i may have been very lucky but so far haven’t had any real problems with finecast. Lilith hesparax was a bit fiddly to clean up and prep but that’s all i can complain about.
As for the overlord… how cool, i really fancy starting a new 40k army and am now seriously leaning towards crons though will need to nosey at the codex first but all the new stuff looks great.
I can fix the warscythe with a little hot water… I’m more concerned with all those bubbles and holes…
Perhaps I’ll show you how to fix them using Humbrol Liquid Filler.
The holes in his cape are there in the GW 360 degree example model too. They’re part of the sculpt.
Odd decision in a way, considering how many people are complaining about bubbles in finecast. You’d think the sculptors would be trying to avoid bubble-like decay effects!
Yes, I noticed that as well… Except they don’t seem to be in the same places on different models, and the cape looks much too jagged. I think they’re bubbles, but that they try to get away with some of them by pretending it’s “just sculpted that way”… I don’t really like the new necron lords (including the overlords) anyway, as, IMHO, they could really have applied themselves a little more on the regularity of the cape elements. The details don’t seem fine enough for resin… Not a fan of the headgear either. Quite frankly, the only thing I like… Read more »
Thats basically reason why I got Catacomb Command Barge/Annihilation Barhge as it comes with plastic Overlord so I don’t need to take risk with Failcost.
Also bitz sites, conversions with Lychguard (mix with Deathmarks to get Crypteks too), greenstuff for the skilled and as a last resort the metals through the magic of Ebay.
If it’s faulty take it back otherwise they’ll never fix the underlying problem.
metal is a pain i rly dislike using it i havnt had any problems with it yet and i do belive in wd when finecast was out they said use hot water not boiling to bend the resin. gr8 video model looks gr8 just a shame the dislike for fine cast seeps though the whole vid
Remember, Darrell is a Necron fan and has been since their initial release.
When you’re emotionally invested, it’s hard to stay impartial. I would say it’s disappointment more than anything else.
i understand as have i i have played though the auto i lose necrons of the past and i can understand. but with fine cast its not going to change anything gw wont admit there wrong and take finecast away we can just hope it gets better i agree with the guy below if id have known before i wouldnt have got the finecast one id have got the command barge. im not by anymeans a fan of finecast other places do resin far better i dont want metal back but dont rly want finecast ether.
I would probaly Shell out the 33 or 35 bucks for a Command Barge just to have a Plastic Overlord… the only Resin modles Iv put to geather are my Tomb Stalkers and I wasnt to happy with the time it took to get one to geather then to see parts fall off
This model looks alot nicer than I had thought it would. Still, it’s resin and i’m really not a fan. Though, neither do I want metal back. Go all plastic is what I say. The plastics GW has been putting out in recent years looks fantastic. And Sarase brings up a good point. I’m more than willing to shell out cash for the command barge to get the plastic overlord. I may actually prefer the look of the command barge overlord to the resin one.
Nah, I agree Darrell, Finecast to me is crap, pewter all the way.
I even baught another Commander Shadowsun because I wanted a good solid one before they decide to ruin it.

Here you go Darrell, you can still give Malcolm a number….
Not of fan of the Finecast material, other company’s resin models are quite good.
Finecast is a bit crap though it sticks fine. Agree with some of the guys saying that you should get some free green stuff for repairs with each model you buy. Saying that though perhaps Darrell should be given some to patch up that huge chip he has on his shoulder about finecast!!!! lol
Yes Darrell, continue the Finecast hatred! Good unboxing, but jesus do those finecast come with a tooooooon of crap on them. 🙂
This why I try to get metal grey knights. That finecast, p.o.s to me. Give me back my metal!
Ah shame, I just gave a couple of squads of metal Grey Knights away with the guard army i sold recently. 🙁
you seem a littel disepointed and frustrated because the new necs are a bunch of @!$@$#. but i think that the nec ovrelord loks nicer than he sems to be. just cut out the pages of fluff out and fill them with 0 and 1. it just feels better
and a general rule question. in the rulebook says that everything that the model has have too be seen. but it dosent say that everything that the model dosent have have to be not on the model. so wy cant you just say that somtimes the overlord has the orb of resurakion and somtimes his fanci lucking boling ball. (i meen it would fit with the fluff
Over all I don’t this it’s a bad model. I think the only part I don’t like is the head dress. I think he has Gundam envy.
My god the levels of Butthurt in this video is astounding. My advice is if you don’t like the stuff then don’t write a review about it and leave it up to someone who doesn’t mind. “BWAAAAAAAH FINE CAST BWAAAAAAAH” I learned nothing about the actual model or rules of fluff on this guy. What the hell was the point of the video?
You guys need to step it up because I really do love listening to your reviews when they’re more than just assburn about the material something’s made out of.
Oh dear. This was only an unboxing, so is supposed to be the reviewers opinion of the models quality and sculpt. Generally, in depth videos are named as such, but ill give you a quick run down without even reading the new codex.
Necron Overlord: Pretty much same stat line and equipment choices, wears a fancy cloak now, is a bit chattier than he used to be.
@beardicus … are you suggesting we should ignore the flaws in the model’s casting? The same flaws the manufacturer admits are there. So much so that they even sell a remedial product to repair the flawed original purchase.
There is a separate video filmed discussing the rules of the Overlord… this is a look at the overlord model.
I believe the term the Overlords use for their posse is a Harem of Necron Lords?
It’s a shame that the material is warped and full of holes because I think the sculpt, and the detail on the rest of it, look really good. Also it has enough flash there to defeat Ming the Merciless.
It must upset the sculpters to see all their hard work produced in what is still a poor quality product and as a result limited appeal. Would have thought by now they would have worked out what is going wrong and fixed it. I’ve only got one finecast and when I started to sand back the mould lines up pops too many bubbles almost like foam. As much as I like the new necron models I would only go that route if everything was avaiable in plastic (or metal) as until the fix things it’s no finecast for me and… Read more »
Yes, the sculptors must be heartbroken… Even though some of the pieces are pretty much alimentary work. I mean, it’s just necrons… They didn’t sculpt the thing from scratch !
To fix some of the bends you could always dip the part into some warm water for about 30 seconds or till it becomes a little more flexible and straighten it out.
I ordered some Tyranid Swarmlord Boneswords and had to do it and it worked perfectly. Haven’t tried it with the fine cast stuff yet though.
I’m not an expert on resin casting but I’d say the problems with bending come from the models being removed from the moulds too quickly, before the resin is fully cured, yes it might be set but there’s still molecular stuff going on in the plastic, and it gets bent then the molecular stuff says “okay that’s the shape then is it?” and sets it like that which is why the straitened bits bend right back when they get a little bit warm- the resin has memory ingrained into it by all the little crystal things that form when it… Read more »
For me, I think the best way to represent the HQ choices seems to be to use a mixture of the new plastic kits together , the sniper type heads would represent a cryptek well, and you get a spare cloak with the command barge, so , I may be wrong here, but it seems to me you could make a decent overlord and retinue without going near finecast.
And for what its worth, I think avoiding finecast is a very worthwhile exercise, its really not very good at all.
I hate finecast sooooo bad…….. that necron in metal…… thats how supposed to be!!!
Even the 360 degrees model that they have on the GW page r warp!!!! finecast su@#$%^
Not that big on the model, its alright but I think I’d rather the plastic lord from the barge set.
Took me 2 minutes to straighten out my Overlord’s warscythe with some very warm water from the tap and then an ice bath for another 20-30 seconds to set it again…stop the complaining…
