About the Project

Having been a fan of Sharp Practice, I was very happy to see Too Fat Lardies were releasing a rules sets for ancients. Having never dabbled in this period before, I quickly watched the Lardies' youtube videos about what was needed to play, and headed off to the interwebz to but stuff! This is a log of how I get along. I hasten to add that this project is a speed painting exercise and much use of contrast paints will ensue! Historical accuracy may be a touch iffy. Please enjoy :D

I almost always prime with an airbrush, I’ve yet to find a convincing bone primer though, the Vallejo mecha bone primer just clogs my airbrush every few seconds, so I used my favourite instead Vallejo USN Light Ghost Grey.  Goes on lovely and smooth.  Just for time scale reference, this was the 8th of June… this is, after all, supposed to be a speed painting project

First things first, I had to build them.  The Romans were simple enough, single piece torso, stick on an arm and a head and glue to a penny washer, I left the shields seperate so I could paint the left legs and done.  The Celts, ah, the Celts.  Should have been simple but the ball joint waaist and a couple of the back poses made for some models being posed in a way that would upset many a Chiropractor.  Then it was weapons and shields.  With the open stance of the Celts I decided I’d glue them on before painting

and the Celts

The last image shows the rather squat positioning of the Celts.  Odd, but bearable.

Once built it was time to get them undercoated

A big box of plastic... and rulesA big box of plastic... and rules

This seemed a good starting point, I’m aware the Warlord Romans and Celts have certain issues (being 12 year old sculpts, and if I recall correctly, Warlord’s first plastic kits), the Romans are a touch short and squat, and the multipose Celts, have a couple of poses that look really uncomfortable.

Having the Hail Caesar rulebook in there is nice.  Should I ever buy a multitude of ancient toys then it’s another system I can play.

Although a few of my friends are also buying into this game, I decided to do 2 forces.  This is because I can then have games at home with my children.

So first purchase was made.  More have followed (bases from Warbases, more toys as well) but they’ll be in a later post
