Quick Look: The Great War
February 20, 2019 by dignity
Justin and John defy time and space itself as they give a preview into a new scenario and Ruleset for The Great War.
The guys get to talk about a ruleset that they are not even allowed to show on camera yet. As well as exciting hints at things to come, Justin and John dazzle us with unstructured discussions of the period which usefully contextualises the ruleset despite the fact that it is not possible to break the embargo chains.
If you were trying to seduce John with a never seen before tank blueprint, what random shape would it be?

A dong… the tank would look like dong. But only when you directly at it’s front XD
If you fire small arms at it and they ricochet off it would that be dinging the dong?
And then they grab a lamb…
Guys I am very excited for this book. This is one of my favorite games. I’d really like to see Battlefront reintroduce their models to make them more available than they are right now. The current rules easily expand to the Sino-Polish war of 1919-1920, which allows some really cool unit mixes. The Pols wore German, French and British uniforms. For the Soviets, again German and their WWII infantry and cavalry work well. Both sides employed large groups of cavalry. The Soviets had a few MK V’s. The Pole’s had a whole regiment of FT’s. And, both sides used armored… Read more »
I´d like to see rules for attacking fortresses, like Vaux and Douaumont, and rules for fighting inside these fortresses.
Also I´d like some stuff from the Ottomans and the Russians, even if the book is centred around the 1918 battles. Ottomans because of Gallipoli. Then there´s need for an army list for WW I ANZAC as well.
Last fhing I´d like to have is something covering the war in the colonies, especially East-Africa.
I would love to see some Middle East and East Africa action.
Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck running around with his Askari’s would be a great compliment to the, comparatively, heavily armoured forced of Western Europe.
I was able to pick up the first edition of “Great War” and a few sets of British, French and Germans from Old Glory. Unfortunately, it is all still on my to-do list. The first edition rules were a bit overwhelming, as mentioned in the video. Now the 2nd edition and cards are going on preorder and since I should have more free time in the near future, should be able to get the Great War up and running. I was very surprised at how few WWI games appeared from 2014 on. I had expected much more, especially early and… Read more »
There were plenty of good WW1 rules out before 2014 so probably no need for anymore really. Great War Spearhead is the biggie in terms of scale then there is Square bashing by Peter Pig and If the Lord Spares Us for the middle East by Too fat Lardies but they did do a Western Front conversion in one of their specials. There are some good free sets as well. Kallistras is pretty good. I’m sure there’s lots more
its the same with the bouncing bombs the water forces all/most off the blast to the dam @dignity
something like this perhaps @johnlyons

I would disagree with John about the Germans and trench raids .At this part of the war the Allies were far superior in mounting these operations. And we’re usually conducted up to an entire Battalion being involved if you add in diversionary raids and short sharp artillery barrages and defensive be barrages
The German’s could probably execute the individual raids themselves better than the Allies only when they used their dedicated Storm Troopers but the Allies were better at raiding and could raid better with generic units.
sounds like a great game.
five tables in a row playing at the same time will look fantastic for this game guys.
any tank is a good tank the IS,II would be a perfect tank john will go for I think
If you dropped the miniature scale to 6mm on say 25mm x 1.whatever bases for regular inf, you could fit a lot more terrain types without maybe needing to go to 12ft by 4… or maybe go that and go even bigger on the terrain…
The one thing I was really hoping for this book that seams missing was aircraft, really looking forward it it though and hopefully some force lists that represent Middle East battles
At the Swiss end of the trench line the Swiss erected barbed wire across their border and had border units making sure no Axis or Allied troops entered Switzerland
On the other end the trench lines ended up in the Sand Dunes in Nieuport
By the middle of July 1916 the Allies were using creeping barrages and forming up attacks starting in no man’s land
@dignity Not sure what you mean by heavy barrage but at the 3rd battle if Ypres they worked out about at least quarter of ton of explosives hit each square yard
of the battlefield
Lots of different terrain types in 1918 I can only imagine to be mud with trenches, mud with buildings, mud with a tree trunk and so on.
I would definitely like to see a let’s play of this.
In-boxing without a carton.
I do hope they include the war in the east.
Another 5 tanks and I will have 21? A7V.
The end of the trench is a fishing pool.
21?. You’ll have more than they built in real life
but consider all of the repaints, lovely colours all round. But useful cameo is questionable.
ooh … cool Team Yankee style rules ?
Landships had special rules, so that will be an exception.
At the end of the line… Back in those days there was something called a contact point when you were in the defense. Each unit was suppose to man it so you had physical contact between elements. If the front was really well coordinated you had supporting fires that established a crossfire in the gap. It was also not unusual for the reserve to be positioned along the boundary in case something occurred and a penetration happened, it would run into the reserve. That said, it is amazing how often in history this simple technique was overlooked. Or the force… Read more »
Wish I had the time, the space, the money… And I didn’t have already too many projects on the workbench…
I’m so sad I can’t take up to this game!!!
