We Interview Legacy Miniatures about Confrontation
July 12, 2011 by elromanozo
BoW have engaged painting maestro and ace newshound, Romain to interview Vincent from Legacy Miniatures about the relaunch of the Confrontation miniatures range.
Romain: Hi Vincent, first off, I have to address a particular problem that I often hear. Many people don’t like to buy a miniature unless they have it in hand… Even though the Rackham range is well known, and you seem insistent on quality, will we find your range in bricks and mortar stores?
Vincent: It's a little chaotic at the moment, As we finish cataloguing everything in the coming months we'll have a clearer picture and inform the fans.
Romain: Are you now in possession of all the moulds for all of the range, or the masters?
Vincent: We have the masters, we've received quite a lot of masters and are sorting through them now, but I estimate that the collection is at least about 85% complete.
Romain: That question points to this one: will you be making new moulds, and will you be making resin or metal?
Vincent: We didn't get any of the moulds, so it's quite an expensive process to get moulds made from the masters we did receive. For the immediate future, the focus is making the models in high quality resin.
Romain: Do you have any plans to revive the game (Confrontation 3 or any other edition, and what about Cadwallon, the role playing game ?), if enough people ask for it?
Vincent: We aren't excluding anything right now, obviously a lot depends on how complete all the existing assets are, as well as the continued interest from the fans to buy the older models.
Romain: Since you plan on making it a collector’s range, at least for now, will you be including cards for those who still play the game ? Could the cards be sold separately?
Vincent: Yes, we'll be including unit cards for the models; some of them may not make it in time for Gencon but we'll mail them out to anyone who purchases the Hydra and Flesh Golems once the cards are done. From the 3rd wave onwards they should be in the boxes by default.
Romain: Do you plan to revive the whole range, and all collections? There was a short-lived resin range, for collectors… will you revive that as well?
Vincent: As I've said, we'll have to see how complete everything is and the level of interest. We’re encouraged by the level of positive reaction though so we're cautiously optimistic.
Romain: Will you be using the same art/painters to keep in with the style?
Vincent: Yes, we have on board some of the original artists and painters from Rackham, and so you should see continuity in the 3.5 product.
Romain: Will you be reviving the Rackham paint range at some point?
Vincent: This is unlikely.
Romain: Will you be making new miniatures, besides the unreleased ones we haven’t seen before?
Vincent: A decision on this has not yet been taken, again depending on the level of interest in the old range.
Romain: Are you in contact with the very talented sculptors of the Rackham range?
Vincent: Yes, we are on good terms with the ex-studio sculptors; obviously time has moved on so some of them have taken other work.
Romain: As GW has just brought out Storm of Magic, and as Warmachine prepares more huge miniatures, will you be releasing the big beasties such as the Tarrascus or the Cynwall dragons?
Vincent: Well the first two releases are the Flesh Golem and Hydra, so I guess the answer has to be yes.
Romain: Will you be releasing the busts and other collector’s pieces, such as the Izotop goblin bust?
Vincent: It's a possibility.
Romain: Will you be releasing the accessories and small scenery?
Vincent: This will have to happen later rather than sooner.
Romain: What will you be releasing first, and how often will you be releasing?
Vincent: We're planning to make 4 releases a month, a mix of larger pieces, unreleased models and older classics.
Romain: Finally, what will be the price of your miniatures? Are they going to be substantially more expensive than before, now that it’s a collector’s range?
Vincent: They should not be very different from industry norms, although since the runs are much lower there may be some variation for the larger models, which are extremely expensive to tool and produce, due to the number of fitting pieces.
So there you go guys, some of the information about the upcoming re-release of Confrontation.
If there's anything else you want to ask, why not drop a comment below and we'll get on to Vincent and see if he can give you any more info.

I’d like to say a big thanks to BOW and Romain for posing the questions and Vincent for taking the time to answer them. It must be a crazy busy time for him. I’m very excited by this and hope very much that they will be persuaded to re-release Confrontation 3(.5) again. I know a bunch of gamers who’d love to see this happen. On the other hand, I know of nobody who would be even slightly interested in seeing Age of Ragnarok come back. If Vincent is kind enough to put cards in, it’d be good to see them… Read more »
Heres a question 🙂 did you also get the AT-43 IP, and if so will you be releasing any of those miniatures as well?
There are certainly a few old confrontation models I would like to get my hands on. If they make the titan dragon they need to announce it several months before the release to give us all time to start saving up, that thing is one of the masterpieces of the industry and I know they will sell quite a few regardless of cost.
