Dive Into Hail Caesar Epic Battles With Warlord’s Hannibal Battle Set
May 16, 2024 by brennon
Warlord Games are now taking pre-orders for their newest addition to the Epic Battles range. Hail Caesar Epic Battles goes Ancient and you can get started in their small-scale wargame with the Hannibal Battle Set featuring Romans going up against Carthaginians.
Hannibal Battle Set // Hail Caesar Epic Battles
The Hannibal Battle Set is the perfect place to start as it sets you up for a clash during the Punic Wars. Rome and Carthage are in the middle of their brutal power struggle and to that end, you get two full armies for both alongside a whole bunch of bonus miniatures, terrain and accessories to help set the scene. The set even comes with Warlord Resin figures for Hannibal Barca and Scipio Africanus to lead your armies.
Hannibal Battle Set - Romans // Hail Caesar Epic Battles
On the Roman side of things, you have Triarii, Principes, Hastati, Roman Light and Heavy Cavalry, Velites and a bunch of Commanders. If you've played Rome: Total War then you'll be very familiar with these units as they are some of the first ones that you bring to the battlefield as you seek conquest in the name of Rome.
On The Carthaginian side of things, you've got an equally impressive set of miniatures. Many of these have been drawn from the allies that Carthage were able to bring together to hopefully bring down Rome.

You get loads of the Libyans and Gallic warriors alongside Numidians and Spaniards. This set also comes with bonus Allied Troops that you can throw into the mix and perhaps fill in the gaps. All the miniatures are looking great and come in around that scale somewhere between 12mm and 15mm, 13.5mm to be accurate.

It wouldn't be a Hannibal-based set without the addition of some War Elephants. As you can see below, the set comes with eight of them so you'll be able to thunder forward and crush your enemies. Well, as long as they don't unleash the flaming pigs.

The Hannibal Battle Set also comes with a special Roman Watchtower from Sarissa Precision alongside all of the rules, dice and accessories you need to get playing the game. If you were tempted by the idea of Ancient wargaming at this scale then this seems like a perfect starting point.
Hail Caesar Epic Battles Character Sets
If you're looking to supplement this larger set with some more characters from the period then you can also get a set for the Romans and the Carthaginians. Let's start with the Romans...
Republican Roman Commanders // Hail Caesar Epic Battles
This set comes with miniatures for Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, Claudius Nero, Gaius Terentius Varro, Sempronius Longus, Publius Cornelius Scipio, Mounted Signifer, Signifer on foot, Praeco & attendants and then finally, the Servant with refreshments.
This is a solid set for those looking to add some famous faces into the mix. It could also be a good way for you to tell your own story during the Punic Wars. You could see if you could change the fortunes of all involved.
On the Carthaginian side, we have...
Carthaginian Commanders // Hail Caesar Epic Battles
Hannibal Barca, Hannibal's shield bearer, Hasdrubal Barca, Mago Barca, Hanno, son of Bomilcar, Hasdrubal Gisco, Carthaginian officer reading scroll, Mounted Standard Bearer, Standard Bearer on foot and then the Servant with fan. These are great for those seeking to set the scene and build up a fun-looking tabletop full of intricacy for onlookers. All of these miniatures are available in Warlord Resin rather than plastic like the basic miniatures for the range.
Additional Army Sets!
If you're someone looking to expand these armies already or perhaps just snap up epic-scale armies for whatever project you have in mind, you can also get separate sets as you can see below...
Republican Roman Division // Hail Caesar Epic Battles
Carthaginian Division // Hail Caesar Epic Battles
Allied Troops Division // Hail Caesar Epic Battles
All of these sets feature the miniatures from the Hannibal Battle Set but without the addition of some of the special miniatures and such. They are good for snapping up a bunch of extra miniatures to bulk out your ranks.
Last but not least, you can also get your hands on a set of bonus War Elephants. When in Rome, right?
Carthaginian War Elephants // Hail Caesar Epic Battles
There are bonus bundles and more for you to check out over on the Warlord Games webstore so go and dive in if you like the look of what you've seen here. I must admit, of all of the Epic Battles ranges so far, this one is looking the most appealing. This range gives people a good chance to dive in and build up those Ancient armies they've always wanted.
Will you be getting stuck in?

Nice looking sets I’m sure will do very well….wonder what’s next? 1066? Marlborough?
Bit of a problem with the Roman Army sets. As far as I can remember the republican army in this era had the Triarii (the veterans with the spears) usually being at half the strength of either the Hastati or Principes in the units (if you are using the “checkerboard” formation they used). SOOOOO, as the Roman army set gives you 4 units each of Hastati and Principes, then you should be fielding just 2 units of Triarii (and not 4 as provided). This is going to give your Roman army a massive boost in numbers for it’s most elite… Read more »
I had the same thought when I saw the triarii being overrepresented. Stuff like that frustrates me because they could do it right but choose not too. I find this very tempting but I’ll likely pass too for the same reasons.
Ignore that 13.5mm thing. They’re 15mm. They might technically be 13.5mm but they’re Warlord Chonky so they are 15mm. Not sure how getting free extra guys on a base is a bad thing, it’s not like your Romans will ever be on the same table as your Union.
The problem now though is that most recently sculpted 15’s are now 18’s
Certainly that’s the case with AB Naps, but almost all my Ancients are from Xystron (so haven’t really suffered as much from any scale creep), But they definitely wouldn’t mix in with the Warlord Epic ranges if fielded on the table side by side 🙁
OR, Warlord could have made the more consumer friendly decision and done the Epic range in 15mm (or even 10mm). Make no mistake the “13.5mm” decision was made so that these ranges WOULDN’T mix in with any other 15mm ranges. It would have been so easy for them to go with 15mm and made everyone happy, plus you would have to go around buying whole extra sprues to do headswaps for troop types they don’t do (instead you could you know…..just buy them).
You can still use the army lists from first edition as far as I know (pretty sure there free as well now) so it would depend on what your allowed to take according to those if you just flint want to fire down everything g you gave on the table
I kind of feel tempted, but the comments Gerry made about how big and unwieldy units will be in Hail Caesar are making my wallet happy.
I’m sure there are plenty of rules out there that would cover the troops in this range, but are any of those (a) newbie friendly and (b) in print ?
otoh … I may already have a set of rules (ONUS! Traianus), which uses cardboard cards for units and I’ve been thinking of making them more 3D.
