Lord Of The Rings & Hobbit News Comes Out Of Throne Of Skulls
April 3, 2016 by brennon
At Throne of Skulls over the weekend it appears some news has dropped on the future of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit with Games Workshop. The video above by Spillforeningen the Fellowship discusses some of the information but you can find out more over on the Great British Hobbit League Facebook Group.
Here is a bit of a breakdown of the news...
- Sourcebooks are being re-printed
- New Sourcebook available in October
- Out of production models will be bought back by Forge World
- Dain should get himself a model!
- Adam Troke will be working on the new books for (at least) four years
- Same overall rules but a new rulebook will be released with tweaked mechanics
- Name will change to Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game
- Game might delve into the Lord of the Rings appendices for content in the future
So, this sounds like a pretty good thing for fans of the Strategy Battle Game. The Throne of Skulls event really seems to have helped towards boosting the profile of the game and getting Games Workshop's information.
What do you think?

There’ll be the usual round of complaints that’s it’s being sold at FW prices but I’d rather pay for the resin than with the metal rip-offs on ebay.
This is awesome news.
Can’t wait for Dain and the Ironfoot. And goats and twirly wirly’s 😉
I haven’t played this in a while. I have fond memories of playing the game with my son when he was small. It’s also my favourite GW game
I am looking forward to this, it was The Fellowship of the Ring Games (and minis) which got me back into the hobby after 10 years of feigning maturity. It is a great clean and easy rules system and easy to learn. Continued support of it would be great…(although not for my bank account)
Good.
Good lord. Another indication that GW is listening, and moving the company in the ‘right’ direction.
Well played, all round.
Great news! Glad some oop minis are coming back! and glad the game will stay the same.
Overall, still my favorite GW game system and models, and seeing the new life coming in to the LoTR/Hobbit hobby is amazing.
Seems like in the waning age of GW support, the customers spoke, and GW listened.
Really great news!
Well that is interesting news for all LotR players.
that’s great news for the players.
What is this feeling I have? I haven’t felt like this for some time with GW that I almost forgot what it was. I think it’s called… happy and proud to support them? YES that is the feeling I have! Been much too long since I felt like this for GW. The past few weeks feel like every announcement from GW has been the right stuff. Keep it up and people will want to play your games, rather than abandon them.
A bit shocking I keep expecting some kind of sting in the tail
And hopefully, we can soon start buying Forgeworld products through the Games Workshop stores! FW is a pain to get when living in Norway. Shipping and import duties makes for now fun. The GW prices have the import duties already in them, and free shipping to the store.
And thanks a lot for sharing our channel! Hope some of you see our SBG Grand Campaign while you’re over there. We’re going through all the scenarios that’s out, going from the Last Alliance to the retaking of the Shire when the hobbits return.
It’s a good game with quite a nice model line, so nice to hear the license is going to disappear. Wonder how much the other IPs influenced this business decision, guess we’ll find out when the next financial report comes in. Rules wise LotR/The Hobbit would be an Age of Sigmar competitor, a superior rules set in my opinion even.
This is great news. Lord of the Rings was the game that started it all for me, my introduction to the hobby, so to speak. I will be watching this with interest 🙂
Great news. The return of LotR and Specialist Games in general is perhaps the best thing to come out of GW in a long while. Finally there is an appreciation that the market for those of us supporting these products is financially viable. I’m still holding my breath for confirmation the Warmaster will be back too.
Love this game. only GW minis i still have. sad they are becoming resin. I personally hate resin as it is brittle and easy to break those spindaly horse legs while playing. like metal much better. but that is my personal opinion. still very glad to se it make a return but was hoping someone like knight minitures would get the next licence for the lotr.
Excellent news, I even love the new name. This is a perfect example for other players (and companies) to stride for, don’t be afraid to support something you enjoy. Cheers.
Very pleased about this news. The game and the line of miniatures did not deserve to be left to wither in obscurity…
GW is going to have me hooked!
I wonder if this game will draw some players who bailed from Warhammer after the AoS debacle? I know when i came out that many people thought it was a good blend of fantasy setting with solid rules.
Fantastic F’ing news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
