Fantasy Flight’s X-Wing Ships Get Bigger & Bigger!
August 20, 2013 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games have shown off some of their bigger additions to the X-Wing game at Gen Con over the weekend and they are some rather massive additions to the Rebel fleet.
Has you can see by the scale these are much bigger than the standard X-Wing, and rightly so! Above we have one of the massive Rebel transport vessels and next to it a Corellian Corvette (according to Google!).
I would imagine that the transport itself will be more use as an objective or part of a scenario while the massive Corvette could actually handle itself in a fight.
It's certainly good to see some big ships and could we actually see a Star Destroyer?
What do you think?

Capital ships like Star Destroyer and Calmari Cruiser might be too big for this game unless they increase size of game board so unless that happens I can’t see those becoming part of game.
Well, probably not a star destroyer. Given that they are 1.6km in length. That would make it almost 19feet (5.76m) long at the same scale. Assuming i’ve done my maths right 🙂
BUT HOW AWESOME WOULD THAT BE! 😉
…ahem, but yes that is rather big lol.
BoW Ben
Yup, it would be fantastic. I could maybe fit one in my living room on a diagonal, or have the prow sticking out the open window! As standard they carry 72 TIE fighters/interceptors/bombers. Throw in a few Lambda shuttles and Slave-1 and that would be an amazing looking army. Just need a warehouse to play in.
They look very cool though. Think i’ll have to get a corvette. I wonder what ships the Imperials will get since these are both Rebel.
the imperial equivalent to the corvette would be a tartan patrol cruiser i believe but closest to the transport i can think of is the lambda which is already out so…. no clue there @bloodhunter any ideas?
tartan is the only thing that comes to mind with me too, may have to get empire at war out again and have a look at the imperial equivalents.
Since they seem to have shrunk the Corvette a little(30 to 40% i think) if they continued that, for the Imperials they could maybe do a Carrack class light cruiser. Compared to the Corellian Corvette the Carrack is almost twice as big or there is the Lancer and Strike class cruisers but those are even bigger. Even tho they are big they would be alot more doable than a Star Destroyer. Of a smaller size The Imperials also have Gunboats, the Ye-4 I think would be very doable or the Xg-1 Starwing. I really want to see what they come… Read more »
Watched a game of X-Wing this weekend.
Looked great fun but not sure I want to invest the cash.
These ships look really cool and would love to see how they work on the table.
Anyway I may wait for Star Trek Attack Wing from Whizkids.
The models don’t look quite as well presented by all accounts but I think I would be able to get more out of the game.
Also it uses the same mechanics as X-Wing. One day we may get to see who really is better, Star Wars or Star Trek!! lol
@Chibi: On the tabletop with wil wheaton recently did a little battle report on this, as well, Miniwargaming has at least one video up featuring tie fighters and the Millenium falcon. As for a star destroyer, it would be more likely to have one -as the table-!
Yeah I saw that thanks.
I was wondering what these big chaps would be like. Partly due to the size relative to the table as others have said
as i said in the forum about this, i think they’re going too big now. on a 4×4 board these things would be unwieldy and getting in the way of all the other ships.
i’ll still get them, i just don’t think they’ll work.
agree they’re a bit big but the vid on that forum suggests changes are coming to accomadate this… will be interesting to see
FFG also announced plans to create new styles of play, including a campaign system. That’s where I think these larger ships will come into play. They’ve already stated that they won’t be allowing these ships in tournaments (which use a 3’x3′ table and not the oft-cited 4’x4′). I’m personally really excited about a campaign mode. Imagine the scenarios you could create with the rebels trying to outrun the imperial fleet always hot on their heels (like at the beginning of Empire). Or a string of scenarios starting with the rebels escorting gathered intelligence. If they succeed the next scenario is… Read more »
*sigh* “there” not “their”.
fair enough. i didn’t realize it was supposed to be 3×3 tables though, where did 4×4 come from?
4×4 is pretty standard for a lot of other games. I think gamers sometimes just fall into habits.
Yeah, they’ll be good fun for a demo game at a Convention or a big mutli-player battle at a gaming store but how how often are you likely to break them out for ordinary games with your friends? It would be like someone who constantly tries to turn up at casual 40k games with their Forgeworld titan.
And yet Forgeworld still sells Titans. The thing about any wargame that develops a large audience with varied tastes is that not every product will be perfect for every player. I think these are going to sell well. I think players interested in campaigns (ME! ME!) will find uses for large ships (many already have as evidenced by the player-created scenarios, models and cardstock ships that are scattered throughout the BGG forums). But this will definitely not effect the people who tend to only play 100pt battles using tournament rules. I don’t think this particular product is aimed at them.… Read more »
But not in the same numbers as GW sells Land Raiders. The FW titans are expensive luxury items which i think is the role these capital ships will have in x-wing. My concern would be that FFG are going to drag the focus of the game away from the fighters.
