It does mostly what its supposed to- it’ll never fit on my lap and even for folk it will I don’t think It would be straight enough to put water or open pots on it- but its the same price as almost any plastic troop box set or transport, its only a quid shy of a bike squadron, the number of people that have decided they can use yesterday’s Evening Times or an old tea tray for another week or so must be pretty high.
I made something way better then this and I only spent about $10 and it holds over 100 paints. Top that gw.
you sound as if you think GW could actually offer a fair price for something…
(which won’t be happening any time soon unfortunately…)
any way…
I just have an old wrecked desk I paint at,
I can’t really see any reason to buy something like this.
I do know that GW never sells anything at a fair price. I just don’t see why they are selling this.
I did the same, made mine out of a $4 sheet of plywood, it also has a shelf in the back for even more space. and another $4 for can of varnish for a nice clear coat, easy wipe up and whatnot.
FIT IN BUNG AND WTF UR TOLD!!!11!
love it 🙂
I still have and use the citadel one made of MDF from the 90’s. Its held up fairly well over the years. Granted one side piece went missing in a move and I had to wood glue some scraps to replace it but I continue to get good use from it.
This new one looks… well honestly like a cheap dollar bin product that they will charge a premium for.
£20.50……… £20.50!!!! for that?! I’m not going to go on a rant because I know I would be preaching to the choir but that is some mental over pricing. This has made my top five of redunculously priced products, right up there with the apple official USB cable for £30.
u us it for just one army at a time to paint and it works really well . the pots do a grate job holding ur paint brushes in wotter but high so it dont bend the brisals . i used it to paint my space wolves army and now i am painting my nids army so it works good . u can get a cutting try that fits on to it to so u can use it for conversions two and not cut yourself .
its crap i still have the old paintstationthe mdf one had it 6 years beter than this rubbish
i use my desk that i ahve in my room. Simple as. I don’t see the poitn of having one of these unless you can’t be bothered to move soemthign fo your desk then set up your minis and prjoects there. i find it a lot easier. though i see this as beign useful if you are away from your hosue but yous till want to paint (not like a holiday btu work or something).
I lik the MDF version better. The MDF work surface is natural wood and reflects light to help you see what your painting. The MDF can also be lightly sanded to clear off any excess paint. The MDF sits flat on a table and allows you to rest your arms/wrists on the table when holding your minis. The MDF water pot holder is several inches deep – you won’t knock over your water. The MDF top has a built in spill trough to prevent spilled paint from runnign off the surface. The MDF can be lightly sanded to clean the… Read more »
this is totally useless for me If i even got one for free I would break it and use it for something else.
After watching Darrel be so clearly impressed and enthusiastic in this review I am starting to think he lost a bet and this was the punishment
Maybe bumming this up was how he got GW to give him the Grey Knights…
I did not like this tray. My only thought is that I must have been in a VERY VERY good mood when I reviewed it. I would not swap it for my homemade wooden tray any day
Fair enough chief :p
you forgot to mention that the space between the water pot holders actually fits the citadel cutting mat, near perfectly
everybody needs to stop being so cheap. you’re also paying for the back-story behind plastic-lap-boards.
it’s the IP that we’re all paying for…
hehe
back story?
Have heard of fluffy dice but not a fluffy painting station before! lol
Some how I think they are missing the point. This tray is for modelling either on the move or sat in your favourite armchair, not to replace your workstation. I have both trays and they compliment one another nicey. I have the moulded cutting mat and the water tub brush holders. I haven’t painted a model yet that required more than seventeen different paints and I tend to follow the BoW 3 up painting tutorials so again no problem. The tray is well constructed. At £20 it’s a bit steep but it’s built to last. Can’t understand how people can… Read more »
Surprisingly…
if people don’t like something they are usually highly unlikely to cough up the cash for it 😉
I agree that it is meant to be portable.
It would have been better if it had a strap that goes around your neck like the trays the ushers used to have in the cinema.
You could sell matches from it and paint minis on the street corner at the same time.
I think this is just a gimmick to sell to new hobbyists. How many parents have I seen go in with their kids and get sold a starter box and some paints and brushes. This is just the next step to seal the deal.
Well, as has been said by plenty of people above I too prefer the original one. I have one, it’s very useful, but I wont be replacing it with this.
I actually have difficulty finding room to paint my models. Could this be the answer? Barring the cost, o’course.
Hey sukura
The idea of this tray is just that. It’s small, light weight and it made to be portable. Load it with a few paints and essential tools and your away. It means you can model pretty much anywhere. The larger, heavier mdf tray is great at your workstation. I don’t have a workstation so mine gets used everyday and when aim finished it sits neatly out of the way. It is a one off purchase and I think it’s worth having but again it ain’t compusary.
Anyone have any links to pictures of a better paint stations? Home-brew or for purchase? I was toying with the idea of making own, but I’d like to see what some other people have done or what they think makes a good paint station.
I find all you really need is some layers of hieght for your paints. Desk space does the rest: So look through your surroundings for old boxes, offcuts of wood etc, then put them to the back of your desk. then you got a raised layer for visual paint displays.
I use mantic boxes, leaving the last one open to throw tools into.
Forcing yourself into one little tray of space will only damage your quality of painting and tooling.
Looks better in the video than it does in a picture on the website, fairly chunky plastic. Doesn’t look big enough. I’m with the others here though that prefer the previous mdf edition. I got mine after Jervis gave it a bump in one of his standard bearer articles, until then I had been using newspaper and my toolbox full of hobby supplies. Jervis was spot on, you can load it up with a ton of paints, tools and minis, paint away on the coffee table while she’s watching whatever pish on the telly and then the whole lot can… Read more »
i have seen a desk that was designed for this hobby that was $75 USD and was made for those who are perhaps a bit to into the hobby. IMHO i view this as a good item for a beginner or someone who doesn’t have a lot of space as is the case with most younger gamers
again this site needs an edit post button… anyway the one person i know who bought this advocates that if you play warmachine you get it as it is the perfect size for painting assembly line style when used in conjunction with a small table or such. how they use it is they have the water pot and a crap load of the empty pots from citadel with their own blended paints and washes into those with a ball bearing in it. from what i have seen it is fairly efficient but slightly costly
What’s wrong with a bit of plywood?
I’ve been using an old placemat for years.
If you take care, keep your work station neat and have a routine you don’t need an expensive plastic widget!
Mind you… My wife would like to argue with my definition of neat. 😀
I have this, and I appreciate it greatly. I didn’t really feel much up to purchasing the supplies and working out the mathematics of building my own paint tray, ecspecially since I don’t have any experience with such projects. I’m not allowed to paint in my room; I have to paint downstairs. Everytime I want to paint, I have to take my paints from the third floor to the bottom floor, where I can set up a table with a tarp over it. Before, I took paints down in a cardboard lid, which did not have much room at all… Read more »
I think it’s a useless piece of junk. I shudder to think of the sloppy work you’d do on such a thing… Why would you limit the space available to you by putting that on your desk, and then putting your painting supplies onto it ? I mean, what could you possibly paint constrained in such a small workspace ? One or two basecoats and a wash, or – gasp – a dip… The horror… The horror… Painting with that thing on your knees, all bent in two, is going to destroy your vertebrae something fierce… That’s not serious painting… Read more »
I really like this for what it’s intended for, a makeshift paint station that travels with you or you can use when watching TV. I have a permanent desk that I use to store all my paints and what not, but if my wife wants to paint or I want to sit and watching TV while I work on my models, this is a great buy. Much better than the old MDF one and it’s a lot sturdier. 17 pots of paint is plenty to store when working on a single unit. I know there is a lot of hate… Read more »
