About the Project

Original Project on hold. Butcherd for geting the Amara emblem out there. Original: I need Terrain for a soon to start Normandy Campaign with a close friend. So far we tested several gaming Systems and scales aaaaaand have not decided what will stick. As i also have GW-Lord of the Rings, Infinity-MO and an expeditionary Tau army i want to build a piece thats equally usable in 28mm and 1:72/76/20mm. This way we have something to fight about and give scale to the battlefield. This should help us decide on the scale. Bolt Action as a System is bound to stick as i can play it with a local club too so the natural conclusion was to start this as part of the boot camp contest. My aim is a completly build but only rough coloured house by sunday afternoon.

I needed a bit more info for the window sizes, chimnies, doors and overall "normal" arrangements. I also have sketched out a small plan on how to achieve multiple scales within as few components as possible.

Here you can see the 3 different Versions of Amara the immortal carrier.

  1. is the Orignl carrier that took part in the twitch battle on 29.09.2018. While its machine gun didnt exceed the expectations its survivability sure did. Over the game it took an estimated 4 pak40 shots, permanent MG42 fire and a full Opel Blitz of Mortar rounds. Are these numbers and encounters exagerated? How dare you question its holyness Amara! She got the holes to show and anybody claiming those might just be pak38 holes maybe put on latrine duty immideatly. Amara was the center piece of the defensive, constantly drawing fire and saving many sikh lives like this. When she prepared for a final charge the moral of the germans broke and they fled in terror. Amara, the slightly pierced, the crispy burned, the barely shoked shall be rembered forever and ever as Amara, the immortal god!
  2. Thats the crude attempt of a mere mortal to capture its holyness as it rolled of the field. Obviously in an attempt to capture the inherent greatness of amara, wings and some bling was added
  3. another curde rendering of Amara by a mortal. Aimed to simplify the emblem to be set up as paintable on tanks an vehicles.

figuring out lines and test piece 2cent

  1. finding a rough order of lines and reducing the simpel version further as much as needed due to scale. even with a stabilo its really hard to not mess up the line and get it done in as little strokes as possible
  2. test piece for the colors and the underlieng blocks. i chose to pain the black lines over it and could there for afford the blocking. black lines used this way would however require more effort on an actual model because the outline would be in another color so maybe a black circle is advised
  3. first test with actual paint on a 2cm diameter 2cent (€) space. i feel like its still vastly to big for 20mm for sure but for 28mm it might end up the size of the usual white big white star, that americans painted on m3/m5 carriers
final attempt for today. im not used to painting emblems in this size, normally relieng on decals or sculpted details. i might attempt a 1cent piece tomorrow but i think i would still have to drop some lines. even my smallest brush feels over sized for this. final attempt for today. im not used to painting emblems in this size, normally relieng on decals or sculpted details. i might attempt a 1cent piece tomorrow but i think i would still have to drop some lines. even my smallest brush feels over sized for this.

the first 2cent piece from yesterday night next to the 1 cent piece with less sleepy eyes and a better idea on how to block it out.

Further simplyfications: removed the “bulk” in the front and settled for only one wheel in the back.

Further added details: Added punjabi Amara text. ਅਮਰ. first on the old test run piece. After that in a slow dipdipdipmovement on the new one. nerv wrecking but worth it

Amara on a 1:72 Sherman as prove of concept

Size comparison of the 2cent, 1cent and on tank version. I sadly only had a sherman build up and no british equipment layng around to build up fast. Further more the sherman is 1:72 so you should have a lot more space to work with on a 28mm model.

What i learned from the tank application:

  • Amara text needs to be simplfied further. I went with only the straight lines, the bulge at the end and a w-shape at the start. Overall you should grasp what i did comparing it to the crisp 1cent version
  • The 1 cent version has the better feel to it with one less black line at the front.
  • Don’t think of the passenger compartment as a box on top that 50% of size. It should be close to 75% size. with reducing overall size by blacklining you will size it down enough to be just right. check 1cent version
  • Wings are a problem the smaller you get because of the colour and the layers of colour you might need >> so stick to a simpler geometry

Painting step by step

Step 1: Grasp the basic geometry. for this emblem it would be a fitting shield form.

Step 2a red: Chassis the chassis should make up roughly 30-50% of the space you will occupy. the red lines indicate the first run you will take to block it out. The passengers compartment should be thought of as ~75% of size. I went with 50% for the tank and 75% for the 1cent and on the cent its much more pleasing and true to reality.

2b: vertical lines to get the edges crips. in the green area you may or may not have to extend your corrections a little. just keep in mind that the colour of the wings will be layerd over that area any how so correction might not be needed just yet

Step 3: Tracks. Pretty straight forward. just make sure you end the triangle roughly where the end of the shield would be in the middle. otherwise you will tilt the perspective.Step 3: Tracks. Pretty straight forward. just make sure you end the triangle roughly where the end of the shield would be in the middle. otherwise you will tilt the perspective.
Step4: wings. the wings are straight forward. i tested half circles as a starting point but lines work far better when trying to maximize usage of space and getting it done clean. you can layer the colour pre blacklining but i would advice against to much. more layers of colour might be needed for the blackline correctionStep4: wings. the wings are straight forward. i tested half circles as a starting point but lines work far better when trying to maximize usage of space and getting it done clean. you can layer the colour pre blacklining but i would advice against to much. more layers of colour might be needed for the blackline correction

finish: black line the mode. i did it with a brush that was still to big and barely able to thin its peak down far enough. I have read good things about using aquarell pencils for blacklining so that might be worth a try.

the text is very simple version of the original punjabi becomes a tilted W going into an N into a “d” all connected via one straight line at the top. check the 1cent version for crisper lines
