Unboxing – Oak & Iron Core Box | Firelock Games
March 31, 2020 by dignity
Today we take an in-depth look at the Oak & Iron Core Box set from Firelock Games.
Justin is in the studio to unbox Oak & Iron. Taking a look inside the box provides a sea map, terrain, card decks and the ships themselves. From sloop to frigate the plastic kits are easy to assemble with most fitting together simply and few outlying pieces might require a touch of glue.
What faction do you want to roll out on the high seas?
The ships are really cute, and detailed. I wish I could go in on the KS back when it was going.
Very nice fleet. However one could do real damage trying to paint and rig these. What type of plastic are they? Soft PVC?
No orks? 🙁
Firelock printing the Dutch flag colours as vertical banners instead of horizontal is confusing indeed. 😉
I’m a very happy camper to have received my Admiral pledge.
On the ‘Oak and Iron’ Facebook page/group there are some really gorgeous painted ships. I hope mine turn out half as good as some of those. ??
lucky you.
Backer orders shipping from our European warehouse will not be ready until June … according to their last update.
🙁
The ships look good, but won’t they slide about on that glossy paper mat?
Neoprene would be a better choice.
Most folks play on the Neoprene Mats they already have in house. It’s pretty tough to put a 3×3 or 4×3 Neoprene Mat in a box that size. Plus it would increase the starter box set quite a bit.
Not to mention that Firelock Games wants this box set to show up on the shelves of local game shop (someday when the FLGS reopen), so you have to keep the box size as small as possible or shops won’t want to stock them.
sure, but it would have increased the cost of this starterset quite a bit.
The kickstarter was focussed on the minis and game.
When they did their Blood&Plunder kickstarter they had a mat as an option for US backers only due to logistics.

I’m sure there are alternatives …
The apprearance of the neoprene mat and islands special offer flyer as first thing out of the box with an expiry date of December 2019 was another gut-punch for EU backers whose boxes got left behind on the dock and won’t be seeing theirs until June 2020…
They handled that in an update already :

“Because of the delays, this coupon will appear to be expired. BUT FEAR NOT! Tablewar has agreed to extend the deal so that backers receiving their games can still use it. …”
a good set of ships to get into the game.
Nice starter set, but I think I prefer the ships by Warlord.
I must admit I’m looking at some of the plastics being handled by Justin wondering just what quality we’re actually getting.
Not sure which game I’d rather pick up. Black Seas or Oak & Iron. Not sure if I’m really sold on the ships in this set from what I’ve seen.
Enjoyed this little video today , brightened up a bit of a stressful day.
This is an awesome game with cool models.
