I have one of these. I have been basing By Fire and Sword miniatures with it. I use a mix of 1mm, 2mm and 4mm grass at the same time and then add flowers afterward. Very happy with the results.

Slight problem though, the MK I that you are reviewing has all sold out and I am now on to the MK III which is a lot better. The MK III has new electronics which means you cannot damage it if using the higher 12v by accident. It also has twice as large a working area which is now a flat plate that works better at picking up than the dish. It now comes with more grass than shown.
A slight error in your review. The flat metal plate was for placing over the top of the dish to make a flat working area that you put your grass onto. But the way you used it is also good as the metal plate behind figures greatly helps with the pickup rate. The MK III does not come with the metal plate as it is built into the box now.

A interesting gadget – makes flocking more easier – however, I’m guessing it only works on static grass?
Marky, I’m not sure what else would you expect it to work on? It works on picking up natural hair or animal fur in the same way. It also picks up small sand particles! If you mean model scatter materials then it would depend on what those materials are made from, better to use static grass!

How close do you have to get, to work properly? Lets say you have something bigger on the base and cannot get close.
I have been basing 15mm miniatures. The cavalry I have had to base before gluing the riders to the horses or else it becomes quite difficult to use, but basing single figures is pretty easy as you can hold the miniature below the edge of the metal plate with the base that you are flocking just above it.
It does have its limitations with higher models, I would say no more than 3 inches between the top of a model and the base to be grassed. But you can always make any size grass tufts using silicone paper and peel off and stick it on the base.
Put it this way, when I put the first batch of miniatures based this way in front of the guy I painted them for his comments included the words ‘absolutely’ and ‘beautiful’ and he was talking about the bases rather than the miniatures…
Would it work to put the static grass in a sort of (metal) pepper caster, attach the cable and place the mini on the plate? So I could go around or underneath the piece.
It states on the website that you can do exactly this, but with a sieve (tea strainer maybe?). I haven’t tried it myself though.
Yes you can use it like all the other shaker type static grass applicators. Just attach the blue cable crocodile clip to a standard metal sieve, place your mini on the plate, grass in sieve and shake it to drop onto the mini.

Looks like a tool worth your money. Unfortunately I see this a few weeks to late, just grassed like 50 FoW:V bases. But I keep it in mind for the next army project.

All metals conduct electricity Warren, it’s a fundamental property of metals. 🙂
Of course any figure you’re using this device on will likely have an insulating layer of paint on, Would not be surprised if the static charge is sufficient to jump through a micron thick layer of paint though.
Wow Morat, never had that happen to me yet and I’ve probably based a good couple thousand 15mm figures with this so far.
I’ve shipped out all the Flockbox’s that were bought last night/today before 3pm and upgraded all the UK ones to 1st class so you get to play with them for the weekend :o)
You are of course correct about the metals _ I had a braid fart and couldn’t stop thinking Lead was a poor conductor – but its an tin alloy now (and tin has been used as a replacement for copper in Telecoms etc)

Indeed. You mix tin with Niobium to make such wire.
Although some comms equipment is going down the fibre route, which is quicker but you need FO repeaters in order to preserve the signal strength as they cant carry a current. 🙂 At last! My radar technician qualification has provided me with knowledge I can use in civi street. Hehe. Doh.

That’s an amazing flocking box one thing I would add is an inch/ inch half disk with a pin for the crocodile clip then you can blue tack the figure bases to it @warzan
