank it put the fight as a 1 vs 1 which helped massively.
The auxillary braced themselves, literally against my mob coming into range, now split in two fighting on two fronts.
The legionaries continued to march towards the fray to add their weight, though the two forests made the fighting scene congested making it hard for them to get to the action.
The Gallic cavalry didnt activate at all during these few turns and also wouldnt do for the rest of the game, my level 3 leaders chit didnt come out at all! Obviously just watching the foor sloggers do the work.
The roman engineers had now managed t pack up their gear and were heading towards the western exit but had to make it through some skirmisher groups that had initially been attacking the roman legionary rear but now turned their attention to the games objective.
The gallic mob in the front of the auxillary managed to break the group that had also been flanked. Which left the flanking gauls out of position and in a precarious place with legionaires to their flank.
We got a bit confised at this point as the legionaires and the gallic mob were corner to corner but the legionaries didnt have enough movement to do a formation wheel and so couldnt attack the mob. This felt a bit off so we said they could turn to their right and flank the gauls, which quickly sent the contacted team running.
The Gallic mob which was stillfighting with the auxillarys was having a hard time after they got pushed back after a round of fighting anf ended up getting tworounds of pilum to the face which really shook them up. They backed off further and started to rally off the shock.
The more succesful mob nearer the top of the table managed to break the auxillary and opened a gapto the legionary flank
First game out of lockdown (preamble)
So it’s the weekend this project has been building to. I have a 200 pt game against ze Roman’s!
Ive not been overly smart in what I am printing and painting and so hadn’t initially created a list and printed that off. In true style I printed what I thought looked cool and painted that up.
Now I need to make a list out of what I have.
I am going for the gauls so that was an easy start and fortunately infamy has suggested starter army lists so I could pick one of those as the base for my first 95 points.
That got me the following:
- Level 3 leader
- 2 x 6 noble cavalry
- Level 2 leader
- 1 x 10 noble warriors
- 2 x 10 warriors
- 1 x 6 slingers
A good starting 95 point force which I can bulk out and add some more fun stuff too.
What is am adding:
- 1 level 2 leader
- 1 musician
- 2 level 1 leaders
- 2 x 6 fanatics
- 1 x 10 noble warriors
- 2 x 10 warriors
- 1 x 6 slingers
- 1 x 6 javelin men
The idea here is that I will have two mobs comprising of 1 group of noble warriors backed up by 2 groups of warriors. Each having a level 2 and a level 1 leader.
Each of these groups will be able to spring fanatics at any point allowing them to hit the Roman’s and stop them reacting before sending the rest of the troops in.
The slingers are most effective against romans heavy armour so 2 lots of these I felt was a must. Then 6 javelins to round out the remaining points.
The level 3 leader will get a musician to help out activating units within 18″ of him rather than the usual 9″, primarily so I can get units doing what I want when I want rather than hoping for their chits to be drawn.
I’ll be up against around 6 groups Of legionnaires which is a scary prospect and support elements.
We have pre rolled the scenario and I have to destroy some roman engineers before they get Off the board so my idea is to go in fast with the cavalry before the Roman’s Can make a move whilst also getting my skirmish elements up the board to harass the main line of legionnaires. I’ll hold my warriors in ambush hoping to get the jump on any Roman’s and see how that plays out.
Spent last night going through the rules to make sure there wasnt anything I had forgotten and Rich from too fat lardies has a good set of tutorials on YouTube Which were a must. In want to spend As much time playing and as little time reading the rules as possible!
Basin my force
Aside from the flocking I mentioned In my earlier post the actual basing of the models was designed on tinkercad.
Each model is on a 1cm round base and i designed trays for 5 models. Infamy has units of 10 so this way I can track casualties with a dice until I lose 5 then i can take off a tray.
The 3d models did not come with bases so I basing them individually before putting on a tray of 5 made them easier to paint and pose on the movement trays. They’ve been glued in place so I dont have to transport 15mm minis individually.
Basing method (flock box required)
During this project i decided to go with a spring feel as I assume campaign season starts early in the ancient times.
Given that I got some spring flock from dorspring.co.uk to use to base all my gauls up.
To add a bit of variety I wanted to add some tufts and flowers to break up the uniformity of the grass.
Luckily I own a flock box so using some 4mm light green flock and dark green I made up some tufts.
Next I took aome 1mm coloured Flock and pva and stuck it to the top of the tufts to create the red flowers.
Following some advice from Gerry on one of the weekenders I got some flowersoft off ebay and gave that a try instead. The picture below shows the results.
I’m pretty pleased with the purple flowers, mainly because the material is like little balls of colour. The white that I got was too stringy and I dont think it works as well. I got a few colours and the red was similar I’ll add a comparison Pic to show.
Lesson learnt was look closely at the product, they are not all the same material!
Either way I’m super happy with the result in the main and can use these colourful flowers on my 28mm models too, the batch below should last a while.
Thanks @avernos for the tip!
