Too many Kids? The Thousand Sons!
August 31, 2010 by johnlyons
John takes a look at his favourite chaos troops choice. The Thousand Sons. This box set is a hybrid kit of metal and plastic parts that create these legendary guys who have a book in the Horus Herersy novel series!

I’m currently in the middle of painting up my first thousand sons squad, and when i opened this kit up i was suprised at how epic looking these guys actually were! the thousand sons are pretty much the coolest unit a chaos army can have!
exept for their termies 🙂 ’cause termies are just awesome
hi def ?
really like the look and have always liked the look of the thousand Sons.
Its a pity GW have not released a plastic kit for this, given how nice the accesories and details have been with the likes of the BA death company box set i think they could do something quite special
I always like to do dynamic poses when it comes to unit sargents and champions but the Aspiring Sorc does look like its showing its age and the pose looks wrather rigid but as john says…its an aging kit
Loving the fluff 😀
Nice review. But the Rubicon is a river in Italy. Caesar crossed it with his legions, starting the Roman Civil War against Pompey.
Ahriman cast the Rubric.
/pedant off 🙂
I’m pretty sure you get 9 in the box, 8 plastic/metal mixed and then the Sorcerer model, what with 9 being the sacred number of Tzeentch ‘n’ all. The Thousand Sons do really have the best background of all the marines, both Loyal and Traitor. They were actually one of the most loyal legions but were cast out and pretty much betrayed by the Emperor which really left them no choice but to scatter and turn to chaos. Then their story just goes from bad to worse with the Rubric, well bad for the basic marines at least, the full… Read more »
Cant wait to read Prospero Burns..(even though that sounds like a Simpsons character)..it’ll probably be the final deciding factor as to weather or not I start a Thousand Sons army
This is one of my favourite legions alongside the Iron warriors and word bearers. Like the fluff bit, should do that more often. The thousands sons story is tragic but in the new fluff, they weren’t betrayed by Emperor, it was by a certain primarch who gave russ different orders to what the empy wanted.
With the kits, they are nice but now getting on like the chaos dreadnaught. I was finding i was having to use a lot of greenstuff just to get the parts to fit right. Wish they would bring these to plastic.
Urgh why can’t GW just stop messing with their background usually for the worst.
GW didn’t change anything, they just explained exactly what happened. The Thousand Sons story has always been one of tragic misunderstanding and mistrust.
The old background explained “exactly what happened” fine, the Emperor ignored Magnus’ warning, realised his his rules had been broken so unleashed the Space Wolves on the Thousand Sons to destroy them.
So yes GW DID change something.
I reckon GW should start making dedicated plastic models (much like they did with Blood Angels and Space Wolves) or upgrade sprues (Dark Angels and Black Templars) for the specific Traitor legions like they’ve done with the Loyalists. I much prefer working in plastic and its much better value for the consumer. Plus it encourages conversions and creativity.
Saying that, I really like these models. Yeah the moulds are beginning to show their age now with some heavy flashing and other problems, but with a bit of work this unit looks great on the table.
Unfortunately, Thousand Sons have so much going against them, fielding them is pretty much restricted to for-fun games only (unless you go all 1K themed only). No frag or Krak grenades, Slow and purposeful, The Sorcerer Commands, no CC weapon/pistol back-up weapons like other cult troops, and the fact that you are required to buy a not-cheap sorcerer power. AP 3 bolter rounds are nice, but there are enough cover saves to negate this to a great degree. Giving the 1K Sons back their two wounds would negate a lot of this. Flavorful and fun, sure…competitive and cost efficient compared… Read more »
I want to make an army out of thousand sons or pleague bearers! great job guys! my only suggestion is MORE VIDEOS!!!!!! 🙂
I hate how the new codex’s got rid of the rivalry fluff, like the DA and Thousand Sons special rules against the SW 🙂
has the fluff changed with the Thousand sons to any great degree? or have GW just filled it out more especially with the HH novel ”thousnad sons” i wasnt aware of any major changes mind you i havnt read any of the previous Chaos codex’s for reference so i cant compare.
All ive known nhas been geathered through other books or through whitedwarf articles down the years…upto the book of graham mcneil ofc.
I got the Thousand Sons and Plagure marines boxed sets lately, and I have been confused by the PMarines- are there more than 7 metal models and you get the Champ+ 6 random ones or are some of the PMs in the Codex conversion?
e.g. the guy with the skull head and cracked helm was not in my box… but he appears to be a production model???
Want to see Plague Marines unboxing!!!
yea plz can you do a plauge marine and noise marine unboxing….. pleeeeez 🙂
All that has changed with the thousand sons fluff is, in the old fluff Magnus tried to warn the emperor about Horus using his pysker powers and the emperor ordered the Russ to destroy the sons. The updated version is that the Emperor ordered Horus to bring Magnus in for questioning, but horus then persuaded Russ to wipe out the sons and thus forcing them to turn to Tzeentch. So nothing overly major has changed. It does get annoying though when GW change something and ignore some of the other fluff. Would be nice if GW would release a thousand… Read more »
Yea i’d love to see PMs unboxing, would clear up whether some of the PMs are conversions or if they simply have more than 7 possible production models.
@dalekseth – yea, would B nice but they seem to be doing those over on forgeworld where its resin… not that im sure the tad more detail is worth paying 2xs as much, I think their conversion kits would be better served as bitz packs on GW rather than conversion kits on FW, the higher detail is pointless when the legs/arms are not the same! :s
I’ll probably get more neg karma for, shock horror, having an opinion, but for me the actions of the Emperor and Russ and their treatment of the Thousand Sons was one of the best examples of how brutal, violent and evil those founding and controling the Imperium could be even to their own son or brother. It was an important piece of the Imperial backstory for me. To have it replaced by “mean tainted Horus did it all, the Emperor just wanted to send Magnus to his room without dinner” just strikes me as an attempt to make the Emperor… Read more »
just orderd mine first squad gonna use them as pre-heresy thousand sons any good tips to get rid of the chaos stuff? 😛
