Quick Look: Warlords of Erehwon By Warlord Games
March 6, 2019 by dracs
Gerry got the chance to dig into the rulebook for Warlord's new fantasy tabletop miniatures game Warlords of Erehwon and couldn't wait to tell us a bit more about this awesome game.
Warlords of Erehwon is a new ruleset written by Rick Priestley, aiming to help us play out large scale battles in whatever fantasy setting we might come up with.
The game is full of classic fantasy staples, including magic and monsters.
However, the focus for this really isn't on the monsters. This is a game focused on the rank and file, whatever shape they may be.
It is also full of the kind of humour that has come to mark out Priestley's writing style.
This is a game that has really caught Gerry's eye, and opens up the table to whatever fantasy settings or armies you would like to play with.
Let us know your thoughts on Warlords of Erehwon below.

I like the use of the word Nowhere (spealt backwards) for the title. Fits with the theme of reusing minis and making up things for yourself, you can be a lord of nowhere and anywhere.
I like the mix of bolt action mechanics with some humour.
Be a good use of my arceworlde minis until that second edition comes out.
It’s also a homage to the fantasy greats Lieber and Butler and their locations, newhon and erewhon
Spangly armour? Sounds like ‘Disco Wargaming’ to me and that’s not a good thing.
But on a serious note… using minis lying about is always good… it’s what finally convinced me to buy Rangers of Shadow Deep.
Thanks for this. It turns out that I did have some misconceptions about WOE. And the truth is way more betterer 😉 than I had it in my head.
The figure-agnostic nature of the game makes me think that it would be interesting to use WOE to explore possibilities in the Frostgrave universe as Royals send larger forces to explore the Frozen City.
I think I may have played another game by this young phenom. Perhaps I will give this a closer look.
I am rather interested from this system.
beautiful art in this book
The artwork is gorgeous throughout and the stories that pepper the layout are proper fantasy, compared to the rules which are whimsical
Nice review, would love to see you guys do a Let’s Play of this. Side note, aren’t Gnolls heyena-faced rather than dog-faced? ?. Also, what sets them apart from Orcs or Beastmen? Considering the count-as ethos to the game, is there a reason they got their own list rather than using one of those? (I know the list choice was to do with what his mates were playing, but I’d have thought they’d have been covered by one of those rather than needing their own list). When you say big monsters, are we talking circa 5th ed Warhammer Fantasy big,… Read more »
Large monster in the 8th/aos sense that the base covers half the footprint of the rulebook.
In that case hopefully they’re the points cost of an entire warband in and of themselves so will usually only see use as occasional scenario based events.
ah you meant what are included in the book, I read that as what ones did Rick say GW ruined fantasy with in 8th edition. No it’s the smaller 50mm based sensible monsters, but they’re still a bit OP compared to tiny infantry hence the rules below that foehammer talks about 🙂
The monsters range a decent range. There are ogres, but then there are also gargantuan spiders and dragons. However, large monsters are interesting. Like BA, if a unit is hit, it gets a pin marker, regardless of if damage is caused. Large monsters don’t have wounds. When “wounded” a large monster rolls on a monster damage chart. That roll might kill it (roll a 10) but many other results hamperthe monster in some way, in particular giving additional pin markers (1, D3, D6). This leads to several game mechanics 1) if a unit gets pins equal to its courage stat,… Read more »
Ooooh! The rules and dynamics of those gnolls sound very interesting indeed.
And I happen to have some of those gnolls here beside me now…..
.
.
.
But perhaps, not enough, I would have to buy more lovely NorthStar Gnolls…. Oh WOE, what have you done? 😉
I love the way you can stick any figures into this game.
Yeah, ive seen people play an army of old WHFB miniatures against Song of Ice and Fire minis, or LoTR minis against WRath of Kings.
Could be a good ruleset to replay Orcs Drift,Mc Death and Terror of the Lichmaster. Seems to something similar games size to the very original warhammer
Now where did I put the Grenadier undead giant mammoth
Still think it would look good in 15mm as well
Am a growing fan of these rules. The firey balls spell is amazing especially as I am very immature!
Does this system require the customer ‘Order Dice’ sold by Warlord?
They’re handy but d6 will do the same job.
You’d need home made counters as well as the D6, since a Down order stays on the table (bad!), while an Ambush order can be converted to any other order (good!).
It’s not as easy to replace the order dice as in Bolt Action for example.
No. It’s exactly the same as the bolt action dice. My friend already posted a chart you could use. Just assign an action against value. 1s are down 2s advance and so on.

No, it’s not exactly the same as the BA dice because you’re _using them differently than in BA_. Of course I know they’re physically the same (I own four sets already), but that’s not the point.
All you really need is something to know what unit to activate.
You could use poker chips for example.
Both teams would have to use the same size and type of token, because otherwise there’d be an unfair advantage when taking an order token from the bag.
I wasn’t sure about this but seeing this video has convinced me to get the book. A Let’s Play of this would also be great guys
I definitely want to get one done. Just need to work out what the forces might be for it.
on the site Warlord sell a starter set with orc warband and skeleton. I’m sure you guys have some of those hanging around.
Or pick something mad that would be cool
we have a box of each, not enough for a real game. I have halflings from Westfaila that I want to get painted and then I’m not sure what else to put up against them. There are plenty of options about for sure.
Looks like I will have to buy (Beg Borrow Steal) this book. The Dice, Coin, Chit, in a bag is a good activation method. I remember my first adventurers into Warhammer that had a card game in the middle of it, that would be a nice addition to the more modern games rather than always flinging dice at your opponent.
do you mean the winds of magic deck for casting?
That’s the one.
That’s an interesting idea
I think some sort of expanded scenario booklet would be good *Eh* expansion for this system.
Maybe even a campaign generator sort of thing ?
Think this is a good demonstration of ‘spangly armour’:

Nothing wrong with sparkley armour as it helps with identification. In our D&D world one of the countries (Rhyvira) was lawful Evil and we all played chaotic good freedom fighters/terrorists/idiots from the Rhyvirian Hand Commandos who all wore balaclava helmets decorated with sequins so we could identity each other more easily when the balaclavas were pulled down over our faces on a mission/adventure
Any chance we will see a WoE Bootcamp in the future?
Might be hard. BoW Boot camps are very dependant on the game manufacturer being involved, and providing the product to support the boot camps (i.e. the rules and the armies). The problem with this game is Warlord primarily has the book, and a very small selection of army figs. This makes it difficult unless everyone coming to the bootcamp wants to play Orcs or Undead.
The multiple actions for big guys really caught my attention when I heard about it. This is definitly something I am curious about. I’d like to know more before I consider reading 200 pages of rules though. Any chance of not just a playthrough, but watching you go through building 2 armies around what models you have including a discussion on coming up with your own stats? I hope the book offers some advice on doing that fairly.
I’ll talk to the guys on Thursday when I’m down, if there isn’t the time to do it there I’ll see if I can go through it by myself and post it separately in the forum. I’m toying with doing two small forces, I have greeks that I could use as olympians and put them up against something else unusual, maybe beastmen, gnolls or halflings.
Anyway I’ll see what I can do.
However it may mean there is more time between the list building and actual lets play if I’m going to do it on my own time ^^
Cool. Don’t stress yourself doing this, although it would be interesting. I’ve enough games keeping me going so content or not I’m not jumping on this right away. I am intrigued though, and the more random models I buy the more a game like this appeals to me so I can use them.
This may be a game for me since it requires rolling low values on dice.
I grabbed this at a local con from the Warlords booth, along with a few units of Halflings.
I’ve been on the fence with this awhile myself. As I already have BA and Antares I will have to give it a try.
