Nice review, I agree that the colour of the models should have been different according to faction. They managed it with Spacehulk.
Im really not sure re this game Limited edition, fragile models, limited playability, to thin play mat, pricey, rules dont seem that great to me, not really a board game but also not really a wargame, two forces should be in two colours as you say vs Looks nice, playmat looks really nice, possibility for expansion- fans, wd, box sets etc, rules i guess are ok, a lot of cool bits if thats your thing, looks nice painted. If i knew GW would support this via the web and wd it would make more sense to me but i predict… Read more »
Just to correct one small error here. When you resolve Boarding actions, you apply all damage cards, not just crew.
More commentary and a review of DF on my blog at http://www.Quirkworthy.com
I hope you have a flame proof suit for all the fans you may annoy…Im glad my £70 is still in my pocket.
Lovely sea cloth and some sexy figs do not a game make- have you seen Star Fleet captains? as it looks good but is also expensive and seems to suffer with very fragile figs
You could also have a look at:

who comes to a very similar conclusion. Might need a job lot of those flame proof suits 🙂
I wandered who it was who’d linked my review from Beasts of War!!! Cheers, I think. lol. The core mechanics under the hood of the game are fine. But, as you’ve said, it’s really none of it anything we haven’t already seen in other naval games… well those of us who look outside of GW product every now and then any way. However, you can’t criticise Phil for sticking with things that work, I wouldn’t have strayed to far from the tried and tested myself on this. I have to admit reading through the rules it didn’t seem so bad…… Read more »
A house rule for the very random parts seems to be the main fix
Great walkthrough over the two videos guys, sadly I still can’t see a reason to get it, no support, no expansions, no new models sort of destroys its appeal to me, even though I can see whats there is very well done. However, I think it once again highlights GW’s seemingly aimless business practices, limited edition, unreplaceable , fragile models are not kid friendly. From a company that sees the older hobbyists as an inconvenience and spend years destroying the background to appeal to the younger ones they cherish, comes a game geared towards older gamers and collectors. I just… Read more »
Great review guys! I look forward to having some games when ive finally finished the painting. Ill take it down to my schools club and see what the guys there think about it.
I wasn’t sure about the game. Mainly because of the cost, $190 here in AUS, if it was say $140 I would have ordered a copy sight unseen. Bought it at gamesday as it really did look cool and had a simple enough play system that suits a “game-in-a-box”. I don’t think the models are too fragile. A heavy handed person can and will break anything even a solid ork meganob (the old metal ones) so simply take some care with them. To which I’ll check out the battlefoam option. As a suggestion to anyone with the game or about… Read more »
As far as replayability surely there must be some naval war miniatures rules that could be applied to the DF models. Also there seems to be the potential for some great fan generated scenarios.
I agree lots of potential- shame GW will probably not support this. i hope they prove me wrong as it will be a nice change
After some deliberation, I’ve decided not to buy this.
I’ve read so many reviews and battle reports, read so much feedback on various forums and much of it is damning. Some nice stuff in the box no doubt, but the fate cards decide who wins and loses the games.
Sounds like it would need some major houseruling, alterations to make playable.
I’m splitting it with 3 mates, and we’re splitting the cost but we all own 25% of each individual part. and We had the idea of an all inclusive ultimate campaign! Combine, Mighty Empires, Warhammer AND Dreadfleet into one almighty clash of arms!
