Star Wars: X-Wing 2.0 Announced By Fantasy Flight Games [Updated]
May 1, 2018 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games has announced the coming of Star Wars: X-Wing 2.0.
The above teaser trailer shows off the new box and there also appears to be a Squad Builder App being thrown into the mix as well.
"The X-Wing Second Edition Core Set includes three fully assembled and beautifully painted ships, as well as all the cards, movement tools, tokens, and dice that players need to get flying.
A whole wave of expansions will be released simultaneously, giving players plenty of options to create and customize their X-Wing Second Edition experience. Conversion Kits for the Galactic Empire, Rebel Alliance, and Scum and Villainy for veteran players to bring their full collection of first-edition ships into the new edition."
Here are some of the core things dropped as part of the update from Fantasy Flight Games...
- With X-Wing Second Edition, gameplay has been refined across the board, implementing minor tweaks and changes to improve the game’s flow, clean up interactions, and refocus the game on the physical act of flying starships. For more information about the gameplay tweaks implemented in X-Wing Second Edition, click here to read our FAQ!
- The Force is a crucial part of the Star Wars galaxy that has historically played a smaller role in the game of X-Wing. With the release of X-Wing Second Edition, we have the chance to implement the Force as an important part of the game, affecting how you fly your ships and the choices that you make in the heat of battle. For more information about the Force and how it plays out in your games of X-Wing, just keep reading!
- Faction identities have been strengthened in X-Wing Second Edition, giving each faction more unique tactics and strategies. Flying a squadron of Scum and Villainy starships should feel very different from flying an Imperial squadron, and with the game’s second edition, those differences are more present than ever before. What’s more, the First Order and Resistance have been reformed into their own distinct factions, separate from the Rebel Alliance and Galactic Empire, with their own themes, strengths, and weaknesses.
- An official X-Wing squad builder app/website will be implemented, bringing a new level of dynamic play to Organized Play and casual games alike. This X-Wing squad builder gives players an easy way to assemble their squadrons and manage their collection, and it also allows the Organized Play team to explore dozens of new possibilities with alternate formats for the game. The point cost of ships and upgrades and the upgrade slots available to ships can be adjusted for the course of a single event, a tournament series, or an entire season of the game. Ultimately, the X-Wing squad builder app creates dynamic and constantly evolving Organized Play unlike anything that was possible before. For more information about the X-Wing squad builder app, read on.
If you're interested in the gameplay and what has changed, Team Covenant put together a game of 2.0 for you to watch.
Check it out and see if you can spot what's been tweaked and worked out in the new edition.
As mentioned above there are also going to be conversion kits for the various factions as well as some new ship releases to get you started in 2nd Edition.
Conversion Kits
Below you can see the conversion kits and first ship releases for the Rebel Alliance...
...the Galactic Empire
...and finally, Scum & Villainy.
The Conversion Kits allow you to bring over all of the various ships from the 1st Edition of the game and make them playable in this new outing. I actually like the new style they've gone for with the painting for the various ships too, it's neat!
If you want to find out more about what's included with each of these new expansions you can head on over to the FFG website and read more.
What do you think of the news?
"No doubt this will be a tightening of the mechanics!"

Moving the point costs off the cards and onto the app is a good idea because it makes it easier for FFG to adjust them on the fly without needing to errata the card itself.
However.. man. I’m conflicted. That’s a lot of useless cardboard I suddenly have in my folders..
Nothing stopping you still playing 1st ed – some Warhammer players still play 3rd ed Fantasy, so 1st ed X-Wing shouldn’t be a problem so long as your opponents agree to it. 😉
That’s true about the points cost, and for that reason i think it’s a good idea. On the other hand, as someone who doesn’t own but has played the first edition, and whose interest was peeked by the idea of second edition, and who doesn’t have an up to date phone that can use apps, and who plays these game in order not ot be on a computer, it has soured the news somewhat. Still, i’ll try out the app on my PC and see.
Sleeve the cards, put a little 1/4″ sticker on it with the current point cost.
Yeah, no thanks. I’m good with what I have. 🙂
I wish they would bring in to the game some of the craft/vehicles from episodes I, II and III before bringing out a second edition.
Sure, but as cool as little Star Wars space ships are, the strength and success of X-Wing does not come from the casual games being played by people who love it just because it is Star Wars, and neither does a very large portion of it’s player base. A bit like Corvus Belli’s ITS system, a really well run and well supported organised play system becomes a double edged sword, often being seen as the only way to play. Hell, even I have entered FFG supported events because of the accessibility of the game and I find the competitive nature… Read more »
I really hope they can have more Clone Wars Fighters. They can add two new factions AND a bunch of neat Ships to buy! Specially the Eta 2s.
Well judging early reactions ‘It’s as if a million soul went meh at once’. Could be alright, but as a casual player seems unnecessary
More importantly where was the damn Legion news
Yeah I was expecting news for all of their Star Wars products during the Hyperspace Report. However since today is only the first day of the championships I wonder if we will get five more product updates over the coming days.
