Turanga the Shuuro Expansion
January 25, 2013 by dignity
Warren and Alessio sit down to look at Turanga, the first expansion for Shuuro. In the box are two more sets of chess pieces, enough to turn the two player Shuuro in to a four player game! That’s even more fun than just you vs. your friend!

The water faction can’t go through the lakes… really.
Surely you should have other faction specific terrain, other than the gates…
May I suggest something akin to the Space Hulk system? So, roll so many dice, and so many 6’s or 5+’s will kill the piece.
And these games are so on my Christmas list!
I so wish I had friends that played chess. I would love to get this game. But alas I have no one to play with. 🙁
I think this version looks even better. Not sure about the combat system, although its interesting could be possibly a bit complicated and slow things down a lot. Cool game
i think i may have just found my uncles christmas present =)
I’m not sure I’d use the combat system if it were as complicated as Mr. Cavatore explained. It would indeed slow things down considerably. Especially with four players. Sheer luck could ruin the best strategy in mere moments… How about making new types of pieces ? There’s certainly a great deal of chess variants out there to get inspiration from, to say nothing of “Knightmare Chess”, published by SJ Games a while ago, that old chestnut of a game that some people might know… It added cards that each player could play in turn, moving pieces in an unusual way,… Read more »
I went on to facebook… this vid is from late July, and! the facebook page has been open since January 2009. That means this isn’t a a bran new game! Why did you hold back? Is this a Christmas marketing ploy??
Ah who cares looks exciting anyway.
Oh yes, the game has been out since 2008 according to Boardgamegeek, but I’ve only heard about it here… It has, sadly, completely avoided the french market, and is unavailable at any physical shop I know of in France. Most aren’t even able to order it.
Found this! Four player chess game play by play example game 4-Way Chess by Taurus Games.

I like how Turanga has refined this idea, and expanded on it.
Hi, we started selling Shuuro in late 2008. But as I’m doing it with my own little company (River Horse), with no marketing budget, it has to rely on word of mouth, so it can only be a slow starter. Said that, we finished the first printrun and we just got the second print of Shuuro and the first of Turanga!
In many countries, our stuff is difficult to find, I know. I suppose it depends on how many people ask about it to their local game store… 😉
I never hesitate to ask ! I’ll order mine from Maelstrom, though.
Regarding the 4-way chess, it came from a game I had when I was a teen-ager, called Escher – a 4-way round chessboard inspired to the works of the famous artist:

He was fascinated with chess and chessboards too… try typing ‘escher chess’ into google and then go to Images!
Later, the idea for Turanga come to me while reading about Chaturanga (the ‘ancestor’ of chess) and its variant Chaturaji as I was designing Shuuro.

it’s pretty lame how fire and water are allied rather than water and earth, which together form darkness and air and fire, which together form light
not according to Plato!
😉
combat system: why not try using only one dice per side and add +1, +2 etc rather than using extra dice. this would reduce randomness considerably as well as reducing “casualties” caused by pieces being smacked on the head by all those dice!
ps. I picked up shuuro recently and I love it, I finally have a portable war game that I can take to the pub!
another thought, sticking with the five element theme, you could use only one D12 using the modifiers and create defensive values for each piece, for example pawn=2, knight/bishop=4, rook=6, queen=8 and support=+1. this system would emphasise much more on careful placement of troops, for example a well defended queen will be hard as nails, but she might not wish to move out of position as she would be fair game to even a pawn on a 7+ (6+ if you include a +1 attacking bonus) the four kingdoms will represent each of the elements, while the dice(or fifth element) will… Read more »
