Unboxing: Bolt Action – Panzer 38(t)
June 26, 2018 by dignity
Justin and John take us through the Panzer 38(t) for Bolt Action by Warlord Games.

Prepare yourself for some epic historical discussions about German farming equipment, tank gimbals and, of course, a discussion over what tank is the cutest tank...
What tanks are in your top three cutest tank list?

Nice looking tank . Always liked the t38 and of course the Marder IIIs built from it . Kit parts – that sight thing that’s on the front panel , is a site for the driver to aim the bow machine gun if no bow gunner . The rear box is for the smoke candles , the box is seen on Pzr II , II and IVs until they moved the smoke launchers to the turret sides . The small solid box on the fender by the jack will be the jack block . You probably could field it as a Vet tank as some German Panzer troops were on loan fighting in Spain . Even though the Russians and Germans had a secret deal to train together , the both kept things from each other . The Russians on seeing the early Panzer IV kept asking if this was the biggest tank the Germans had ( not letting on they had the KV I in development ) . And the Littlefield collection was split up after he died ( about 5 years ago IRC ) . Some museum in the southern states got about half of it , the rest went as single pieces to collectors world wide , probably private collection so the public will never get a chance to see it , pity . Cute tanks / AFVs : 3. Russian T-70 , 2. German 222 armored car , 1. 234 Puma armored car ,(Honorable mention Russian BA-10 AC )
Yep the sight is for the driver. The 38(t) had a Radio Operator/Bow Gunner but the Driver also had a trigger on the steering controls if the Radio operator was busy. This is actually a pretty useful thing and I’m not sure if it ever caught on in things like Sherman’s or Panzer III’s
1. Matilda 1
2. Semovente 75/18
3. M3 Stuart
Another great video, guys. 😀
1) Percentage of German Army circa 1939-40 that was “armored”
Of course you guys are right, it’s very small. How small, well, that depends on how you measure it.
that kind of depends on how you measure it. If you go by divisions, you’re looking at 10 panzer divisions out of an order of battle of 140 divisions (10 May 1940, 110 divisions involved in Case Yellow, I’m assuming something like 30 garrison or training divisions in addition) – this yields a percentage of about 7%, not including motorized, mechanized, etc).
However, if you go by actual number of people in a true “panzer” unit, these are 1939-40 pattern panzer divisions (based around a full panzer brigade of two regiments – this would change later). That only yields a maximum of 20 regiments, or 40 battalions, or 16,000 men out of a total force of (again, summer 1940) 2.5 million – or 0.64% (less than one percent)! We must remember that only the central core of a panzer division was made up of tank formations, they also had two regiments of infantry, artillery, support formations, etc.
Either way, the percentage is very very small.
2) Percentage of 1939-1940 Panzerwaffe made up of PzKpfw 38(t)
About 15%. Specifically, this would be 7th and 8th Panzer Divisions (out of the 39-40 OOB of 10 panzer divisions – these were the only divisions were 38ts were used). But even these wouldn’t be made entirely of 38ts, only the medium companies. The rest would be made of PzKpfw IVs and the light companies PzKpfw Is and IIs.
Basically, the Germans had two out of ten panzer divisions where the PzKpfw III medium tank was switched out for the PzKpfw 38(t).
That said, 6th Panzer Division was equipped with the 35(t) to my knowledge, bringing the total “Skoda percentage” a little higher. Say, 20%? That’s a guess, though.
I know many documentaries give this percentage of 30% or so, but *gasp* – shock / horror – TV documentaries are usually wrong, or at the very least, oversimplified. 😀 They’re overgeneralizing the idea that 30% of panzer divisions (6th, 7th, and 8th out of 1st-10th) were equipped with Pz-38t and 35ts. Again, these divisions only substituted PzKpfw 38(t)s for their PzKpfw IIIs, not Is, IIs, and IVs … and they’re also lumping 35t and 38t into the same general category.
Please understand I’m going after the documentaries here, not you guys. 😀
Top three “cute” tanks?
Tough call. I totally agree with Justin on the Hetzer (technically a tank destroyer, but never mind). Also agree with John on the Panther – not so much “cute” as sexy, and damned dangerous. Saw one of the 12 remaining Panthers in running order during our 70th Normandy Anniversary trip France in 2014. TOTALLY right – getting to see a real one and actually run your fingers over the ripples of the Zimmerint antitank mine paste … chill up the spine …
I would pick the Mark VIb tankette. I also love how it’s called the “Mark Six B” – just like the German Tiger II “Mark Six B.” You’d be hard pressed to find two tanks more different! 😀 😀 😀
Also the Polish TKS tankette. Awww!

John, did you mean the SOMUA S-35 or the Renault R-35? SOMUA is a much better tank, one of the best of the period, but the R-35 is much smaller and thus perhaps more “cute?”
Top three cutest tanks/afv
3 Vickers-Carden-Loyd Utility Type Infanterie
2 Vickers Light Tank MkIV
1 Renault FT31
Favourite 3 would be
Vickers MK VI
Somua S35
TKS
Excellent video guys. Love me some 38(t) action.
In the Book “Panzer Commander” by Hans von Luck he talks about how German propaganda could turn on a dime. After The Invasion of France he talks about how the Propaganda flipped and Hitler/Goebbels started really pumping up the Panzers and basically pulled a Tzeentch “Just as Planned”.
My top Three:
1. 38(t)
2. Crusader. With that sloped turret speeding through the desert it’s so cute until it erupts in flames.
3. Antonov A-40. The Soviet Union’s answer to the Locust and the Tetrarch. They took a T-60 (which is pretty cute as is) and slapped wings and a tail on it. It’s very cute and even though the Soviets abandoned it they still made and flew one so it makes my list.
Nice video guys. Justin, that track is totally possible to build wrong, I put one of the small front tracks on upside down. D’oh!
But then, I built mine as a Swedish Stridsvagn m/41, so there’s a few small conversions on it. 🙂
Cute tank list:
3. Panzer I
2. Panzer 38(t)
1. Renault FT (it was still around!)
1: The M3 Stuart
2: Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf.C
3: Matilda Mk.III
