Unboxing: Team Yankee – SA-13 Gopher SAM Platoon
June 21, 2016 by johnlyons
It's time to hit the battlefield again and get our 80's tape back into the boombox as we're opening up Team Yankee's devastatingly zippy SA-13 Gophers from Battlefront.
The Gophers were nippy on the battlefield and just what the Soviets required to fend off those pesky air raids.
How have you played the Gophers in your games?

@johnlyons The SA-13 isn’t quite the system for engaging B-52’s….If a B-52 is in the Strela engagement zone then something is seriously wrong! You’re probably thinking of systems such as the SA-6 or the SA-11 for more medium range AD or the S-300 for Theatre level AD. The SA-13 is designed to engage air targets up to 3000m (just shy of 10000ft) and out to about 5km. Targets are visually acquired by the gunner (missileer?), who has a viewing window underneath the radar in the ‘turret’, and then the radar is used to confirm the range only. Very much designed… Read more »
Got my Shilka already … now it’s time for some more air defense for my fleet of T-72s. 😀 Why? Because I hate A-10s. Because I hate Cobras. I’m dreading the day Battlefront comes out with the Apache.
And the Soviets had gorgeous vehicles! Come on, Justin! 😀
@Oriskany hate is such a strong word. I’m already planning on the arrival of Apache and Kiowas along with Blackhawks and then we will so you Soviets what air assault is really supposed to look like.
@johnlyons A-10s would do gun runs often below 1000 feet AGL, I have seen them hugging just above treetop, one pilot even bragged he had sucked in leaves into his engines. (Pilots love to embellish) B-52 was a high altitude bomber and they are still in use. We have some stationed at Diego Garcia.
8:40 – The altitude for an A-10 on a gunnery gun with probably be less than 1000 feet, but 1000-2000 meters away laterally. Just a guess, though. Not a “smart” or radar-guided system, the pilot has to be able to see the target to engage, which limits engagement ranges and altitudes. The primary missile for the A-10 was usually the AGM-65 Maverick. How high / far the A-10 would be while engaging with this I think would depend on the target acquisition of the specific missile version. Some Mavericks acquired targets via a video feed from the missile itself, which… Read more »
Got a platoon of these for my Father’s Day present. My lads know me so well 🙂
I think they look great may make a good alterative to a AA chimera.
@oriskany @johnlyons 1:1 scale 🙂
