Blood Angels Stormraven Unboxed
October 31, 2012 by darrell
Is it a bird is it a plane? Oh wait no its Darrell with the new Stormraven, finally it’s here and Darrell’s ready to give you the low down on this controversial kit that has had everyone talking.
Well now it’s time for you to get your say is it too ugly to be on a gaming table or is it just too useful to pass up?
My own opinion is yes it’s not what I thought it would be and I would have preferred that it looked more like a predator of the skies and not a box with wings.

Pity you glued the rear tail section round the wrong way 🙁
I just went and looked at it. Yeah it’s on the wrong way round LOL. Note to everyone if your building one it’s probably not a good idea to be watching football and having a beer at the same time 😉 That said It’s kind of cool on that way, Darrell might have actually improved the design! While on the subject I noticed that the side bolters go so far down that if shot forward the Stormraven will actually shoot it’s self it the side fender bits. Therefore it is my intention to always claim a cover save when they… Read more »
it looks like the rear tail section should be that way if you ask me, it seems to make more sense. But of course GW did it the other way soo…still if I got one I’d do it Darrell’s way!
I stuck it on that way to try to make a hideously ugly vehicle look slightly better.Sorry for trying to improve Games Workshop products
BTW Darrel the Multi-Meltas at 9:19 are Plasma Cannons but I like to think you were just testing us to see if we’re paying attention 😉
I think it looks better your way Darrell!
The turret upgrade is a plasma cannon, not multi melta, slight difference….
Other than that, good de boxing, looking forward to make one for my grey knights.
My god Its a Toaster with wings but without an ash tray!!!! the horror of it, GW think of those poor techmarines that smoke! I postive i spotted Dark Angel, Imperial fist and White scar transfers on that sheet. (yip i did) but none for the blue boy smurfs or space puppies, hmmmm wonder if the DAs, IFs & WS’s will be getting rules for this toaster? But i have to say i am getting fed up with the Blood poser angels, Grey knights and blue boy smurfs getting all the GW love. Wheres the Dark Angel love, infact where… Read more »
The transfer sheet is the standard GW space marine vehicle transfer sheet, so there’s a whole bunch of transfers on there that you wouldn’t use.
Have a bit of patience though, the Dark Angels will have their turn – just think back to 4th Ed where the Sons of Sanguinius were overlooked.
i was thinking of kit bashing this to make a thunderhawk . i think it would work grate for one of them .
im not sure how you would do it, maybe if you took a vlakyrie kit and combined the two
yeah like mdrake said its a plasma cannon. Also its 6 shots with the hurricane bolters, all twin linked. Not really a fan of this kit but as someone else said what else would it look like? It can’t really be sleek and streamlined its not eldar, its space marines it has to be blocky…
Darrell,
A missile is a guided weapon with moveable flight control surfaces that allow it to be flown into the target. A rocket lacks a guidance system and is more of a point, shoot, and hope it hits weapon.
Or to put it simply; a rocket is the one you actually have to aim.
i like it. looks like a helo. i want something big like that for my TAU.
There are other glues you can use to keep the clear plastic from fogging up, there’s more than plastic cement and super glue out there.
The best one to use is a high viscosity/gel “super glue”.
You get more control over the glue the “fogging” comes from the evaporation of glue that didn’t have anything to stick too. The high viscosity/gel only goes where you put it so there is very little run-off.
You could also try something like UHU, it’s pretty thick (and smelly and dangerous), but it takes ages to set.
BoW Andy
i just use the Testors red tube glue for all my clear plastic, very thick stuff and it has an impressive bond. Only downside is that since its a tube, sometimes more than what you want comes out.
OMG Im not the only person that knows what testor’s is!!!! I got sooooo sick of getting 1/10th of an ounce of super glue for $8. However, I like gale force nine’s glue also.
I use Humbrol Clearfix but that’s because I came to the hobby side from Air Fix kits.
PVA Glue does not fog clear plastic 🙂
Yeah its not pretty to look at, but this is a Space Marine craft, its the people that have metal boxes as transports, its just how they roll.
As Shaun Gateley of Blue Table Painting said “What WOULD look good? because nerds will complain that it isn’t consistant with the fluff”
So its basically if it is a Space Marine vehicle it has to be bulky and boxy.
So you got over-excited and made a white spot on it? Ok… 🙂
I think it looks pretty decent, from above… looks stupid (in my opinion) with the landing gear down thou. Also the turret kinda ruins it, it looks way out of place.
