A Paint set worthy of the Name!
August 5, 2010 by johnlyons
The Army Painter sent us this so we thought, lets make a video! who would have thought we would do that eh? Anyway this is a very good starter paint set that gives you plenty of stuff to tinker with and experiment til your hearts desire.
Good tip on the primer, i have had real problems with white.
But i did find that if you spray it from a distance of around 12/16 inches it give a pretty cool slightly rough texture that i think works well on tanks etc.
Looks like a decent set. I’ve only recently started to look beyond Citadel for my painting needs, I think this box might be a good way for me to evaluate Army Painter’s collection of colours.
I was looking into getting some of these so this vid has come in handy.I need to put a request in,i neeeed to see a picture of your tank ( the real one ) or a vid that would be great.
I would like to see the paint in pots so every last drop can be got at, other than that it looks like a good starter kit.
I find pots to be too sloppy. Dropper bottles let me control the amounts used, which is handy when thinning and trying to get a proper color mix.
I haven’t painted in years, but how well do the AP paints mix?
Granted you have a limited supply with the small bottles, but I am thinking you could easily get a few more shades/hues out of this set, especially with a dropper.
Ive never found pots to be sloppy, i guess its just down to technique and preference.
I dislike the AP primer, but I still use them because of the wide range of colours that are available. Haven’t tried the regular paints, myabe I try them out in the near future.
It looks like an intresting set. One thing that I would have liked to have seen in the set was a couple of models to practice on. I’d be leary about trying out a new paint on my expensive models and would rather have a test sample. Kinda like the citidel starter sets.
Mantic puts out a Kings of War paint set with Army Painter paints and 3 Mantic sprues with two minis each and a brush.
Are the paints still re-labelled Vallejo paints, because I think they at least used to be!
In my opinion, paint starter kits in general are horrible. The paints that come in them are so varied and basic that not much of anything can be painted to completion using them.
Granted this one comes with primer and that’s certainly a bonus, but Army Painter primer is a love it / hate it primer and I don’t care for it, personally.
Well that’s the point od starter kits, they give you the basics so you can start simple and eventually improve your painting skills. I’d say you probably can complete alot with the paints, especially space marines for which you only need metal aand a few other basic colours.
As for the primer I completely agree with you there. I’ve used it once and since then I havn’t touched it.
It looks like a good starter set, like something you can buy to someone that is starting up, a gift maybe? Or a quick way to re-stock some basics.
I think the colors included are fine (10 colors and the primer look pretty good to me), maybe one more brush?
Anyway seems like a good start, and i guess that you can easily finish something by acquiring 2-3 colors more.
It does look like a pretty good set.
I lost all my paints after a move so I’ve not painted anything in a rediculously long time something like this would probably be a good place to start getting back into it, maybe backed up by a Vallejo set with lots of browns, green, greys…one of the WW2 sets.
Type in t video description on http://www.beastsofwar.com/
“so we though, lets make a video!”
I thought there would be a cup of T with this video but apparently not
it would be nice to see a painting video comparing these to other paint sets all making the same army, e.g ultramarines.
But it has made me interested in looking at the army painter sets.
And knowing army painter its going to be expensive,
its a good set but you can find other sets that do for a lot less cost
I would be a little more impressed if they included a wash or two, say black for shading and a brown to shade the face.
You never say how much these are
Good point
that’s because its army painter, expect a high price
Thats no excuse not to quote a price for products
Yeah, im starting to move away from Citadel paints to.. Living in Australia though its hard to find substitutes. Tamicolour is down here however i don’t like there paint to much. I’d much prefer the Valeijo Paints.. there’s an ebay store with the set of them from the UK.. I bought my army painter brushes from there.. Might be time to invest in some Val paint i think.. I’ve seen alot of vids and tuts that use them.
fantastic range of colors. ashame it dosnt come with a fine brush
I think the colours should have more specific names….and that’s it.
looks like a nice set. I would like maybe three or so more colors, but you cant always get everything you want I guess.
i’m using their primers and varnishes and both are top notch!
~P~
They don’t quote prices because prices change too quickly – better to review the product then you can search for the price on your online supplier’s page 🙂
Can anyone review the coloured primers?
they are a good quality, I’ve worked with them, and as john said using the primer is scarey, another thing about the primers is they have a fair amount of pigment so you don’t need too much either, most of the spray is other chemicals that evaporate quickly
Great quality, and a reasonable price considering
I’ve used a couple of the different brown primers. They have a strange gritty looking texture which was kinda worrying initially, but I actually really like it now. They are great when you finally start painting over them, the texture seems to add to this, and when the model is complete none of the grittiness is present/visible.
John seems to be a bit at loss for words here… as it’s basically what it says on the box, a primer, some colors and 2 brushes 😉 I would like them to include a sprue of a test-mini of sorts so you could try before ruining your “good models”. Anyway, what are their colors like? Will there be an indepth-video about them at some point? I’d like to know if they “feel” like Vallejo, GW, P3, Coat d’arms or Foundry Colors. If their tones are “compatible” with other ranges or if the shades of color are different to any… Read more »
I miss my worm purple 😛
Nice started set. But on a slightly different topic. The write up said that Army painter sent this to you. This makes me wonder.
Dose GW ever send you any of their stuff?
