It’s D-Day! Let the Battle for France Commence
December 3, 2010 by dignity
Hot off the presses... Karl and Andy take a look at the brand new books from the good people at Flames of War... the D Day Battle for France Compilation.
This set contains the two books Turning the Tide and Earth & Steel.

Glad to see you guys have not forgotten about FOW. Agood presentation and I look forward to seeing more, will defo be buying this set.
Right before the start, the first people there were Royal Engineers, two of them, at night, avoiding the searchlights with the whole Nazi defence ready to kill them, who combed the beach taking sand samples and cataloging the samples, so when they planned it, they’d know where it was safe for vehicles to land, because on some parts of the beach they’d’ve just sunk into the sand.
Yeah, but it wuld be pretty boring to do that in a game of FoW
Looking forward to this, it will be very handy to have all the previous material in one place.
I really like the fact that the Axis and Allies have seperate books and it will be great checking out the new lists.
Cant wait to see the rest of the vids.
I knew FOW would be doing D-day at some point but I can’t help but wonder when will they start the pacific war.
Battle Front did D-Day years ago (2006 from memory), this is simply a re-release that brings the older army lists up to date.
As for the Pacific, that has been a question that has been thrust in BFs face for quite some time. Somewhat off the topic, but Great Escape Games have recently published force rosters for the Imperial Japanese Army and US Marine Corp for their Rules of Engagement system….I say off topic as it is 28mm.
No offence guys but I miss Johns history lessons with Flames of war and his funny discussions with warren.
In accordance with the topic… A moi aussi, les leçons d’Histoire de John me manquent ! Que lui est-il arrivé ?
I agree. I miss Johns history snippits as well.
£60 for two books is a little too rich for me.
Really? GW charge more than that every day of the week. Just remember that both books are hardcovers. So far (touch wood) none of the hardcover books I have from BF have fallen apart (something I cannot say for any GW book I have purchased). One thing you need to consider in the cost is unlike a total fictional production like what GW or Privateer Press produce, Battle Front actually have to RESEARCH their stuff. While it is still a game, it is one that is fully grounded in historical events and the details in these books need to be… Read more »
Then they need to research harder, there’s a few basic howlers on the models.
Aye, GW are dear but you really don’t need to spend £95 retail just for the books to play a specific list. I think BF are really just as bad as GW at pricing, if not worse. Nearing £50 for a five tank boxed set is unbelievable.
You should research harder…..I am trying to work out just which box of tanks costs £50. The dearest 5 tank box set that Battle Front do is the Tigers Marsch set, which has a retail of £48, but I have not been able to find anyone that sells it for anything more than £44. From there the prices drop sharply for sets like the Panther A platoon, the IS-2 Company and the ISU-152 company sets all selling for £41 retail…again everyone I looked at seems to be selling for £37. The vast majority of tank sets: Panzer VI H, StuG… Read more »
I wouldn’t know since I don’t play GW games outside WAB. £48 is “nearing £50” last time I did the maths and saving four quid still has them being too expensive. I can’t see how the Tigers are any different to GW pricing since they’re they’ve not got anything in the set that would cost greatly more than say the panther box. The only thing I can see is their usefulness in the game. FoW is far from being a cheap game to play unless you go for other producers models and neither is GW but lets not pretend that… Read more »
To be fair there is a lot of history to cover in those 2 books, an overview of the books or a mini documentary? Rest assured unboxings will continue to have a bit more history than in the above video.
While I am looking forward to seeing some of the new lists for both sides of the war in these books, I must admit that an updated version of the Panzer Lehr list has me dying to get these books. Hell, I have even started to consider buying some more 251/1Ds in anticipation…..although at last count the 28 I already have should be enough!
While I will likely NEVER play an allied list, I do enjoy simply reading all of the stuff they produce…so the twin set for me.
Looks really good, although I miss John’s history lessons.
Any historical questions you guys have, please feel free to message me 🙂 It’s been great handing out advice to you lot if any of you are stuck on something or just want a chat 😀
You’re a lovely chap, John!
hi guys can anyone tell me if one of the book will fit into the flames of war bag by battle foam???
I’ll see if I can get my mate to check it out. Part of the reason I never went with the ‘branded’ bag from Battle Foam was that I felt it was too restrictive and a little too generic in what it was able to take. Going off memory, most of the pocket on that bag are rather tight, the side pocket for the dice tin being the one we always laugh at…..almost make you reach for the butter! In the end I spent the time and got a PACK 720 custom layout. I can fit the hardcover rule book… Read more »
Maybe I should try to put the big rule book in the bag and see if it fits
I think Karl and Andy had just the right amount of historical bits mixed into the two videos introducing these books and the army lists.
Used to play a lot of 1/300th ww2 – the one issue I always had was that many lists didn’t reflect history too well.
For example – I normally played allies and always seem to face the complete production run of jagdpanthers and/or royal tigers…
Or the rule of thumb that it took 4-5 shermans to kill one panther/tiger never seemed to work out, I always out numbered the german armour but not by those figures…
Does flames make lists that are more historically correct?
aaahh, the beautiful bren carrier!
