Ronnie from Mantic Games talks about their NEW GAME SYSTEM!
July 30, 2010 by johnlyons
Yep! Warren talks to Ronnie Renton of Mantic Games to see just what they are up to and how big their boxes are going to get very soon with the release of a boxed game!
This is exciting stuff and Mantic seem to have 'gotten' what gamers are after, a great deal with good choices and no hidden catches. Kings of War NEEDED a game, and hopefully this box set is an accessible way to get into fantasy wargaming.
Why not check out the new Kings of War groups and ask whatever questions you have:
Competition is badly needed in the wargaming market and it will be interesting to see if the wargaming community start to support Mantic and what they are trying to do (which is basically what wargamers have been asking for for years), what do you guys think, will you make the jump?

I honestly can’t wait for Mantic to fully develop, I’m currently planning to use their models on a fantasy gaming table I made simmilair to the one made by BoW for gamescape with WHFB 8th edition.
Though with Alessio working with Mantics on their first game, well, what can you say, BRING IT ON! 😀
Looks really cool defiantly will have to pick one up for a change of pace.
You should talk to him about bringing them to gen con so I do not have to wait for it to ship =P !!!!!
Thats awesome news guys, are you planning to review the ruleset over this weekend ?
The Games not finished but we got exclusive access to it and the designer to quiz him on the direction they are taking 🙂
I’ve got a funny taste in my mouth… what is it? Oh my words…

I now want to go out and start collecting Flames of War skellies
hell yes guys lets give gw a run for its money, i cant wait to get one so me and my little brother can unless war. HEY BEAST OF WAR ANY THOUGHTS OF A GIVE AWAY OR A COMP FOR THE MONTH OF OCT
As someone who has been collecting Mantic Models since last year, and has been fortunate enough to own everything they’ve produced upto now, I find their future plans very exciting for the hobby. The evolution of their mini’s and company has been fun to follow, and now that the big promotion has begun for their ruleset, I expect to see a lot of new people on the forums.
Well done Ronnie and the rest of the Mantic Gang, and well done to the Beasts of War boys, for creating a venue such as this site for promoting all this hobby goodness.
Good Times! Good Times!
Good Times indeed!
Again many thanks to Beasts of War for helping to promote a great and most worthy company!
Many thanks to Mantic for being such a pleasure to deal with and so much fun to follow as they progress!
My Birthday is in October… I wonder what I’ll be asking for 😛
Great news! You’ve got me very excited – especially with the notion that Mantic wants us to enjoy our hobby *our* way!
Im really excited to hear this news from the guys at Mantic. Ive followed them for awhile and have held off buying any models in anticipation of a possible ruleset. Its an exciting time for wargaming and Mantic are putting out quality minatures at really good prices! Its nice to see some competition and i can only applaud Mantics approach to wargaming!
hmm, I don’t think i’ll pick it up. I only play 40K at the moment but plan on making the jump to warhammer Fantasy in there near future as well. I love there models, there ease for me to pick up and is easy for me to get games at my local GW store.
great video still, and this intro has to be your longest yet at 55 seconds. haha
Sound really good 🙂
I look forward to looking through the rules..
But so far I still like the GW dwarfs and Elfs better (which is a good thing as I have stacks of them boxed up 😉 )
But the undead minis are GREAT…
This is great because one can play both Warhammer and Kings of War . So no one looses out and this even helps smaller model companies get in on the action !
40 quid for the rule set and 45 for the army box.
Tempted to preorder and have it land on mydoorstep on 22nd October
The ruleset also comes with 100 figures for £40!
Well worth the plunge!
Yeah I’ll go for the rule box and the undead box. With a 34 foot long room I’ll have the dwarfs at one end while a huge thin line slowly filters themselves into play.
One of the sweetest things i have heard. Cheers to mantic!
This is great news that another company is fetching out a rule set and trying to make it as easy as possible for people to get into the hobby.I hope its a major success. It would be nice to see them come up with different races as well.Something different to what other company’s are offering.
at last mantic are making a rule set 😀
Wow – that is staggeringly exciting news and what a refreshing approach and attitude from Ronnie Renton!!!!
One question – will there be an Elf boxed set?
great set, great price, great video.
Mantic are great their prices are super. Concerning what people have been saying about this forcing GW to lower prices that could well come at the cost of some of the services they offer in store, gaming tables and the like don’t come for free
but honestly I wouldn’t mind that, there are plenty of gaming clubs around at home and even a society at uni so I wouldn’t miss it I’m really excited for mantic’s future
As my nickname suggests, I’m a big 40k man.
Fantasy never did it for me.
But after watching this video, if Mantic follow through with the concepts he’s talking about, then I’ll be seriously considering getting into the fantasy genre via Kings of War.
Massive battles with enormous amounts of models, that aren’t priced at ridiculous levels?
Yes please.
Mantic Games: The AK47 of Wargaming.
Cheap, reliable and numerous…
Just a moment, let me wipe a tear of joy 🙂 A Mantic week? Awesome!
The Mantic line has become my favorite models to collect. Can’t wait to get my paws on a boxed set with the rules.
Mantic is finally making a rule book? WHAT A GLORIOUS DAY xD
not only did they got a amazing miniature range, but are making rules for it
man, I definitely have to save up some cash and the best part is, that it’s not going to cost my allowance from a whole year 😀
Mantic thank you and kkep up your great work
Brilliant!! Watch out GW, a new boy is in town 🙂
mantic rule, this should be good specially if alesio is working on it, as a sugestion mabye gav thorpe could halp out sometime hes freelance i think
OMG sooo tempting!! 😀
Anyone know if the dwarf army deal pre-order qualifies for Mantic’s freebie weekend?
Quick question, at 2:02 Ronnie says “chose from a number of armies”. Does he mean Mantic armies? or any 28mm fantasy army? Will I be able to use my Lizard Men? And if so, will they feel like lizard men, or just a generic army?
Best news i’ve heard all day. Can’t wait to see how you play. Definetly gonna give this game a try and see if I can drag my brother into it as well.
THis im definitely interested in, great minis, nice ideas with the boxs on shelves idea, and hopefully will be serious competition against GW, which will make it intresting 🙂
I think they just sold me a box… Sign me up!
What about shipping to America?
Nice One Mantic, plus any excuse to buy Hasslefree miniatures is a good one, I cant wait and i’m fairly confident that quite a few folk at my local club are looking forward to this too 🙂
Kev White is a sculpting god and Kev and Sally are really nice people 🙂
Alessio also wrote 7th Ed Fantasy, you know. Now there was a rules writer who actually knew what he was doing.
Kings of War looks to be the first real competition to GW, and I am so glad to see it happen. I cannot wait to hear more about what Alessio has created. Not to mention Ronnie’s attitude – it’s such an antithesis to GW’s paranoid, agressive, and arrogant approach that I am stunned. Joyfully so.
Mantic Games, you have my full support in everything you do!
That’s great news, well done and congratulations. 🙂
I love Ronnie’s (and mantic’s) attitude to all of this, and his involvement with the community only helps to strengthen the bonds and improve peoples opinions.
Oh, and the table looks great!
Interesting you picked up on my ‘competition’ remark.
I suppose I really should elaborate on what I meant 🙂
there are a load of amature rulesets out there and they do nothing to the market at all zilch – it could even be argured that they hurt the industry a little.
So far the vast majority of players support and rely on the GW franchise to sell their wares (including mantic) seeing a real alternative can only help competition and innovation.
And in our Market it’s badly needed, everyone knows that GW make the best product in the industry, but their sharp business practices have held back the development of an entire sector unfortunately 🙁
GW would rather be in complete control of somthing small than have to compete in a larger more vibrant Market.
It remains to be seen how effective that strategy will be on the long term now there is a shift in information consumption and buying habits towards Internet which is much more open and level in it’s playing field.
Good spot 🙂 needed clarifying!
I posted this in response to a blog post where he rightly called me out on my reference to competition http://rokknroll-alpha.blogspot.com/2010/07/mantic-mania-mayhem-matches-madness-my.html