I’m still not sold on the aesthetics but I kinda like it because its fugly. This could be a great model for a terrain piece(wide area terrain obviously…) or an objective which is pretty much the only use I have for it until they give it to everyone(could be summer of fliers, could be 6th edition) – after playing Ultramarines for about 15 years I’m not switching colours now for a flying rhino…
I hope you’re wrong. If the day comes that ALL marines get Stormravens I’ll quit and move on to another game (WM/Hordes probably). The way I see it they made it BA/GK only because they need to differentiate(?) the different SM chapters, or just make one book. I’m sick of Marine players complaining that they don’t get all the stuff other chapters get, then the non-Marine players complain that they’re all too similar to have separate codex’s. You can’t have it both ways. Just suck it up and play what you like. I don’t hear BA players complaining that BA… Read more »
I kinda wish it was likely the thunderbudgie would stay with BA/GK, but I can’t honestly see GW limiting a whole new 40 quid kit to a relatively small section of marines when they can put the rules in White Dwarf whenever they like and see an immediate improvement in sales of the thing. However the biggest thing that points towards all marines getting it eventually is that its not a blood angles vehicle in the fluff. I agree whole heartedly that GW should justify having five books that use the same basic units when the other races get one… Read more »
Well it is just a flying brick and I have seen better designes than this one, but I kinda started to like it.
Also it is not bad ruleswise, but I wouldnt use the hurricane bolters. Basically on turn 1, i will stand as far as possible from enemy shooting and fire all four bloodstrke missiles at preferred target. From that point on I would just move flat out as long as I can and use PotMS to shoot one weapon – either the multi melta for hard targets or assault cannon for softer ones.
Don’t forget it is fast, and at 12″ it can fire all defensive weapons. That means the hurricane bolters, frag missiles, plus turret weapon if you load it with typhoon missiles. My Raven has the plasma cannons on turret and typhoon / hurricane. That is a lot of anti-infantry fire at 12″ move distance.
by loading it with typhoon missiles, I meant the nose mount so you have the frag missiles, not the turret mount.
But moving flatout means 4+ cover making it twice as hard to kill – that for me is more important than getting 6 (or 12) more S4 AP5 shots
Good build Darrel,
Looks a bit better your way, this model is so ugly tho.
thanks BoW.
I must say, the stormraven is the first Marine model I don’t like. The Kit : 1. I’d like to have seen a transfer sheet that was 100% BA icons, or 50/50 BA & GK icons. Using the standard Marine vehicle sheet was just cheap. 2. For a model that will be used by both the BA & GK, I’m surprised there isn’t more GK icons/badges/etc. Hopefully there will be nice ones released in April. 3.The overall look of the stormraven is disappointing. For a chapter who loves being artistic and getting into combat quickly, I expected the model to… Read more »
horrible looking model
The tail is on backward and so are the rear landing gear. I know a lot of people don’t like this model, but I think it’s sweet in an ugly bad ass sort of way.
Lastly, I would definitely put Death Company with a Death Company Dreadnaught in one of these. Why wouldn’t you?
“BOY’O”
What like 16-39 times, “Here’s our BOY’O” “If I could get that BOY’O” “With this BOY’O”
And Bagels, You mean vehicle but it sounds like bagel.
Oh Darrell, you and you’re funny little words.
I love when he says bagels.. lol But my favorite is “Fail new peein’ ” or what we in the states would call Feel No Pain.
Well Darrel says it would have been much smoother and not that sharp .. But i think it does look good i mean isnt that what a SPACE MARINE vehicle should look like i mean look at the rhinos theyre almost square shaped.. If they would made him like much smoother it wouldnt look like a space marine vehicle it would more look like an eldar aircraft. And its fantasy… so it doesnt have to look all realistic. Sorry if i made some grammatical errors iam from holland so….
i dont think it looks as bad as people made it out to look
fail on darrell’s part of gluein down the cockpit before paintin inside
also the turret weapons do they need to be glued on or can i mak them interchangable to suit my enemy are so like 1 game twin linked assult cannon TL lasies the next
FW Stormeagle much better looking than this mainly due to the extra length putting everything into proportion which it isn’t here (stop sniggering at the back).
Twin-linked Vengence Launcher anyone?
🙂
@panzergrenadier101 Sounds like you need to get into the world of magnetising.
Wow, did not realise how old this thread was when I posted.
Ha me too. Still, there is a neat upgrade kit out for it now. http://chapterhousestudios.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=200
Nice.
But not as nice as my Stormeagle 😉
But what to do with all the leftover ‘raven bits tho?
Can’t see their being many from the hull? Still it is an improvement over the old Epic Mk1 thunderhawk (brick 🙂 ), but only just! It really does strike you as a compromise to making a plastic thunderhawk, which is nuts as it would surely sell as well as the baneblade.
