Like you said, not essential, but they are pretty sweet tokens, and the plastic templates will last A LOT longer than cardboard would.
I highly rate the templates, but I find the tokens to be a bit fiddly, you could do the same job with little bits of card with the spell names written on them.
For Focus I use little plastic gems. They’re chunky enough to be easily handled, but small emough to drop onto a warjack base if necessary. Here’s a picture…

Something I did when starting out was to print them onto a trasparent inkjet sheet, which I then laminated for added durability. They are still quite thin, but I have a custom ‘icy effect’ spray template that I use for the Greylords Frostbite spell that has lasted the last 4+ years. I bought two sets of these tokens for my Protectorate of Menoth force & I love them. The focus tokens interlock when they stack which is a nice feature. As well, there is a lot of space to write on the spell, upkeep & blank markers. I was using paper and glass beads before picking these up, & I much prefer these tokens. They aren’t expensive at all & are a nice convenience; especially with all the buffs & fire that the Protectorate throw around.
The older GF9 tokens (now OOP due to licensing) are worth getting a hold of, if you can, esp. for us menites as the packs all came with oodles of fire tokens. The warcogs stuff is good, and the idea of icons paired to a key card is fine, but I personally found them too ‘generic’, the new sets are fantastic though, a fine successor to the original GF9 sets. Now faction Dice would be nice ….
