Dropfleet Commander Unboxing: PHR Battleship
December 23, 2016 by lloyd
It's time for us to get stuck into some Dropfleet Commander as we unbox the PHR Battleship from Hawk Wargames.
With an amazing aesthetic and some wonderful rules to go with it, it's hard to ignore this faction and its particular ships.
Are you a PHR player looking for some big guns?

Battlewagons – what’s not to like? 🙂
Torpedoes are fired as part of launching assets at the end of the activation, not during normal weapons fire.
yeah, has anybody played around with torpedoes? they are an interesting “delayed effect” weapon that I feel like have as much of a psychological effect as anything else… that said, the “take 2 x 45 degree turns and still fire one gun” special order, while giving you a minor spike, is actualy not too bad of an option while trying to shake bombers and the torpedo… that said, is there anything about “having to take all those turns”? .. I mean, could you take that order, then really just move forward and correct your angle a bit? doesn’t seem like… Read more »
So can the ship fire both torpedoes in one turn? they are launch assets… so you can release them (and gain a minor spike) any time you can fire at least one gun… but I believe (could be wrong, I don’t have book in front of me) that you can only fire one torpedo at a time… and then the delayed hit results of the torpedo is interesting too… if you do have 2 enemy ships that are being chased by torpedoes… do you spend extra actions firing at them… lol.. or do you just focus on the other enemy… Read more »
You can only launch one torpedoe at a time if you have a UCM battleship- as it is 1 profile with 2 shoots
The PHR is 2 profils with one shoot each. So it can fire both in a turn – if it is on an order that lets it
I am wrong. the Torpedoes are L (1) for both entries.. which is Linked (1).. and since they both have Linked (1) then they can fire together… so you could launch both the same turn as long as you can fire 1 other weapon… wow…
L(1) in this case is not linked but. L(imited) that they can only be fired once
And then Torpedoes have a Thrust of 9″… but never attack the turn they are launched… the target always has a chance (a small chance, but a chance) to shake the torpedo or a better chance to just delay it hitting them if they perform 2 of the special maneuvers… but the Torpedoes can still target a ship within 2x Thrust, right? so they have an effective initial range of 18″ and aren’t penalized for targeting a ship between 9 – 18″, correct?
I think so and as they are 2 profiles both can be launched the same turn.
On top of everything else
I played my first game of Dropfleet last night. My mate and I are both experienced wargamers, so we jumped in at 1000 points right off the bat. I played Scourge, my mate PHR. Firstly, the game took 5 hours. Obviously, that includes a few tea/wee breaks, and rules checking. Even so, it was GREAT. Absolutely loved the game – there are so many levels to it and so many interesting choices to make. I expect our next game to be quicker, but I can’t see this ever being a light game. I expect a lot of gamers that try… Read more »
I’ve not played with battleships yet but I fancy there is a shaltari one in Santa’s sack.
the PHR ships look fantastic and whether you go launch assets or death ray will both be epic to play.
the size of those things has me super excited for the dreadnoughts.
May your rummaging in Santa’s sack get you what you want 🙂
I borrowed some spare fins from a cruiser sprue to make up a second nose section – although they could have been left over from my “KS BattleCruiser” Cruiser sprue.
If magnetising be careful how you place the magnets… they need to “pull” the nose sections tight backwards.
Still don’t have my pledge.
I feel you, I’m in the same boat. It’s freaking xmas for crying out loud. If only I had known…
@dignity Justin what you seem to forget while loving your dark matter cannon – on the Minos if you can get an enemy in broadside arch you can fire BOTH the broadside and the missiles on a standard order (or any order that let you shoot) – as you can shoot you CA on top of any other weapon.
And the torpedoes. .. Well they are launch assets so you can also fire those if your order allow you.
That is why I love the Minos. It is a in your face close up monster
I really like the design of the PHR battleship.
Also, ship spinning confirmed. 🙂

Ohh. That’s really nice. And Much Larger than I expected. I might need to give this game a go in 2017.
And i’m with Justin: Who won’t love saying “I’m firing my Dark Matter Cannon”?
a big space ship killing barracuda nice.
