Unboxing Kings Of War: Basilean Phoenix
January 13, 2020 by avernos
Gerry gets to unbox a beautiful model from one of his favourite games: Kings Of War from Mantic.
The Basilean Phoenix isn't just a gorgeous model for Kings of War, it's one of the best looking models from any wargame. The sculptors at Mantic should be commended. But it's also worth pointing out the excellent paint job done by Angel Giraldez which features on the cover of the box. It's an inspiring build and paint job!
Will you be adding this to your Basilean force?

That’s a hot unboxing…. sorry 😉
Basilean = bad
Salamander = sexy
Mantic still suffer from some inconsistency but the fire chicken looks a stone cold winner.
Aye. Northern Alliance and Nightstalkers seem to be going well I’ve liked what they’ve done so far. With naughty dorfs coming I’ll be keeping an eye to see how it lands if they can continue it will be a good sign
I really like a lot of the Northern Alliance models. I have an army at the pipedream stage.
I have a small army of them. They’re very nice
The model is amazing. Sounds like a filthy support though. I imagine Gerry has 3
Filthy units come in threes
I have one. Two if Warren doesn’t get the chicken first.
If only there was a video showing us how to pin stuff
shame that
artillery fire works well !?! Lol
After thumbing through his books and seeing Angel’s paint job above I have the urge to a) break down and buy an airbrush and b) buy 2 fire chickens and have a go at it with a salamander army. It’s 10 degrees and there’s 2 feet of snow here so rattle cans for priming are a bit problematic even on sunny days even for 25-28mm. I already lost all resolve and bought the 2 new KoW books and the Northern Alliance lord on a chimera for…reasons. Also a bit problematic is that the lads at the nearest FLGS buy Mantic… Read more »
I bought my airbrush for priming and varnishing. Even if you never go beyond that it pays for itself.
That chimera is a beast, I love the goat head 🙂
Those would be my two main applications too. Rattle cans at 65 can be a mess if you’re not careful and you like detail. Right now it’s 12 here and the wind is rising. Lots of snow, lots of negative temperatures common from November to March. Did I mention the wind? Lot of that, too. I guess the titans have replaced the flying circus somewhat in KoW3? I should have checked the new Uncharted Empires first before I ordered the Northern Alliance chimera. I guess the Chaos, er, Varangur lord gets a fox instead of a chimera because the Northern… Read more »
the Varangrr has the chimera so don’t worry there, they use the Northern Alliance human parts of the list as the basis for theirs and then add to it.
What sized square base is that Titan on? I’m trying to compare scale with other large flyers I have (Giant Eagles from LOTR/GW, etc) but Gerry being a giant makes it harder to figure out the scale of that fire-chicken!
Totally unrelated, but I just got a notification that this was my 25th post for 2019… except it’s the 13th of January 2020… lol
Close enough
He says its 75×75 in the video
75×75
a fabulous model a Dremel type device would be great for the mould lines Gerry?
They can be with an etching bit. But. Too high a speed can melt the surrounding resin and it can be easy to go too deep so low speed and take your time if you do
Yes good points @avernos
Damn it ,,,,, You want me to buy the bloody thing don’t you……. my poor sense of financial responsibility, it’s going to be abused again. *sigh*
I really want to paint it more then anything. I think it would be daunting and you definitely use an airbrush..
Can’t wait to get my one!
I like this miniature a lot.
I happend to have won a starter set KoW here on OTT and I can honestly say all the miniatures are quite nice, easy to assemble and very probably nice to paint.