I hope so, would be a great shame if after advertising it as news for all systems they just did x-wing 2nd edition. Particularly as Legion had a good start but has slowed, and stock is yet again a problem.
From the noise at present they might also want the distraction, I think the upgrade cost has made a lot ask questions understandably so as if you have ships for the 5 factions that looking like £185 without the new box game.
Yeah, FFG cant keep their own products in stock? No surprise there. Maybe they keep doing it because the business model works for them but you would have thought they would at least have made an exception for Legion as The Next Big Thing.
Can you imagine how much internet rage there will be when this happens with the Conversion packs? October 1st, all Imperial packs sold out, reprint due Q1 2019..
This really makes me happy that I didn’t get into X-Wing miniatures game because if I had I wouldn’t be happy that all cards are now pretty much useless.
Same could be applied to any game after it gets an update/new version.
Besides … it’s not as if anyone is forcing you to update.
That part is going to be tricky once the app-enabled version gets updated …
I think for me this is really where the FFG model falls down a bit. I do like games that give you the rules with the models rather than giving you rules in a separate book, however that makes up-issuing a game far more problematic
well this is big news and right on the heels of the STAR WARS LCG coming to a close.
sounds like they’ve decided to do a bit of house keeping all round. wonder if they’ll be brave enough to take this opportunity to move Imperial assault to Legions scale?
in fairness its been six years, which is a good run for a first edition. by their own admission they’ve learnt a lot since then so it will be interesting to see what changes will be made.
6 years is certainly longer than some 40K editions, so it’s not entirely unexpected. It had to happen at some point and X-Wing players have been crying out for an FAQ because of some of teh interactions, so a second edition probably makes sense.
Odd if that is the box art that it shows Darths ship which you don’t actually get in the box.
great figures.
I don’t really see what all the fuss is about. We all knew that there was going to be a second edition – all successful games end up having multiple editions and subsequent editions often make stuff from the previous editions obsolete. I don’t see why the cards being obsolete is any worse than army lists being rendered obsolete. I think there’s quite a lot of unanswered questions that their FAQ doesn’t cover. What’s in the conversion packs? How much will they cost? What elements of the 1st edition are obsolete, is it just the ships or is it the… Read more »
Conversion packs are ~£37 each and are sold per faction. They will include around 150 upgrade cards but it has not been stated how many unique cards there will be, or how many duplicates. Also it is highly likely that some upgrade cards will no longer exist, while most others will have been reworded to fit with the rules changes. So maybe Push the Limit for example will still exist but you only get two of them in a Conversion pack. In the Team Covenant interview it was said that you will not have to buy the Imperial pack to… Read more »
FYI the kits include sufficient printed components to run: Rebel 3 – A-wing 2 – ARC-170 2 – Auzituck Gunship 2 – B-wing 2 – E-wing 2 – Ghost 2 – HWK-290 2 – K-wing 2 – Millennium Falcon 2 – Phantom I 2 – Phantom II 2 – Sabine’s TIE Fighter 2 – U-wing 2 – X-wing (since you need the new core set anyway, you will have enough for 3) 2 – Y-wing 2 – YT-2400 4 – Z-95 Headhunter Imperial 2 – Alpha-class Star Wing 3 – Inquisitor’s TIE 2 – Lambda-class Shuttle 2 – TIE Advanced… Read more »
I got that bit about the ship list, wasn’t sure what you get in terms of pilots and upgrade cards or how many of any given component you get (i.e. movement dials). I did suspect that pretty much all printed components would be obsolete – it would be unlikely that only certain cards would become obsolete. However I don’t quite think FFG have been clear enough with regards to exactly what you get via their main website – I certainly couldn’t figure it out when I read the FAQ (admittedly they might have corrected it, I haven’t checked and I… Read more »
Based on these lists I will need two of Imperial and three of rebel. I have that many X-wings, Y-wings, and Tie fighters.
I hope they do individual ship upgrades.
@siygess uk price will be £47 per upgrade pack and ships are going to £19 per basic ship. For some they will buy any way, for those on the fence that might well be the tipping point.
£47 Ouch. That’s me out
That’s just RRP though. The Outpost for example is taking pre orders for £37 and there may well be others that are cheaper again. Their re-packaged fighters are £14.50 (though this IS a rise on the small 1.0 fighters, which of course were cheaper again 2 years ago)
Rrp on fighters is £19. Given retail pricing released yesterday not sure what that pricing was based on, but then again I won’t use outpost don’t trust their business practices.
Either way for what I do with x-wing not going to be upgrading. In comparison to GW pricing is high for an edition change, and GW are on the higher side for the industry (Although 8th was done really well)
Even £37 is a lot if you need to buy more than one, which let’s face it most people will need at least 2 (Rebels and Imperials), possibly 3 (Scum & Villainy). And that’s before you start looking at people who have things like TIE swarms or other large squadrons of the same ships. For the record I am not saying what the correct solution to this problem is. I don’t have any idea of FFGs manufacturing costs or predicted sales and really that would need to be factored into any decisions about how to approach making second edition backwards… Read more »
At risk of breaking the internet, I actually agree @onlyonepinman, on everything. I meant PP/Guildball etc have upgraded cards but the dials are the killer.
