Bolt Action Battles: The Demo Game Part 2

Time for the conclusion to Warren and Andy's epic game of Bolt Action with Alessio playing rules master! Will Warren's lovely little STUG III get blown to bits or will German engineering hold up against the crack shots of the American army?

Well I’m sold….
I want to see the FUBAR chart!!! As people who watch my videos they should know if it was me most of my men would end up shooting themselves into the loss!
The moral mechanic is where the game is won and lost and that seems very real to me
Extremely interesting pair of videos of what looks like an exciting and challenging game system.
One thing I wasn’t too sure of was how much Warren enjoyed the game, with the FOW videos I could see his enjoyment of playing the game. However, with Bolt Action I wasn’t so sure, but that could be because it was more challenging?
It’s a great game, remember this was my first (kinda 2nd) game though. And I’m playing someone else’s miniatures.
FoW FTW I’m unlocking my FoW hobby, with my minis etc, and I have no doubt as I get into bolt action I will feel the same 🙂
But I’m actually thinking about going American in bolt action lol (but 28mm Nactwolfe is increasingly hard to resist)
And it seems from the post above I’m gonna have a playing partner in @lafayette 🙂
Name the time and the place ;)…. though Ill still lose lol
I have British winging its way to me as wee speak!!
Firefly Shermans at 28mm was too hard to turn down 😀
@warzan , You know the answer to that is easy – do both 😉
Thanks, for the reply, it’s a game that I’m very tempted to do myself 🙂
But Americans? You’re passing up being British Paratroopers or Commandoes?
Loved this vid and would like to see more games played out
Really, really good pair of vids, fellas. I had a nosey at an old mate’s Bolt Action Germans over xmas (no game though, boo). This game just looks awesome. There’ll be an order for some Brits heading Warlord’s way not too long after payday.
Alessio – this is a complete winner!
After watching this two part video I am seriously tempted to pick up the US Screaming Eagles. Are they going to get replaced by a plastic boxed set any time soon, I wonder?
Bloody marvellous game – and the presentation and spirit in which it was played were exemplary. I started with WW2 a very, very long time ago and last year I started back with it again in FOW 15mm for larger action, but I will certainly be getting some Bolt Action stuff because as Warren said, that chaos element really gives it a razor edge of tension throughout. Snipers are very effective when used properly and airstrikes scare the bejasus out of everyone – I suppose buying lots of pinning markers will be a necessity 😀 Fantastic demo game folks.
Or you could make them out of spare weapons from the kits clued to bases…. Just an idea
@ Lafayette:
Order test roll turns up as double 6: roll another D6: on a 1-2 you fire at own troops within 12″, otherwise you go down.
3-6, you panic (run away) from the closest visible enemy unit, otherwise you go down.
Warren and Dave should make a special mechanic for increased FUBAR possibility.
Like just letting me play 😀 If I have dice rolls like I have been lately its not that much out of the realm of possibility
Fubar is brutal. My friend had the game in the pocket, then he tried to charge me with one pin marker. Blam a 12. He ran away, so much for british commandos. Then he tried to rally. Blam a 12. He shot his own LT. Game in the pocket for me….
Damn an other game the seem to have made it on to the MUST HAVE list
I have no idea what Warren has planed for BA but if he does want to do some BoW videos and wants a co presenter Id be up for the job….
Cant do a worse job of it than I already do lol
@warzan, my wallet approves this idea. Damn 28mm WWII *$%@(%* !!!
Check out youtube channel of ethan thomas, he has basic gameply vids, verry good. In the line of battlefronst boot camp vids. Also jamie tranter is posting a live bolt action tournement on youtube. Verry good stuff
have to agree there ethans channel is great for showing you how the game works
…Awesome game!!!!….i loved the chaos factor and the miniatures….thank you very much!!!!!
Goddamnit Beasts of War! I had zero interest in WW2 gaming but first you show off FoW, which looks great, and now this?! What are you trying to do to me?! 😉
Looks like a fantastic rule set and great fun =)
well i’m sold got my books and dice in the post and i can just use my 40k imp guard till we get some plastic brit paras from warlord
Easy company all the way for me
Can’t help wondering how many of us have taken up a new game as a result of watching a BoW video.
Great stuff @warzan I have really enjoyed your recent forays into WWII with this game and FoW. Watching someone who confesses to having a limited historical knowledge obviously having fun will hopefully tempt a few more gamers to broaden their horizons.
yes, Nice to see historical game and not hear the same old joke about button counting
its the true successor to 40k look at the name behind the rules and the army books Rick, Alessio ,Andy Chambers ,Jake Thornton and Warwick Kinrade names that made wargameing and modeling part of my life
there also some plastic perry brother Desert Rats here http://www.perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?cPath=22_62&products_id=2843
Nice to see Warren getting all tense and squirmy for once! That was damn close for quite a while there.