ARRRGE! I Cant Take it anymore.. I’m Buying Mantic’s Undead army Now… Now that they are making a Rule set.. I love those miniatures.
I wish they would do any orc & goblin army, with some night goblin type models. That would be nice.
Yay free beta testing for the rules! Thats how they should be written nowadays.
I wonder why they didn’t have Elves fighting the Undead?
Anyway, for ~50€ I am getting this for sure. Eventhough I would have prefered Orcs/Orks.
I think they took their best selling ones for the box, obviously there are not too many people out there wanting the Elves. I wonder why the chose them as their first army anyway.
@clankiller79
I think that the orc/goblin will be next as the already have a references to the green skins in the background fluff and they have 2 “good” armies and only one bad,
Also great news on the rules set, can’t wait to see it!
hmm, I haven’t read the elve’s fluff but there was a story about an elf killing the most powerful human king to ever exist, that doesn’t give a very good picture the whole elven kingdom. Though when it’s humans vs. something else I tend to be biased towards the humans. Except in Dragon Age, every human seems to be an a******, except from some of the Grey Wardens. Sorry, off-topic rambling.
Oh yeah, forgot to say, guess who just forgot all about Blood Island 😀 ?
Mantic releasing big started box, GW releasing big starter box, I’m broke. Now wait a second that first one was mantic, then i’m not broke!
For the Orcy people – errrr didn’t you see the head John pointed out on the dwarf sprue …… go watch the video again 🙂
about 3:50 in ……
Some very exciting and insightful stuff there! Great news and very interested to see a sneak peak of the rules if possible, even if it’s something like an example statline or a special rule or something 😀 See if you can wrangle one out of them BoW, please 😛
Curious as to why there was no mention of a big elves box set though. I’d have thought there’d be one for them too. As an idea, they could do duel starters combining each race (so a Dwarf vs elf one, an undead vs elf one, as an example).
BIG BOX ELF
lets hope its cos they are working on getting plastic cav and dragons worked into it…and retooling the bowmen…
ps
of course someone is bound to have been upset by me dissing the bows
or maybe thats a sunday special 😉
this is probably the best news ive heard all year, first they get the guy who wrote 5thedition 40k to write the rules, and second there bringing out a full box set at incredible price… personally i love what mantic has produced so far, and really cant wait till they are fully produced….
exciting times ahead..
Hats off to ronnie. He actualy cares about what the gamers want and isnt just out to fleece his customers. Il be buying from him
There is only one word I can say , AWESOME , just plan AWESOME. I have been a gaming geek sence the early 1980s. My friends and I were looking for a mass combat rules set for all our D&D minis . Rouge Trader came out from GW and we jumped head first. Playing 40k & Fantasy from GW in those days was great , than it just got out of hand. I live in an area that is been in bad economy for more years than i can count. So when GW changed there rules every 5 years or so I would give my army away to less fortunate Kids to keep the hobby going . But GW has just kept jacking the price all these years to the point that I am having trouble with buying new stuff . So Thank you Mantic for having a heart and not being to gready. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME =)
