Getting To Grips With The Mechanics Of Warpath 2.0
October 6, 2015 by warzan
If you've been wondering about the mechanics and units of Warpath 2.0 by Mantic Games then you won't want to miss this video.
Warren is joined by Stewart in the studio to have a look at some of the rules and unit types that you will encounter in the Warpath universe.
We also delve into some of the flavoursome aspects of the game that really add to your battles.
Have you backed this campaign?

Nice to see filming in the… Cage? Beastitorium? Did you guys settle on an official name yet?
oh btw first 😉
‘oh btw first’
But… but… thats the second comment! O_O
Yeah…. But….. Nevermind….
Looks like FoW with those unit bases which I happen to like no small bit. Looking forward to the end result.
Looks like a lot of fun, damn my lack of funds
Pledge what you can now, and then more on the Pledge Manager later on 😉
Or sell a kidney or two…
Pledge $1 and get the rule/source books in PDF. Play with your existing models as proxies. Also able to up pledge after it closes to spread cost.
Quite impressed by this, looks good, and most importantly, fun. Can’t help but feel that many games currently are borrowing liberally from each other these days as many similar mechanics pop up all over the place. Wonder if that’s an indication of finding the optimal solution for that particular mechanic, or it’s just the Cavatore effect (in that he writes almost everything these days!). Still, it might be the game that fills the scifi hole my club has been looking to plug for a while now.
There’s very little originality these days, so the real choice we have is to pick the game(s) that has/have the most elements we like and go with it.
Most systems these days just seem to be using mechanics from 30 to 40 years if not older
There isn’t much originality out there
I left the hobby in the early noughties, and find the current design philosophies have totally changed on my return. Everything is easier and faster and these days. Gone are the times of self-printed A5 booklets full of charts, bad illustrations and poorly laid out rules, where a single turn took as long as some full games do today. I was considering submitting an article to Sam about this very subject for Backstage. I’m not saying the current mantra of quick and easy is wrong, but there’s a lack of detail that was abundant (and thereby slower) in the past.
I think it’s to do with the rise of tournament-focused games. There’s a definite tendency towards competitive play and the need to fit in several games in a day definitely lends itself to quicker, easier rulesets. As much as I loved 2nd Ed 40K, I think holding a 6 round tournament with those rules would have been a nightmare!
I love the mechanical simplicity allied with the tactical options and the orders system. Glad to be backing yet another Mantic KS. All Hail Ronnie!
Now, where the Hell is Blaine and that Asterian grav tank/transport?
Looking great…can’t wait to give it a go!
Have backed warpath, but I must say I really enjoy this format of video to introduce a game system. Battle reports kind of assume you know a bit about the game already, but this ‘walk through, talk through’ is very useful
Warren and his infectious enthusiasm… my wallet can’t take it damnit!
Was on the fence… “got plenty of stuff to paint”, “really don’t need another game”…
But you had to come along and force me to make a pledge…
Damn you!
Yes, another Mantic KS which i am backing… cant wait to combine it with the Deadzone Stuff i have (and will receceive early 2016), i enjoy the fast gaming that Mantic games offer, like Kings of War. Easy rules but loads of options ans tactical variants to play..
I hadn’t read the alpha rules thoroughly and i was a bit ‘meh’ about the whole game but this really opened my eyes. After the order dice bit I was sold on the game. Though i will probably wait for general release, I may look into what 15mm sci-fi ranges i can use.
From reading the alpha rules I think it’s going to be more of a 6 or 15mm game
Watching that made me more excited for Warpath than I already was! The shooting focus (rather than combat) in particular. My pet hate with 40K was that, in a future filled with nuclear bullets and laser guns, poking someone with a stock was more effective! Warpath seems the opposite and I like the look of it very much.
Stick*
sounds like may be a great game.
Excellent overview. Any chance we could get something similar for Firefight scale?
Hey, great to finally have a video of the general concepts of how Warpath 2.0 works.
When does the Kickstarter start? /s… kinda
Its already started. There’s only 4 days left.
15mm Sci fi action may just get me back into that genre for large battles anyways. Having a system that allows gaming at various encounter levels is great for narrative. Larger battles using the main warpath rules for the mass invasion on the planet, zooming right down to a deadzone game to secure the orbital comms post or the like…
I think I’ll be trying these rules for my 15mm stuff, a massive battle just doesn’t look massive enough in 28mm for me!
I like it even for normal 40K-level games. Quick, dirty, fast-paced games look like good fun.
does anybody know where the green barricades and watchtowers are from?
Looks nice. I would like to see pentagon-shaped unit bases for the 5 man teams. It fits with the sci-fi look, represents a blob of soldiers, and is equilateral.
Bases are completely optional, so make your own and enjoy!
Surprised ithas not done better, its done well but not oustanding. Like the Asterians too…but where marauders?
They’re completely rethinking and redesigning Marauders. It could take a while so they aren’t part of this KS as an independent faction. They’ll get their day in the sun further down the line. Until then, they’ll be a subset of the GCPS list.
THIS..LOOKS…AWESOME!!!
This looks amazing.. The kickstarter ends 1 day before my pay day …… curse you monthly pay 🙁
As said above pledge a dollar then add in through the pledge manager later 🙂
Try to pledge what you think you will want to help get the stretch goals. Don’t over-extend though.
Blaine is back! (As long as we hit 2808 backers – currently at 2772).
Late to the party here (it’s been quite a week in “real life” world).
I am seriously impressed! I especially love the charge reactions, discouraging close combat unless you’ve softened them up first (I hope Bolt Action 2 “borrows” these ideas); and best of all: orders. I love this as a means for giving armies flavour without a myriad of special rules to look up.
I like this game so much more than I thought I would. Well done Mantic!
Thanks for doing this intro. I’ve backed Mantic kickstarters before but have always been a bit on the fence and off the fence – mainly over the inconsistent (in my view) quality and art direction of their models.
So I’d thought I might sit this one out. I’ve been planning on waiting for Gates of Antares to provide a fast, fun and tactical alternative to using the 40K rules with my 40K miniatures, but this video has convinced me that I might have two games to choose from!
So I went ahead and pledged yet again…
I threw a ton of money at this! I hope I can gather a good sized group near me so I can fully incorporate everything I paid for. It will take me a while to do even some of the painting once stuff shows up. So, I guess I have time. It looks to be a great game with many options (small scale and large). And man, those vehicles !!