Ah yes, Romain’s subtle voice breaks down all the industry’s well kept secrets.
Definitly will buy some of these modells, no matter the cost…
Wait…..so are the prepainted or not?
I think not.
Nice interview. I must say I would like to give the game a try.
I have to admit I have never worked with resin before. But with these models I am more than willing to work with the stuff.
I won’t care for cost but hopefully they will keep them about the same or price them lower then what they were origonally priced.
Romain, Thank you for doing this interview. With Gen Con less then a month alway, do they know what those two will be priced at? Some body hang the person who said prepainted plastic!
I asked that very question in the end… You have all the info we have about that !
BoW Romain
I want this game. If they start reselling the game again I’m all in. I will buy like a nutcase!
No news on rules reprints or updates?
@gauthic, see question number 4 of the interview…

@elromanozo hmmmm thanks
an interesting, if not cryptic response…. since they’re “not excluding anything at this point” I assume they have rights to the rules as well as the minis (which was previously claimed, but nothing has been clarified about the rules)
Reading between the lines here, I suspect that they’re not being intentionally cryptic. Rackham made over 1,000 models, and if they’ve been given the masters then they’re probably in a jumbled pile of 800+ models to sort through. That’s going to take some time, plus when they talk about other assets I’d suspect that was artwork and files on disk and physically; so before they can realistically decide on a plan they’ve got to sort that too. Masters may be good to mould immediately, but may have also been damaged and need repair, and ranges may be more or less… Read more »
They own the Confrontation IP. That is all we know for now. I think that entitles them to release rules if they so choose, but I could be wrong. I believe that if there is a market (i.e. if enough people buy the minis and want the game), they could release rules for Confrontation and/or make new models… But, as Vincent has clearly stated, they’re keeping their options open for now… And wisely so. There is no answer yet to questions like “will they release C3 rules”, because not even they can tell what tomorrow will be made of… However,… Read more »
Thanks again Romain. Regarding IP, licenses for developing bits of it are usually very specific. So, for example, they might have the rights to produce the models, but not the game; to do models and tabletop games, but not board games; and so on. There are a myriad possibilities, and I’m sure we’ll find out in due course. As you said though, the fact that they’re doing cards with the models is a very good sign.
Thanks for this, I am very excited to hear all this news and can’t wait to see what they have in store for us.
Great news indeed. Is the new company going to be Euro based or US? I loved the look of some of the stuff Rackham put out but availability for me was an issue as I like to see the item on purchase mainly. So my collection was added to at shows mainly making it very hit and miss. I certainly will be saving my pennies to buy some of the stuff to support this venture. 🙂
Awesome interview, thank you! I have to admit (beat me if you must) for almost 20 years now I have been a die hard GW person (even worked for the company), but in the past 5-6 years I have branched out considerably and found the Rackham Mini’s to be AMAZING! Imagine my dismay to find the company had gone under by the time I discovered them (remember under the GW rock for a long time…still am). I don’t know much about the actual gaming, though I’ve heard great things. I can not WAIT to get my hands on the miniatures… Read more »
I don’t know much about Rackham but I know I loved their Chthonian Larva 1 figure, one of the best lovecraftian miniatures out there – so if that gets released and in resin, ill buy a whole load of them.
I was an avid Dogs of War player as the club leader of the confrontation night at the local hobby store was a manager of a printing house and made great compact rules and campaign guides. It was the best fun I EVER had playing a war game. And when I say EVER I mean it! It was a sad day when Rackham did the pre paints and a new game system. I never thought this day would come. I did loose faith that the good old days would come back. In some ways this can’t bring the “old days”… Read more »
I hope they do a longer run in metal with pdf for the various versions of confrontation. I could do with a few figs but dont want to find run sold out before i get cash together. I mostly have the ppp range which are ok for price i got them at- Rackham made a mistake to go from lovely metal to ppp only, ho hum. Wish this venture luck
Could you ask if they plan to release the later range, made in the dreaded plastic in resin as well? I have a large collection of Wolfen but could not bring my self to buy the pre-painted plastic and the newer models were good in game terms. Also, will they re-release the limited edition models again? Ash’an Tyr for example? Although this would kill the current high value of limited editions it would allow a lot of others access to some fantastic miniatures? Also there was a few release in France only or shows that you just couldn’t get hold… Read more »
