That price is flat out disgusting simple as that.

For those who do not know “Instant Mold” is simply a re-branding of a Japanese product called Oyumaru.

Oyumaru can be bought in the UK for around £5 for SEVEN sticks making it a quarter of the price of Instant Mold for the exact same product.

The only difference is that Oyumaru generally comes in a mixture of colours, as it is often marketed as a children’s toy, but it is still transparent and it isn’t like you need to see through a mould anyway.

It’s sort of expensive for teh quantity… But you only need one pack !
You can re-use it ad-infinitum, just put it in hot water again…
It works very well with green stuff (which is pleasantly flexible once dried, and just pops right out of the mold), for reproducing armor pieces, ornaments and such, and making them “en masse” to glue to other minis to have a unified theme to an army.

Its pretty good stuff, as you said works great with GS, tried using it on some milliput and it damaged the compound (the were flecks of milliput stuck in part of the compound and that section took much longer to soften than the rest).

I like the idea behind it, though I’ve not used it myself but I think one of the other selling points is that it is reusable, so if you don’t like the mould or want to make a fresh mould just heat it up and start again, genius.

Your problem is getting the larger lump up to the right tempreture and then manipulating it afterward.

Darrell has made a two-part mould from this stuff… hopefully he’ll be making a video on it soon.

Darrel’s Barrel’s ! love it. It’s useful stuff I think – but not good for casting miniatures or more complex stuff, at least not inless your a pro with that kind of thing. I found it useful for casting terrain pieces and more simple 1-piece moulds though. Used it to make the evil black hatches, book shelves and artefacts for terrain for my Yithian/Flying polyp skirmishs.

This product seems ok but will not work on any sculpts or models made in soft materials, ie plastiscene or sculptors wax, the heat and pressure would affect the model, I would also be concerned about using resins to cast as these can become quite hot and will probably distort the mould. This type of moulding is quite crude but would be helpful to moulding small items. I think there could also be issues around air bubbles which will result in alot lot of filling and cleaning up time. Thanks @bishmeister. How to build a vacuum chamber for casting would be good to know, as would practical recommendations on different types of materials for casting. There are quite a few different types on the market and it’s not always easy to find info on how to pick the most appropriate type.

Have used a two part resin from the car parts shop Iy does get hot if there is a big mass. Have had it start going off, and a big lump in the container heats up. However, the small amounts poured into the mould seem to stay cool. Assume any heat from the raction is dissipated rapidly, or there is not enough mass to generate heat in the first place. You can also use it to make larger two part moulds in the same way you would use latex/plastic moulds, it is less durable though so best only if you want to cast a couple of pieces. That´s right. Got a pack of 6 stripes of Oyumaru for half the price, so the “charged 4 times” is spot on. If you have a hobby store in your town (even one for crochet, broidery etc) go ask them if they can get it for you. Bigger Toys R Us stores might have them as well, in the the plastic jewelry section… 🙂

I have found that instantmold works really well for one part molds but making a decent 2 part mold out of this stuff in verry tricky not inpossable just verry hard it took me about 4 attempts before I had madedged to make a decent mold and even then like darrel said it is hard to allign the mold again so overall I have found it really usefull but like all things it has its limitations

The best trick for aligning 2 part moulds of this sort I have seen is to take a couple of Lego bricks and push them top down into the first part of the mould at opposite corners, or all the corners if you want to be very sure.

When that has set you can take the piece of Lego out and it leaves a nice little Lego shape in the mould so when you come to put the second part of the mould on top it goes into that and creates a lock of sorts.

Another thing you can do for aligning is to use your wife/girlfriend/moms old compact case for make up. Of course they need to be somewhat thin items you are doing. But you put the insta-mold on each side, put your item in, and the close it. You just need to mark where the mold is on the case with a marker or something so you can position it in the case every time or just use blue tack to keep in in place.

It’s a great product. I have used it to make copies of chaos lightning claws, chaos meltaguns, terminator cloaks, thunder hammers, storm shields, some blood angels melta weapons, chaos dreadnought sarcophagus, shoulder pads… and more. It makes it a lot easier to have a WYSIWYG army when you don’t have to but x# of box sets to only get a weapon that you need that bit selling sites are selling for 1/2 the cost of the whole box set.
