Darrell opens another tank platoons for Flames of War, today its the German Panzer IV.
Designed as an infantry-support tank, the Panzer IV was not originally intended to engage enemy armour, that function was performed by the lighter Panzer III. However, with the flaws of pre-war doctrine becoming apparent and in the face of Soviet T-34 tanks, the Panzer IV soon assumed the tank-fighting role of its increasingly obsolete cousin. The most widely manufactured and deployed German tank of the Second World War, the Panzer IV was used as the base for many other fighting vehicles, including the Sturmgeschütz IV tank destroyer, the Wirbelwind self-propelled anti-aircraft weapon, and the Brummbär self-propelled gun, amongst others.
Technically those are jagdpanzer IV tank destroyers, as opposed to a simple panzer IV, which was the actual tank. Also, does the model only come with the 7.5 cm L70? I believe the jagdpanzer IV first saw service in Italy with the shorter 7.5cm L48 gun.
Oh, and a panzer IV H is the tank I’d most like to ride around in Darrell, though I’d be the commander. Actually, I’d just stand outside the tank and look at it. i think I might be a bit too tall to fit in a WWII era tank.
Tanks = turret, No Turret= Jag Panzer
I dont know why they couldnt just keep churning out PzIV H and Stug III’s rather than mucking around with silly cool toys. The King Tiger was awesome I have to say
Because German High Command was convinced that armoured warfare would go the way of naval warfare. increasingly large vehicles, firing larger and larger shells, covered with thicker and thicker armour. They weren’t building prototypes of the Maus for no reason..
Blackbrunswicker.
Yes they are Jagdpanzer IV/70(Z).
75mm L70 main armament firing HE and APCR.
Late war tank hunter variant (1944 onwards).
Ypu are correct the first tank hunter variant used the standard main armament of the Pzkw IV H/J,a 75mm L48.
I would also choose to be the tank comander.
However I would prefer to be in a ‘tank hunter’.
Russian SU 85.
German Jagdpanther
British Avenger
American Jackson.
Very nice.
Aye he’s not technically wrong saying just saying Panzer IV as the Jagpanzer IV was built on a Panzer IV chassis but would have been nice to hear a bit more about the Jagpanzer itself.
Wish they covered more FOW stuff.
It’s a bit of a shame that they didn’t include any of the short L48 barrels in the kit. The only difference between the model Jagdpanzer IV/70 and earlier Jagdpanzer IV/48 (beside the gun of course) is the exhaust.
Still a very cool looking tank. Ready to take on even the heaviest of russian armour.
On my own jagdpanzer IV I had to pin the shurzen (side armour plates) to make sure it would stand up to gaming (ab)use
cool