Well, they’ve already explicitly stated these aren’t for tournaments, and they’re running tournaments pretty regularly every year so I don’t think there’s much to worry about on that front. I would expect them to continue supporting that activity with product releases as long as they continue to encourage that activity at their own events. If they suddenly stop running tourneys, then maybe the focus of the game is shifting. Until then, I think we’re fine. I’m happy to see the game expanding in scope, supporting multiple forms of play. It means FFG is committed to the line for more than… Read more »
ON BGG there’s a scenario and corvette ship plans to print out – they work, they work really well.
If they maintain the detail the models will be cool but I doubt they will maintain the scale… it is hard to tell what’s going on with those two ships but a GR75 medium transport is supposed to be around 90m in length, at 1/270 scale that means .333m or 33.3cm, about 13inches for my fellow Americans who have been left out of the metric system for far too long. Looking at the Corvette (CEC CR90 corvette or Corellian as it is more commonly known) it comes in at 150m… up to scale that beast should be .555m long, 21.9… Read more »
I have a feeling that games are going to get bigger and more awesome then ever before. With them having the rights to Star Wars there is just so much they can do… If they make a Fleet Battle game, that would be so much fun! Well I am hoping, the models would be top notch at least.
Ok, so I won’t be getting “at least three of everything” anymore. They definitely look out of scale in the picture, too, which is a bit of a bummer. Why all the jibba jabba about “oh, we had access ot the archives and painstakingly made everything to perfect scale” if you’re just throwing it out the window?
There’s been some debate about the scale in the forums (and elsewhere). It’s entirely possible that these are to scale. In particular, people are saying the official canon length of the blockade runner (the cruiser) lines up pretty closely with the X-Wing that’s next to it.
This would imply, however, that the movies made these big ships much smaller than we think they are. The transport, in particular, seems like a big plot hole in the middle of Empire (they evacuated the rebel base using only three of these?).
It’s my understanding the base had something like space for 30 transports and multiple fighter squadrons – wouldn’t be too exciting to show all of them trying to escape, after all. On screen dialog suggests a minimum reference to 4 to my memory: the first transport is away. I don’t think we can protect 2 at a time, and the need to get the Princess on the “last” transport. I would assume evacuations were continuing even when not shown on screen, as well as some fighter engagements when the General ordered the launch of all patrols. Just about every “official”… Read more »
“Just about every “official” source I can find out there lists these ships at 90 and 150m in size. Id have a hard time with the boarding action aboard the Tantive IV if it was as small as depicted with this model considering a large chunk of it is engine, just side by side with the Falcon it would have to be Tardisian.”
Well it works with Rhinos and SMs 😛
As usual, these discussions make me want to look up stuff. For those wanting to do the same, here’s a starting point:
Starwars.com (not wookieepedia) Lists the Tantive IV at “126.68 meters long.” It also calls it an “Alderaan Cruiser.” That same page links to wookieepedia which lists it as 150m.

I’m probably going to dig out my Chronicles book next…*insert Daffy Duck crazy woohoo woohoo sounds here*
The transport and blockade runner look great. I think Star Destroyers are out of the equation simply on grounds of being too big – and too powerful.
Ditto on the Death Star 🙂
Here is how I’d imagine you could use these large ships while keeping everything semi to scale. First you would need two boards, one for the large ships and one for your normal ships (x-wing, tie fighter). On the large ship board you would have a grid setup to indicate areas of space where smaller battles are taking place. Then you would have those smaller battles on your small ship board (both boards can be 3×3). They wouldn’t need to be huge battles. It could just be a tie-bomber making and run against two x-wings and if he makes it… Read more »
sounds like a cool idea but it seems the scale fits mate so it’s not really needed
The big ships don’t need to be to scale to the fighters. Just as long as they are to scale to each other. I see them being used as slow moving or fixed emplacements with different fire arks and shield levels on different facings. With swarms of fighters zooming all around them.
That is pretty move how I saw it panning out, or having fighter escorts to get the bombers through.
That would be really cool imho
These caused a bit of a stir at my local club. No one is playing X wing yet so I’m hopeful this may kick things off.
meh, scale is off…
Fanatsy Flight Games is the Games Workshop in the Boardgame Universe. No wonder they mate regularly…
I can’t wait to see the imperial side. And I hope Disney lets them license the first three movies and the entire expanded universe. Imperial vs Rebel is going to become stale pretty quick. Droids, Naboo, Sith, Republic, Chiss, Mandalore; the options are endless!
