1/72 Macedonian and Carthaginian Armies

About the Project
I am starting to paint 1/72 historical miniatures. Even though as far as I am aware the two armies never fought one another I like both nations and can imagine situations where the two sides would be fighting. I aim to paint and base them to table top standard. I also want to base them so they can be used for a variety of games. -

48 Hypaspists
I painted 48 Hypaspists.
first I painted the clothes vampire red and desert yellow.
Then I used a thinned down barbarian flesh mixed with dessert yellow to paint the skin.
I then painted the spear shafts mournfang brown and the spear tips silver. I also painted the shields silver.
Finnally I painted the standards orange.

More Cavalry
I painted 12 more cavalry men in the same way as in my previous article. These came with weapons so I did not need to make my own.
30 Javelinmen
Next I painted 30 javelinmen in a similar way. However this time I used dessert yellow for the clothes. Again, I have not yet based them as I wanted to base them all together.
Greek mercenary peltasts
I decided to work on my light infantry in small groups rather than all at once. First i decided to paint my greek mercenary peltasts. When I was priming these models with a brush on primer much of the primer pooled in the recesses of the models and flowed off the higher areas. I decided that this was fine and to use this to my advantage as the light colour of the plastic meant that there was a natural variation in lighting. I decided to thin my paints when I was painting the clothes and skin so they were like a wash or contrast paint. First I painted the clothes vampire red and the skin dessert yellow
I was fairly happy with the result despite the fact that when I zoom in with a camera it seems to have a very glossy finish. I then painted the spears brown, the plumes orange and the boots, sword and helmets silver. I have not yet based the minis as I am planning to base the entire army at once.
Greek mercenary peltasts
Instead of painting large numbers of models at the same time for my light infantry I decided to do each type of skirmisher separately. The first unit I tried were ten Greek mercenary peltasts
When I was priming the brush on primer did not Stick onto the entire model and instead pooled near lower down in the miniature. In the end I decided to use this to my advantage and paint with paints thinned down to a point where they were essentially washes or contrast paints. I painted the skin in a thinned mixture of dessert yellow and skeleton bone and painted the cloth vampire red.
I think this worked out quite well although The miniature seems to have quite a gloss finish in the zoomed in camera. I then went on and painted the spear shafts brown, the boots, helmets and swords silver and the plumes orange. I have not yet based the as I intend to do that at the end
Phalanx
I painted 72 macedonian phalangites.
After priming I painted the clothes and most armour in a mixture of dessert yellow and skeleton bone. I also painted the skin barbarian flesh.
I then painted the shields, armour and helmets in a mixture of weapon bronze and desert yellow and highlighted it up to pure weapon bronze.
Finnally I used strong tone ink on the clothes and skin and highlighted the most raised edges with the original colours.
The models did not come with their spears and I am not sure how to make them. I have seen broomstick or modelling wire been suggested but I think I will leave this stage until I decide on the easiest course of action.
Companion Cavalry
Next I painted all of the cloth that sits on the horses back (I am not sure of the proper name for this) vampire red and highlighted with a mixture of the same colour and lava orange. I also did the same with the capes and plumes of the cavalrymen.
I also painted the hair of the horses with a mixture of gorgons hide and skeleton bone.
I painted any pectoral armour and helmets on the men with weapon bronze and all the leather in desert yellow.
Since the kit did not come with any xystons i created my own by whitling down toothpicks to the appropriate size. I was not very good at this so after an half an hour or so i selected the best sticks and slotted them in the hands. These were far smaller than regular xystons and not of regular lenght so we can say that these people had been given all the xystons that had not been made properly during production. I did not glue these in because if i want to make improved versions in the future I want to be able to swap them out. I painted these to look like sticks and then Painted spear heads on each end. One of them was far to short and became a sword.
I painted a few more details but some are too small for me to see while painting, let alone while playing. I might come back to fix these later but for now they are done. I also have not based these as I want to do that for the whole army at the end.
