It's time for us to delve into another of the Dire Foes Box Sets and this time we're seeing Tohaa facing off against the sinister Combined Army! I think there's been a bit of a viral outbreak so make sure you don't forget your Hazmat suit!!!
It’s part of the aesthetic of Infinity, which has drawn from Manga/anime and other sources, and has been a fundamental component of the game and universe since day 1. Unfortunately its something you either like, don’t like, or don’t care about. If it’s any consolation, a friend of mine feels exactly the same way but manages to ‘cherry pick’ (non-cheesecake pick?!) miniatures that have strong masculine or otherwise sexless proportions – characters with masks etc and there are some female miniatures which have less ‘pronounced’ proportions in the range, so it is possible to collect and play with other cool… Read more »
I’d like to see some alien looking aliens in this game. Since it has an anime style, something along the lines of the Angels from Evangelion would definitely be what would definitely get me into this game. Tastes aside, Infinity always has an extremely high standard to it’s sculpting and these are no exception.
Yeah, I looked at them before but they were all Unalien looking as in humanoid sillohetes with 2 arms and 2 legs and the Toha stuff looks to be all humanoid too. The combined army drones seemed to be the only non-humanoid and alien-ish looking creatures I can find unless I am missing something (?), and they are Okay but nothing that makes me want to lay down cash :/
I’m not sure what your experiences with metal are (and in what context you got your fingers burnt) but CB make some of the best metals I have ever seen. Really delicate bits and a good fit, I don’t even have to pin, just use a half-decent medium superglue.
I collected metal miniatures for many years, though admittedly I haven’t bought one since about 1990. My experience with metal minis is that after spending hours on a beautiful paint job, one careless drop results in a bent gun and chipped paint. I just don’t want to go there when there are so many beautiful plastic and resin minis on the market now. I’d even be willing to pay a bit extra for resin if it was available.
Ah I know what you mean, that’s a fair point. I use a good varnish (Vallejo matt or shine usually), and play with mine extensively – you do get the odd chip on a barrel end or some such like but for the most part they are OK.
I did read that they had demo games running with the actual studio miniatures at Gencon though, which does seem slightly nuts – I would have been terrifed to even touch them, let alone play a game!
I’ve looked on the model range here, I don’t know if that is all of them (?) : http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en/category/ca/ and the only non-humanoid aliens I could find there were a few “Drone” models by the looks of it, which are okay but don’t really do much for me and everything else I could find was humanoid. My favourite Angels were Shamshel, Ramiel, Gegheil, Sahaquiel, Leliel or especially Bardiel if that helps narrow things better so anything similar to those would be awesome, as id like to get into this game.
The thing is, that style is a fundamental part of the Infinity aesthetic, it’s part of the anime DNA that make up the game’s style. They could no sooner drop that completely than space marines lose their shoulder pads!
No issues with sexy miniatures here. It’s part of modern culture, so why should future humans able to transform themselves into cybernetic organisms not choose to go all sexy? May be less likely for aliens to adopt human standards on that, but there you go, it’s anime sci-fi. 😉 @BoW, please, please return to the good practice of additionally building the models and giving them a dark wash. Adds so much value to unboxing videos as one can actually see if parts fit easily and correctly, if a model is flawed by mold-lines and so forth. Shiny metal under close… Read more »
These articles pushed me into Infinity – well done, BoW.
Now I’d love to see a Romain-Special on how paint these boys and girls so they look at least a little bit like the models on the CB homepage.
Beautiful looking minis.
Great. More cheesecake with hip-breaking gawk-at-me-poses and barbie-proporitons.
Heinous.

Those look really great. I especially like the look they achieved with the Tohaa soldier, with her arm ammo band and chunky combat boots.

Perhaps the Combined Army is a little like what you’re looking for?

Sorry Corvus Belli, your miniatures are beautiful, I hear your game is very good, but I just don’t do metal. Offer them in resin and I’m there.

Yup, if you’re wary of metal Bow did an article 9th CBs minis:

Combined Army have at least one big model that screams “Evangelion” to me. They are pretty alien.
Love the cheesecake btw, every other company already caved in to whining and crying, nice to see CB ignore the moaners.

Indeed, if not build there is something missing.
Great Unboxing Justin, Cheers! 🙂
