Thoughts on the New Necrons by Starminer
October 16, 2011 by crew
Well, it's all been very exciting recently, if you are a 40K player, and even more exciting if you are a Necron player or fan.
Beasts of War have got a very nice scoop with leaked pictures of plenty of new Necron models, which will be available to purchase starting on November 5th.
So frantic and furious was the online activity that it actually forced Beasts of War to shut down their front page just to support the leak, that's just how exciting this news is.
Sure, we all knew something was up, and many people were saying Necrons are coming, but it's been an extremely long time since this kind of leak has caused a flash fire to spread across the web so quickly and cause such an overwhelming response....presumeably of approval.
Some might say these are all new designs....but they are not all new concepts. In fact, quite a few of the images of the new necrons actually were conceived of conceptually when the Necrons were first developed, back in the early days of 3rd edition!
Now, let's take a journey into the past and have a look at something older.... pictures that go back to the development of the first Necron Codex... What I have managed to do is dig up some old concept art of the original Necron development, and will present to you just a few of those classic sketches so we can see how much they influenced the new range of models, and how far back they have gone for inspiration. I think you'll like what we find.
First, there is this Necron with the stubby looking heavy weapon, which bears a very striking resemblance to the new Necron Immortal with Gauss Blaster. There are some slight differences in the barrel, but all of the other implied shapes are present in this gun. And you can see the Egypto-tech style detailing on the shoulder and collar bone armour that is very similar to the details on the new special characters and the other Elite models.
Next we see a series of what are called "Barques" and "Barges" in the concept art. Notice the upright pilot position, and the almost perfect replication of that general control spine, as well as the ribbed shapes, engine nozzles, and gun shapes of each of the vehicles. Obviously the new models were heavily influenced, and in a couple of cases direct translations of some of these concept sketches, and what appear to be light to medium skimmer tanks.
So, is that the limit of what we could potentially see for the Necrons? Or is there more. The following sketches imply that we are still only scratching the surface of the Necron arsenal, and that the possiblity for heavy skimmer tanks, and even a super heavy monolith type of tank exist and may even be in development. What an awesome thought, that the Necrons could soon have some new Apocalypse level super heavy tanks.
I've shown you just a few of the concept sketches that I've found, as the rest deal mostly with stuff that has already been modelled, or has been done in an alternate form. But, this just goes to show that Games Workshop doesn't throw old ideas away, and in some cases, resurrects the good ones when the time, and the technology are right.... kind of like the Necrons are doing now it seems...
I for one am super excited about the new Necron line up. I especially like the new Arks and Barges and am happy that the generic Necron has not been radically altered, so there will be no "obsolete" models, at least it seems that way at first glance. I hope this gives Necron players a morale boost and we start seeing some of those old armies that are collecting dust get revitalized, repaired, and potentially repainted.

Amazing how well defined the old concepts were. I hadn’t seen those sketches before, but I’m a massive fan of Jes’ concepts.
@starminer Nice work Mate!
@jesgoodwin Nice work you too sir!
The biggest surprise is why they havent done anything with those designs before, they have obviously translated well into plastic, I wonder what other designs they have sitting there for other armies. I also wanted to say a big thanks to the BoW team for Friday, tough week at work, wife and kids away for the weekend, a big case of stella , a pizza and the night rounded off with loads of pics of new minis to look at, made my night (which , now I’ve written it, makes me sound incredibly sad) I may never field a necron… Read more »
They must have loads of designs tucked away, waiting for the day they can be turned into somthing.
You would wonder if any end up in the hands of the fine guys down in Forgeworld, or is it a case of them having to come up with their own!
I’m quite the fan of the new Necron releases, and considering how loooooong we’ve waited Friday was awesome sauce for us too!
I thought I’d seen the necron warrior sketch before and I had; it’s in Jes’s art book called The Gothic and the Eldritch: The Collected Sketches of Jes Goodwin. It’s full of his awesome sketches and designs with prints of his tracing paper overlays of notes, and photos of the sculpted minis too. The book only has two necron sketches in it though; the warrior and a “Robot/Undead Warmachine” :P, now known as a necron destroyer; which has a more brutal looking weapon, akin to the leaked pics and the sketches above, and rounder looking thrusters than the boxy looking… Read more »
Yep this release made my day. No, my week…no my month. . .
They haven’t pleased everyone but the majority seems positive. Even though they’ve made so many changes they’ve still kept me, for one, happy both in fluff and models. Awesome.
Good work going back to their previous concept work for ideas and inspiration. Should make for some amazing miniatures…and it has since we have seen some previews lol.
Can’t wait to see the rules.
I can see a 1500 point list being written up and models bought. Oh dear. And I was cutting back.
They shoulda gone with that Warbarque in the last pic imho
Seeing monumental archltecture floating across the landscape would be a lot more interesting than the rib chops imho
Ace sketches, if I remember rightly I think these where in a White Dwarf from around the time Necrons where originally released. Im going to have a dig through the back issues and see!
I’ve been complaining about the radical re-writing of the Necron fluff in the Necron group quite forcefully. HOWEVER, this does not mean that I don’t like the updated miniatures. I, in fact, think most are really damn awesome. I am both pleased and very disappointed with what I have seen and read. Kind of a wierd feeling, really…
Hi guys. First. Thanks Warren and the BoW team for inviting me to share this with the Beasts of War world! As has been pointed out, these images and actually quite a few more, have been published throughout many of GW’s art books, source books, White Dwarf, and the web site. I’m a big fan of Jes, and these images just go to show how deeply he and the design team are entrenched in the universe of 40K and how much thought and inspiration he puts into and gets from the lore. I’m certain there are other pieces of art… Read more »
It was a great read, hopefully you fancy doing some more in the future!
@warzan re continuing to write for BoW.
Of course, I will continue writing my blog as time and passion permits, so it is possible there will be more such links. And if BoW will have me on again as a guest writer, I would be happy to continue with new articles.
I have to admit though, my time is at a bit of a premium as I’m currently looking for new work as well as getting my house ready to sell. It’s like having 2 full time jobs at the same time. So my hobby time has suffered dramatically, unfortunately.
Concept art really shows the genesis of the idea of the army. Many of the troops are great and spot on with the art work. For some reason I find the skimmers look good in the concept stage but are some what off in the model stage. I don’t know why that is, it just not my thing.
Starminer wrote that at first glance there are no models that will be made obsolete, but I’ve heard that Pariahs are not included in the new Necron Codex, does anyone have any confirmation on this one way or the other?
“In fact, quite a few of the images of the new necrons actually were conceived of conceptually when the Necrons were first developed, back in the early days of 3rd edition!”
The Necrons were around since 2nd, only the Dark Eldar and Tau were new to 3rd ed….
are you sure re Necron?? I dont recall a codex or anything about them from 2nd ed…but Im not a major 40k player so may have missed some reference. Pointers please?? Ill dig out my 2nd ed collection
As starminer said, yeap they were around as a WD army list. I recall salivating over the old metals when I was young prior to 3rd ed being launched…
Necrons were originally developed in 2nd Edition as a WD army list. They got their first print codex in 3rd edition after they dropped the slim line codex books and went back to the thicker format. All of these concept sketches were from that development.
