Unboxing: Bolt Action’s M21 Mortar Carrier Half-Track
December 29, 2015 by dignity
We're back into historical games again and John couldn't be more excited! Today we're taking a look at Bolt Action's M21 Mortar (not motor, John) Carrier Half-Track from Warlord Games.
This little vehicle was perfect for transporting heavy arms and with those tiny models, we're anticipating a little panic on the drive!
What do you think of this model?
That’s a really nice kit! Huge envy from a Brit player (who doesn’t get these things, damnit)
wasn’t there a Hanomag version that the germans Had??
Yep, one with an 81mm mortar and in the same vein one were they bolted nebelwerfer rockets to the sides.
Sweet!
Curious how players would utilize this best. I used it once (proxy with a standard half track) and I think I used the rear facing version because I turned it around on turn 1 and left it there to fire the rest of the game. It did ok, but I’m sure I didn’t use it to its potential (or the one game didn’t present the right circumstances). Thanks
Good to “see” you again, @mc1gamer – and good to see historicals back on unboxings. Closest I’ve gotten to use a tracked mortar carrier like this is the M113/120 or /81mms in Arab-Israeli Wars. Very handy for following the tanks around and dropping smoke screens when the tanks need them to protect an advance vs. Sagger missiles or the like. In World War II games like Panzer Leader, I usually use mortars with MG sections to pin down an enemy, then close-assault with rifle platoons mixed with engineers. Even an 81mm mortar is very handy at providing just that last… Read more »
Also the rapid redeployment once counter fire is put down
Nice kit but didnt we Brits have Universal Carriers instead with mortars?
Yup carried a 3″ mortar
Looks like a nice kit . Just wish all resin kits had the vehicle crew stowage , packs , tarps , gas cans , etc as separate pieces . I would rather detail the vehicle my own way as opposed to having it look the same as every other kit out there . As an example , check out the Shermans in Fury . They all had , for the most part , the same stowage , but arranged by each crew as suited their needs .
The appeal of this vehicle may be limited.
If the opponent has a mortar (or similar indirect fire threat) of their own then it might be worth the extra points, because you can at least move a significant bit.
If he doesn’t then why waste the points ?
The only option I can think of is that the mobility allows you to bring in your mortar crew from reserve and still allow them to get in a decent position in a single turn.
Nice looking kit. I’d have to remove that giant pistol just sat on the side though.
I doubt you’ll see many of these in games, due to taking up the armour slot, but a nice addition to your army.
In a standard game I probably wouldn’t use this as I am rather fond of tanks. In a game of Tank war a section of these could come in rather handy. Either way it looks to be a nice kit and I will pick up at least one of them more than likely three 🙂
