The Imperial Guard Basilisk Unboxed
January 26, 2011 by dignity
I thought I would take out a Basilisk to un-box, this is one of the heavy hitters for the Imeprial Guard, but what would you take?

I’m specing up a krieg list now and want lots of arty – but don’t like these at all. Minimum range is terrible. I play against lots of fast armies and be lucky to get 2 rounds of firing out to it. Medusa all day.
It can fire directly as well as per ordnance rules.
You can choose to fire ordnance barrage directly, in which case it is treated like a normal ordnance weapon whilst ignoring it’s minimum range. This does mean you lose out on the awesome barrage rules though.
I also would like to point out that the sprues do not come with a hull heavy bolter, which is the default hull weapon for the basilisk in the codex.
They are great on a big table when they have the distance between them and the enemy. But when the enemy is starting 48″ away they pretty much need LOS. Not to mention they are going to get shot up like crazy. If you can start a good distance away they are awesome.
Can you really ignore the minimum range if not firing indirectly? I’ve not seen that in the rules?
However, if that were possible I’d happily get three of these blighters. Anything to terrorise the nid hordes (as if sixty las guns isn’t enough).
I should have included the page number in my comment. It is on page 58 of the rulebook, where ordnance barrage is explained.
the peice you didnt know anything about goes under the platform where the plate with the hook is. it closes the empty space.
the comments i made on my unboxing for this still stand, Not worth the money, your paying more for less over the last version of the kit. Thanks GW for being complete idiots.
I have to say that other than the lack of crew members I prefer this model to the old one. The track assembly is far easier to put together (the old ones took me around fifteen to twenty minutes each, while on this model I had everything other than the weapon platform built in that time) and I like the slightly slimmer side armour more too. I do wish it had come with some other options though – especially the option for a griffin (I love those things). Apart from the leman russ, I think the basilisk is one of… Read more »
Criticism of the build: you used the back plate meant for chimeras, the rucksacks on the right are upside down and you seem to have lines up the notches that hold the tracks in place wrong. As for the actual model I’m on John’s side for this, back in the day (2nd edition) the basilisk had a blister with metal crew as an extra, then they took ’em out and sold it separately. The shell was far to small to be an earth-saker round to be honest and they really look out of place in a modern guard army now,… Read more »
I have 3 of the old set for my guards arty requirements, and I utterly hate the old track segments (anybody who did a leman russ knows they didn’t even fit) so at least they sorted that even if they rip you of on other parts.
To sort the lack of the second guy I’d just buy one of the £5 cadian troop sets for multiple kits and glue one of those on the back and imagine the gunner has had to pick up his lasgun for some reason
Good plan man, did you have to do that with any other kist from GW?

The only kits you need another kit to complete are Eldar storm guardians(you get 8 guardians with 6 pistol and CCW sets and 2 special weapons in each box minimum unit is 10 with two specials maximum…) and other imperial guard kits- the imperial guard infantry were also “newly re-released” at the same time as the basilisk and the Cadian mould was actually re-cut with rumours of getting melta guns etc in the box at the time, what happened? The gate on the head with the chin strip open was moved off the strap and onto his chin. I have… Read more »

Sorry but I don’t see any reason doing the same sth twice
We decided to do this again, because Justin has a different take on the model. We’re also updating our videos to conform to the new What’s in the Box format, with the added tactical details.

Will you be doing some unboxing for WFB? It’s been ages since the last one for WFB. There was the Island of Blood, new Skaven releases lately and the upcoming Orcs and Goblins. A look on Warhammer Invasion would also be nice so that more people would know about it.
Ive used my two baselisks a lot, tho they are of the older versions, i still love them, tho im going to build hard tops over the loaders and breach whit plasticard, hust to make it a bit harder to get rid of, and to make it look cooler, kind of like some of the modern mobile artilery…
