Shuuro, Chess with a Twist!
December 20, 2012 by dignity
Warren and Alessio Cavatore sit down for a chat about his new game, Shuuro and to tell the truth it's a great game taking the form of the classic chess set and then going one step farther in to the realms of wargaming but in general it's just something fun that you and your friends can sit down to and have fun with when 40k and all the other war games are just getting boring.
Hope you guys enjoy the chat and here are some links to let you all get your hands on it:

This is a definite purchase for me. Looks amazing.
It looks riveting ! I hope it’ll be out for christmas.
Haha haa haha that piont at 13.30 when Alessio says always good for battle sounds so weird.
I know what I’m getting for Christmas!
A new point of view for chess… I like it!
When will it be distributed in Europe, specifically in France ?
This game has so much potential for a simple sit down and play type game to play with none wargaming friends.
Interesting game, would probably get if I was more into board games.
This is excellent for the gaming community exactly because its abstract. Even those who guffaw at wargaming nerddom might take interest in Shurro when they find no evidence of hexes or static grass. Shurro looks like a great entry into wargaming for the proudly “too cool.”
Great meta game! Cavatorre’s niche is “out of simplicity, depth.” This one looks like another home run. I love it!
I want one! Is it already in the US?
Hi guys, thanks for the positive comments!
I particularly love the ‘out of simplicity, depth’ I wish I thought of that one! 🙂
To answer some of your questions, the game is available through Warlord Games and Maelstrom Games.
Also, in the US, Ancientchess.com should soon have it, distributed in North America by Lion Rampant.
In Italy or France, try Wild Boar edizioni. A Torino: Centro Gioco Educativo.
Games’n’us in Holland, Fantasy-shop in Greece, B2F in Japan, Puolenkuun Pelit in Finland…
ehm… can’t remember any more…
Wow ! thanks !
Sweet, I really love these type of boardgames, I am also very interested in the terrain type (the swamps and lakes ect…) rules. I will definetly check this out!
This looks very interesting. very simple. i like it.
Also, at 16.20 – i lost the game, thanks Alessio…
ooo I like the look of this! I love chess but can never find anyone to play against. That’s not because I’m particularly good, but because my friends (wife included) say they don’t understand it enough and can’t be bothered to learn it properly. This looks like a fun twist on it and the mini game looks awsome to get them interested. One for the old Christmas list and if I don’t get it, I’ll buy it in the new year!
It looks very good to me – I love chess and I see this as an extra dimension to it, but not a replacement to either chess nor wargaming. But that’s good. I don’t want a game to replace them, but it does complement them – less chessular, but simpler than wargaming. A very nice middle ground, so well done Alessio. One thing though: I’m curious as to why you avoided the current chess “points” system (which is something like one point per pawn, 3 per knight/bishop, about 4 per rook and something like 7 or 8 per queen). Also,… Read more »
Looks interesting, I might give it a try!
I know what I’m getting for Christmas!
Yes, I was watching the video and realised that Warren could have simply taken my knight with his pawn, but didn’t. To our defence, we were talking though the game and playing with the clock at the same time… but still we both look a bit thick!!! 🙁
The points values are based on the traditional chess exchange theory, but adapted in proportion to the larger board of Shuuro… and my gut feeling!
your pawn could of taken his knight!! haha
This looks awesome, Im going to get a set and take it to my local club, im sure they’ll love it too.
all sounds very interesting
This looks it could be a really good gateway wargame. It’s something I can use to get my non-gaming friends into games. Providing you know how to play Chess the rules are incredibly simple to explain, I can really see this being pulled out and people instantly knowing how to play and getting into the army building side of things. Couple of months down the line and it’s “Hey, you know that Chess thing we play? Well, I’ve got this game called Blood Bowl that…” It’s a great tool for any wargamer with friends that look down on their hobby… Read more »
I’m getting this as soon as my post Mithrasmas pay comes in, been thinking about it for ages. Cheapest place to buy this is at Warlord Games at the minute!
I was a bit sceptical when I started the video, but I got intrigued pretty quickly. Looks like a really cool little game.
Yeah, rly worth to have look at it 😉
I got a copy and it is awesome! I play with my missus who will not play me at chess as I always tank her at it. in this game she has al least won 30% of the time and usually kicks my ass if I take a handicap and I have since stopped having to do so. for me, the game has made me more interested in board games, which I never used to play, while my missus is getting curious about the wargames that I play (she used to call me a geek) please can we have more… Read more »
a group would be nice too, it would be good to see what games we like to play as opposed to the ones avid board game fanatics like.
as yet I havent found any reviews etc on shuuro on any of the board game forums, even though most strategy games seem to be compared directly with chess. different people like different things I guess!
10x better than standard chess
