Warmachine Unboxing: Cygnar Starter Set
September 13, 2016 by dignity
Today the double J duo are opening up some Warmachine from Privateer Press, with the release of Mark III we have the new Cygnar Starter Set.
There have been some new rule changes which you can see in detail on our Lock n' Load Release Weekend Blog, the biggest change in Mark III has been the points system. However no fear, everything is just as balanced, if not more so.
How do you think Justin should expand his army?

I bought this box. Everything except the minis are ace.
The models are atrocious. So poorly cast in that crapfest of a pvp plastic, that I chucked them back in the box, and have ditched any idea of playing mk3
Woah, back up a bit there.
The minis are produced to a budget to reach new players. They are not representative of Privateer’s work. Please don’t be put off immediately.
Now, I do agree that the models are not great when compared to other manufacturers. I have the same approach toward Infinity metals, which terrify me.
Game wise, Warmachine has always felt like a very large spreadsheet, almost a pivot table. It’s a series of interlocking elements that sort of bind together to create effects and bonuses and the real skill is in ordering those and layering them. It requires significant commitment from the player to know his, and his opponent’s forces.
Please do give the game a chance: don’t judge it solely on the models: understand what the company has tried to achieve and respect that.
I am afraid I don’t understand the direction of your comment. Having personally held the starter boxes in my hands at my local, the new boxes are really junk plastic. And as the boxes have the PP logo all over them then they are quite literally a representation of Privateers work. While I personally don’t like the game much I don’t feel that the quality of the game itself is in question here, just the quality of these new models. The metal figs they produce are great and I paint them even though I don’t play because I like the Everblight figs. But I never give points for effort, only final result. If you want a cheap entry point to a game that requires that many figs then you get cheap products. I’m sure if @nosebiter had opened the box and seen the quality of PP’s metals in there he might not have been as harsh.
I bought the Khador battle box. While the warjacks suffers from mold lines, the warcaster, Lord Koslov, was very well sculpted and detailed.
Picked it up a while ago. I’d add Trenchers and Stormblades to the list for infantry, and a Stormclad for an extra heavy. The Trenchers are now Tough and their Dig In is more useful as fewer things ignore it and the smoke, plus their rifles are good and they still have CRA. Throw Snipe on them and add their UA then watch them work. Stormblades are still slow but hit like a semi-truck and Maddox’s Dauntless Resolve is perfect for them. +3 ARM to make them ARM 18 AND Tough. Combine that with their UA who now grants Iron Zeal for a turn, for another +3 ARM and can’t be knocked down(which makes Tough better) and can’t be made stationary. Finally I’d add a GunMage Captain Adept Solo, he is just a made killer in the new edition. He is back to full on ignoring Stealth, and now he has four shot types and can apply two to each ranged attack.
This was a nice unboxing. I have bought the MkIII Cygnar box too. It is way better balanced than the old one in mu opinion. I did not have a chance to paint it up and play with Beth Maddox so I cannot help you @dignity However, for the start get a journeyman warcaster and put the firefly under him. Add a Stormclad for some more punch. Get two units of Stormblades and some solo support like Rhupert Corvolo. Just for starters.
I agree it was a nice job on the unboxing. I cannot help with next models as I play Retribution which seems to die horribly to everyone. Keep up the nice work.
Thanks Justin and John (although John .. you did look a bit bored early on =) )
I also own the Cygnar box set . I didn’t mind the plastic… yes it had a few marks but they cleaned up …. (I must be old … I am used to flash mold lines and sh!tty casts and these were quite good and by no means the worst I have ever seen )
Justin you have every right to show off your minis you did a good job mate.
(Now I just hve to paint mine ……sigh)
IMO to expand the Cygnar starter box (I am a Cygnar player BTW) you: 1) Kick Beth to the curb and start dating Haley(1), 2) junk the Firefly, 3) Upgrade the Lancer to Thorn, 4) add a Hammersmith and a Squire, 5) Longgunners + UA and Sword Knights + UA, 6) Have a side thing going with Lt. Jakes and buy her a Charger so she doesn’t tell Haley, 7) pretend to be pious around Harlan Vesh, and 8) have a Gun Mage Captain Adept handy to smacketh down followers of Mennoth you may run across. In all seriousness though this is what I’m currently running and it’s working well.
@dignity If you really want to continue using the whole battle box try this. Add a Reliant, Stormblade Infantry + UA and Stormgunners (jackmarshal the Firefly), Arcane Tempest Gun Mages + UA, Gun Mage Captain Adept, Harlan Vesh (or Capt. Strangeways), and Trencher Commandos.
Great job guys. You covered a lot of great points for this force. I would suggest adding Stormblades next. Not sure what, if any, jack you should add next though. But I fought against those stormblades added to the basic box and it was tough to work around them.
Justin you did a good job painting those models.
I picked up the Khador Battlegroup having not touched a minis game for around 16 years. I was looking for something that I liked the looked of and had a interesting variety of minis to assemble and paint. I love the look of WM and Hordes and the battlegroups are good value for money, shame they didn’t exist back when I was regular down at the gaming club.
I have to agree that the quality of the minis is lacking. My jacks are plagued with mold crevices rather than lines which are proving tricky to rectify. I’ve sent some pics off to PP in the hope they can send some new parts out. Regardless I am keen to progress with WM and some of the new plastic kits look really good quality. Shame they don’t give a better first impression with the battle group box sets.
