About the Project

An ongoing painting project of my two armies. I enjoy the painting of them, so I tend to buy more interesting tanks and mobile guns. I don't think about army effectiveness, and I haven't battled them out yet! I tend to just go with what looks good, which means I would fail in any tournament. So far for my Airborne team, I have 10 riflemen, a 2-man machine gun team and a 2-man mortar team. There is a Sherman, a Chaffee and now a Priest self-propelled gun. My Fallshirmjägers are a little more rounded: 7 riflemen, 3 with SMGs, a lieutenant, a medic and radio operator, 2 machine gun teams and a 3-man mortar team. I have a Panzer III, a Marder III and a Sd.Kfz. 251 with an anti tank emplacement on the top. More pictures soon!

Sidetracked: Organizing my Dreadball Teams

I have a lot of Dreadball teams sitting on my desk with no where to go. They come in lovely little boxes, but I don’t like storing them in there when they have their paint on them, and a lot of them just don’t fit when they’re assembled… so I wanted to come up with a solution.

I have been waiting to buy a CNC machine so I can properly cut my own foam and make my own boxes, but I’ve been putting that off because I’m scared of the noise and the dust those things kick up. So it’s time to turn on the 3D printer and get moving!

I made a rack of 12 slots that perfectly hold a Dreadball hex. Just a pressure fit. The print works well, even with the overhangs because I made the top rail have angled rails that meet the strut. If this hadn’t worked, it would have been a very droopy print.

Next, I happened to realize that I had a lovely wooden box that I got years ago that perfectly holds the rack that I made, so I will be able to fit ALL of my teams inside it (even the giants!). Now I just have to build some kind of internal rails to slide each tray into. This is actually not an easy task, but I’ll figure it out!

Finished up my little half-track, so I decided to put it in a scene. This was all made in VR. I love Quill!

This is becoming a theme.

A friend of mine had a Tamiya Schwimmwagon that was aching to be painted so I gave it a quick blast and some highlighting.A friend of mine had a Tamiya Schwimmwagon that was aching to be painted so I gave it a quick blast and some highlighting.

I’ve got myself a VR headset and now I can’t stop sketching in 3D. What’s cool is, all the things I’ve learned about painting miniatures carries over to painting in 3D! Highlighting, shadow, color variation. I’m super happy.

Damnit! My friend is running an RPG campaign (his own creation) and I wanted to make some things to go with it. Firstly, I painted up this Dust figure:

Next I have been trying to make an ammo counter that I can 3D print out. These are great to get the gravitas of spending a bullet rather than just counting with pencil on a page.

At first I just modeled the bullets and cylinder, but my friend kept giving me new weapons with different calibers and different clip / revolver capacities! So I decided to make an arithmetic model in OpenSCad that means if he ever changes them, I can just print new ones. You just type in dimensions of the rounds, and it can auto-compute the cylinder size.

Try it out if you want to! Just download OpenSCad and get this file:

And then, in secret, I ordered these drones from Gates of Antares as they are the perfect enemies for my friend’s campaign. I have a good start on them, but obviously some work left to do.

Also, here’s a logo I made for his campaign. It’s set on another planet permanently living in a “diesel-punk” era. There are wild monsters, air pirates and ancient technology. I love the setting!

I’ll try to get back onto WWII stuff soon!

So here’s where I currently stand.

I have a lot of German Winter soldiers to paint up, and my Airborne command needs paint too. Hopefully this project blog will get me going again!

I’ve recently got going on the M7 Priest, and I’ve done some pretty heavy highlighting which I really like. I might have to go back and add this to my other vehicles.
