Team Yankee Unboxing: ZSU-23-4 Shilka AA Platoon
August 25, 2016 by dignity
Today we're Unboxing the Shilka AA Platoon from Team Yankee.
These little tanks are beasts on the tabletop. They may not be as pretty as the others we've been unboxing but in true Soviet fashion, they're built for utility, not for aesthetics.
If you need some Anti-Air capability for those nasty helicopters soaring over your army these vehicles are the ticket to victory.
Have you played games with the Shilka?

Ah yes, the dreaded Shilka. A must-have for defense against all those pesky Cobras and Warthogs! A couple of these, integrated with some SA-8 or 13 systems, will at least make NATO players think twice about air power, and free up your Hinds to do that they’re supposed to, kill Abrams and Leopards. 🙂 Another great unboxing @johnlyons and @dignity !
Seeing this make me wish they get to Israel all the faster. I have to wonder though is how many nations had their own full spectrum armor. With that we could at least guess at how many big releases they might do. Followed my notable other vehicles produced by nations not all ready covered.
ZSU23/4 entered service in mid-1960’s and was used by the Egyptians to devastating effect against Israeli jets forced to lower altitude to evade the SA-6 batteries. They carry 2000 rounds of ammo which in theory gives 30 seconds (or slightly more) of firing in total. Tunguska and Pantsir are far more potent, having much bigger guns and the load of 8 – 12 SAM’s ready to fire. Tunguska uses a newer chassis than ZSU23/4 as that was a very old one derived in part from the PT-76 light tank. You can find lots of footage of all of these in… Read more »
Aiee! @dorthonion ninja’d in front of my post. Well played. 😀
In no way shape or form meant to “correct,” only to add to the conversation 😀 : 00:40 – the designations for these Soviet AA systems actually has a little logic to it once you get the hang of it. ZU = antiaircraft. ZSU = self propelled / vehicle antitaircraft. The first number is the mm size of the gun, the second number is the number of guns. So the old twin 57mm you see bolted on the back of Syrian pickup trucks used to me ZU-57-2s. Built into turret and mounted on an old T-54 tank chassis (available from… Read more »
Hellfire is subsonic and frankly Pantsir was created to cope with those and destroy the Apaches before they could open even fire. Those tube launchers can carry several types of missile so you have no precise knowledge of the type of nastiness that is coming your way at speeds greater than mach 3. Oh – the 4 30mm cannon on Pantsir have a combined cyclic rate of 10000 rounds per minute…. only 700 rounds of ammo on board.. so that works out at 4.2 seconds of shooting.
“Hellfire is subsonic and frankly Pantsir was created to cope with those and destroy the Apaches before they could open even fire.” – Fair enough, I’m talking about Shilkas vs. Apaches, per John’s reference of Gulf One (9:55)
still a nasty killing machine whatever fly’s near it.
Tunguska is that not the place in Russia that got hit by a huge air blast everyone thought was an illegal nuke test when it first happened but was a comet or meteor exploding before hitting the ground?
I don’t think that anyone in 1908 thought about nukes. That was when the meteor hitted the area in Tunguska. And yes it’s a region in central Russia.
Oops didn’t think it was that early.
Have four in my TY army, rolling in right behind the T-72 mass. At their worse they keep the Cobras moving…and moving Cobras aren’t shooting at my tanks.
TY has really forced me into trying to learn actual Soviet Tactics, which seem to me a lot more impressive a level or two above TY’s scale.
Shilka are still in use now…
Are there going to be any unboxings of American units for TY? I get that you guys are in Norther Ireland, but when the game’s called Team YANKEE, it seems weird we never actually see any Yankees.
There are plenty of unboxings featuring Yankees… here are two examples:

The models look decent enough, but could someone answer my question with regards to the expense of the model? Looking online, it looks a box of these 2 tanks, sets you back just under £15. In fact, the range as a whole looks relatively expensive, but I don’t know if that is actually the case because I’m not really all that familiar with wargaming on this scale. Flames of War seems to supply the same kind of stuff (tanks, infantry) and it generally seems much less expensive, although I’ll happily admit I’m not well versed on this as a subject… Read more »
There are alternatives: http://wam-plus.blogspot.co.uk/2015/08/zvezda-1100-hot-war-zsu-23-4-shilka.html
I have built the Zvezda one myself. Not bad, but the detail isn’t quite as high as seems to be on the BF version, and the Zvezda mini’s turret was a little fiddly to put together (it wasn’t one part like this). Also, the quad 23mm and the support frame was tough . . . but looks great once it was finally put together. http://www.beastsofwar.com/groups/painting/forum/topic/im-late/?topic_page=9 There have also been unboxings for the American units in Team Yankee during the Team Yankee Boot Camp late last year, although the guy on the left is kind of annoying . . . 😀… Read more »
Here is another potential source of models: http://www.skytrex.com/
And if it is aircraft you want: https://www.emodels.co.uk/model-kits/aircraft-plastic-model-kits/aircraft-model-kits-1-100
Lots of others out there though some of them probably need a bit of houserules and cards made up to make them compatible with Team Yankee
How about one of these for ridiculous fire support? (Discontinued but a few kits still out there)

Pity it was not a B52H but it is a beast
Good grief! A B-52 at 1:100? the wingspan would be 1.85 feet (22 1/4 inches)! i don’t even want to know what the attack template would be.
Turn 1, movement phase: I’m voluntarily withdrawing all my forces off the table.
Turn 1, combat phase: My B-52 attacks. It’s template is the entire table with 1,250 dice per target . . . 😀
Turn 2, movement phase: My forces come back on the table. Whattya know? I win again. 😀
Template size = Win
loadout a – Nuclear win
loadout b – bellyfull of ALCMs win
loadout c – carpet bombs they do this in groups big win
Having seen what a Shilka can do from the wrong end when used against ground targets, I have nothing but mad respect for this piece of kit. These things are like an A-10 on tracks.