For some people it will be accepted as a cost for the change, for the fly casual types who don’t touch 100 point tourney style I think its a killer.
I think it’s also the sheer amount of cards. When you factor in all the myriad upgrade cards as well as the pilot/ship cards there’s hundreds, maybe thousands, of cards needing to be replaced. Then factor in the dials and suddenly you have a very expensive prospect. I hope I am wrong but I can see this damaging the game and it’s community. I know a lot of people who play it far more seriously than me (I treat it like a beer and pretzels game) who aren’t particularly well off. They don’t play in loads of tournaments but they… Read more »
I believe all the changes have been needed for some time. The App is a good way to handle changes over time. Everything is good except if you have been playing since the early days and now have to pay to upgrade. The issue is NOT the upgrade so you can use all your old ships, the issue is that you will ONLY get one card so if you want to field 3x of a specific ship, you are not going to spend 3x for each upgrade kit. I believe there are going to be a lot of player who… Read more »
I am really hoping that with the coming of an official builder app they ditch the cards altogether and make upgrade a digital part of the app. I don’t mind trashing all my cards as chasing cards was the main complaint I had with the game. If it’s all available with my roster I’m sold. Though do give us whatever upgraded ship bases those are.
Don’t see that going away @wyrdhunter you’ll just have new ones to chase.
when they announced like $150 to upgrade for faction packs, i was done, watching the x-wing community getting done like that, i felt for them. but hey you get an app an new turrets… christ…
$250 – The First Order and what ever the new Reliance is called are faction 4 & 5
damn 🙁
Some of the rule changes look pretty interesting. I particularly like the compression of the Pilot Skill ranges, which have been halved. Now initiative will be more important and more ships on both sides will be acting at the same time (meaning more engagement through simultaneous destruction). Probably means Veteran Instincts now only increases PS by 1 and Adaptability has probably gone away completely.
And here I was just saying a few months ago that it was about time for them to stop scraping the bottom of the lore barrel and just make everyone re-buy everything with a new edition. Great minds think alike!
So, I have only half a dozen scum ships, but I have to buy a new core set and an upgrade pack to play them?
Do we have some Intel on whether we will actually need the pilot and upgrade cards or whether they can also be viewed in the App?
As a non XWing player this is very interesting because I’d tried multiple times to get into the game and now will be a great oportunity.
The “Conversion” from 1.0 to 2.0 is not as bad as I could been but is not perfect either. It does not affect me so I might not coment about it, but I can see it been positive or negative in a player to player case.
I’ve been giving this a lot of thought overnight and I have only two things to say. 1. FFG have (it would first seem) done a great job of addressing the games imbalances and I hope to see the old favorites back on the board 🙂 2. FFG are great at distributing board games…. but are awful at miniatures games…. and they have totally f****d this up. How? I’ll explain… A lot of people have drawn comparisons between X-wing 2.0 to the recent 40k 8th and FOW 4th releases. They are all re-boots sure but let’s look at them in… Read more »
I think you have summed this up quite reasonably. The conversion kits don’t actually seem like they suited to end users they’re suited to FFGs manufacturing needs – i.e. it is easier for them to bulk manufacture a fixed pack at that size than to sell conversion kits for just a single ship with a single dial and a single set of cards. For people with small fleets it’s probably cheaper to buy one conversion pack. For people with very large collections the conversion packs were never going to represent value for money.
Then there’s people like me who just don’t take the game seriously enough to upgrade to second edition. I don’t play competitively and I have maybe 5 or 6 ships from each faction. I wouldn’t need multiple conversion packs for each faction but would need one per faction, so that’s £111 for the conversion packs. Then presumably £40 for the game. So all in £151 to update my collection to 2nd edition isn’t something I can really justify. It also means I probably won’t buy any more X-Wing stuff because new ships won’t be compatible with the old game. I’m… Read more »
So, no conversion materials for extant Resistance or First Order ships? Will these come later?
Never mind. The Fantasy Flight FAQ states these conversion kits will be part of the second wave of 2nd edition releases.
If Legion had an App I would not have got on board. I will take this as a warning of things to come and limit my future purchases accordingly.
For those that do not have or want a shartphone, will FFG publish points values on their site?
Apparently periodically
There will be mobile and web based versions of the app.
A couple of interviewsgames are trying to sell this as you will only need to upgrade the faction you playwant and that it will be easy / cost friendly well bollocks to that as most players including myself that I know have a collection through the range of all factions and if I was going to upgrade would want to do all of it for games at home ect. So as mentioned previously its going to be costly ,so im just going to still play version 1.0