Warren genuinely looks like he’s been there…..I think he will be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder for a week or two. Stugsplosion followed by his favourite staffer turning to red mist when he thought the job was done and he was home and dry….poor lad.
@ wildcardtbc I think all my 40k games from now on will be using a version of the “bag method” for initiative. It must be doable…
A cracking couple of videos guys, I’ve been playing Bolt Action since it came out and my gaming group love it.
We all like the simple mechanics, but more importantly the atmosphere that it brings.
i look forward to seeing what else you do with it, thanks again.
These two bolt action videos have been excellent, helped clear up a few of the rules for me too. I’ve only played a couple of small games so far with my Germans both of which have been against the Brits and both I’ve lost really quite badly (curse their free artillery observer!) but it really is a great system. In fact I might go as far as saying it’s one of the best rule sets I’ve ever played.
I say this purely because it combines a lot of things I like in a wargame. It makes morale and your commander absolutely vital to success. It uses modifiers to represent how difficult a shot is rather than a contrived cover save system (looking at you 40k). The turn structure provides a fog of war as neither side will ever be quite sure what’s going to happen next which makes for a much more interesting battle. And finally 28mm scale historical miniatures are a joy to paint.
ok!…………….ok!……………i’m sold! take my money!……………thank’s Warren and the lads for a great couple of vids in fact lots more BA vids PLEASE!
Has anyone tried this excellent game system with any other genre? 40k? Weird war 2? post apoc? i would be very interested to hear how it played out?
Some of the chaps I know have used it for Very British Civil War, a pre war game and it worked very well indeed
I have to say a big thanks as I have the rules, recently buying them, and this has explained a lot about the rules and the mechanics to me and showed what a great system it is.
I would like to see more vids thats for sure maybe something that explained the army/country specific rules and how the forces are built for the game.
Nice one there Chaps
cheers @panzerkaput i will get the rules and try it out on a different genre! i never do things simple!
FYI the Book Depository (www.bookdepository.co.uk) have the rules for £16 right now and the “Armies Of” books for around £9.50 each, all with free shipping. Obviously the Assault on Normandy is still your best bet if you (and perhaps a friend) know you want to collect a German and US army.. but if you just want to check out the rules or you want to start a force that isn’t included in the Normandy box this is a cheap way to do it.
Thoroughly enjoyed both of these vids. Will try not repeat my post but went to my local store today and shock/horror, they didn’t have any of the starter sets. Just the dice and a couple of unrecognized boxes. Was really looking for starter set.
Will have to order.
BAftw????
Yes please.
You can definately see the caliber of the designers in the simplicity and yet at the same time complexity of the rules.
40K was so dead to me and this was the final nail in the coffin.
I got Eldar and Space Wolves for sale…anyone???
Amazon has the rulebook for $25.24 with free shipping, not bad to get the base rules to muck with. Quite an enjoyable game to watch I echo other posters asking for more Bolt Action.
As it is mainly Infantry based game I also like the idea of being able to fight in the Burma theatre with the Chindits verses the Japanese, or in the Pacific theatre with the US Marines verses the Japanese.
Keep up the good work guys another cool video.
Fantastic two vids. Warlord Games have really knocked theball out of the park with Bolt Action. The table you guys played on Warren is just amazing. I can highly recommend the Bolt Action Army box starter sets. That with the rulebook is all you need and then some.
Dang it! I’ve been trying to stay focused on my Dystopian Wars armies. But this video has really got me excited to get my germans going. Khan!
Well done guys, for your first Bolt action game coverage you certainly hit the nail on the head. Great example of what a compelling system it is, looking forward to more, maybe some North Africa action on your desert canyon board… just an idea 🙂
With the Gates of Antares rules being brought more in line with Bolt Actions I can only hope to see good things from that too later in the year.
Hi guys!
Really like your report. But do you have any better pics of the two buildings you used? Or can tell me where these are from?
Best battlereport on BoW to date. Immediately after waching it twice during a painting session. I ordered the Normandy Starter as well as a M5 Sherman and a Panzer IV. I hope so much there will be more Bolt Action batreps. Alessio as a dice bag fairy was awesome.
I dont know but FoW really sinks if I compare it to Bolt Action in case of sheer fun and enjoyment.
Reading the Bolt Action rulebbook is fluid and it never beats you down with rule overkill. It has a relativley light ruleset but is still deep and most importantly all decsions have weight !
It is clearly became my favorite ruleset within hours of reading.
Thank you one again ! Walord you got my money and time.
